In an ever-changing world of advancements in the field of pancreatic cancer research we rely on our experts to keep us informed of breakthroughs and new medical guidelines. In 2017, Dr. Gigris provided an update on Advances in Pancreatic Cancer Surgery at our annual Symposium. Now, three years later, he will present on “Pancreatic Cancer: Advances in Research and Patient Care” as part of our ongoing webinar series.
Mark Girgis, MD, is an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. He is a skilled robotic surgeon and committed to the improvement of cancer care through innovative technological advancements as well as ground breaking research. Someone very close to my heart has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer a couple of weeks ago, he's only 25 and I'm trying to learn everything I can about this horrible disease. Living in South Africa and him attending government medical facilities doesn't make things easy because I simply don't trust their abilities in treating it. To make matters worse he is having an allergic reaction to some of the pills they've given him.

There has been some success with something called turkey tail mushroom. I was just diagnosed with pancreatic cancer about 10 days ago and it showed up in my lungs. I've started to take it but instead of 1 in the morning at 1 in the evening or twice a day I've taken two at a time. I think it may be helping my digestion trouble. I've lost over 25 lb since March and it's now September none of the doctors could figure out the horrible pain and dummy me felt like the pain was coming from my uterus and the spotting I was having. I'm 72 and God bless your friend but he's young and should be able to fight this. Do everything you can to get his immune system at its peak. The doctors told me many people who get cancer have low vitamin D levels. He should have his tested Optimum should be between 60 and 80. Mine is 50 I take Vitamin D supplements and it's winter in your part of the world. And it's really tough to get enough vitamin D for anyone in the winter. Try to get him to eat well and take vitamin C, B complex, vitamin D, zinc, and selenium is a mineral many soils are depleted in so it's important to take that as a supplement and it's also great for fighting viruses. I don't have any other health problems I don't have high blood pressure I don't have diabetes I don't have heart problems I've been a very healthy hardworking person on my life but the past six months or so I just haven't felt right no energy and I'm sure your friend is gone through that! How are you doing? I hope you're doing well I was just diagnosed with pancreatic cancer that has move to my lungs. I had just had a d and c that found endometrial cancer in the uterus. I was supposed to have it removed through robotic surgery at Mercy Hospital in Baltimore but that's on hold till they figure out what they're going to do with the pancreatic cancer which is also on the head. I am staying very positive about the whole thing even though I know this is really serious stuff. So I hope you're doing well and it would be nice to hear from you.

If a patient does not agree to chemo is there another method or treatment like MR that targets the area of the site of the pancreas where only the area that is getting the radiation it does not the other organs of the body. Is UCLA equipped with that equipment to treat patients that opt out of chemo. What is the outcome of patients regarding life span without chemo? On a personal level of losing a loved one to pancreatic cancer and I myself dealing with several cyst and one that has significantly became larger. I’m not considering chemo if the diagnosis of cancer.

I was just diagnosed 10 days ago with pancreatic cancer that's moved to the lungs along with a different kind of cancer in my uterus. I'm 72 and I meet with a cancer doctor on Monday. In the meantime I'm continuing to take the vitamins I was taking to keep my immune system healthy because of the virus that goes around that is so horrible. One of the cancer doctors I met in the hospital said many people who develop cancer have low vitamin D levels an Optimum is between 60 and 80 mine is 50. It's very hard anymore for people to get enough vitamin D which is a hormone and is really important to our immune system. My brother discovered and has been taking for a month or so something called turkey tail mushroom supplement. He ordered some for me and I started taking it on Monday. I was diagnosed with Stage II B adenocarcinoma in the tail of the pancreas. I had surgery to remove the cancer and my spleen. Now doing chemo for 6 month. Fulfirinox and 5-FU.. I am HOPING no I will be cured. Around 13 minutes talking about the microbiol how do I increase that to help keep the cancer away? Is there anything I can do?

Progress in the outcome of treatment of panc cancer is slow but sure. However it’s far from what we see in other cancers such as breast or colorectal cancers. Surgery has reached the pinnacle of expectations with wider resection, vascular & visceral resection resulting in reduction in local failure. However progress in systemic therapy is at best modest and distant failures are common and responsible dismal prognosis (death of the patients) hence remains the subject of ongoing investigations.
