@Jay Pandas are never really 'wild' animals. They should have been wiped out in the wilds left alone. Pandas are plain stupid and doesn't have the ability to live out in the wild, so captive is better. They were always dependent.
@OK-hi5ym4 жыл бұрын
I replied this on another comment that was saying it was mean to keep her in a cage like this but this just the indoor part of her enclosure, there is also an outdoor part that she can access at any time. In the wild when pandas are about to give birth they will find a cave to nest down in to have their child and for a few weeks after birth, she’s choosing to stay in there because that’s what feels safe and natural for her. Also in most zoos the outdoor part is the area open for public viewing so going inside means she’s gets quiet and privacy to care for her new babies. When pandas are born they are blind and extremely helpless, it would dangerous at this stage to have rocks, leaves etc in her space. It’s also easier to keep sterile and clean as the newborns are also very susceptible to illness for the first few weeks. They spend most of their time tucked in their mother’s armpit where her nipples are, breastfeeding.

@Guru Amirite it might just be that those people don't have enough funds or land to build a comfortable place for pandas. Although that's unlikely, there's no doubt that Chinese people love their work and love pandas. Pandas are one of the national symbols of China, and many do their best to take care of them, even if the pandas are behind bars. Also note that this is only one mother panda. Maybe this is the easiest place to tend to pandas with cubs, and afterwards they'll be moved back to better enclosures, with their friends. But who knows.

I think the mother trusts the keeper implicitly to not harm her cub. Pandas are hard wired by nature to prevent the cub being separated from the body heat of it's mother for the first month or six weeks because of the risk of hypothermia. Even the keepers wrap it in a warming cloth when transferring the cub to the incubator to avoid a drop in body temperature.

@bull Zhou they're not born prematurely. They're just born small because it's easier for their bodies to convert the little nutrition that bamboo (the staple of a pandas diet) provides into milk rather than to convert it into animal tissue so their cubs are born small so they can get the rest of their nutritional value through moms milk. It's a breeding strategy that comes with trade offs, unfortunately.

No kidding. Pandas are the klutziest and beautifully dumbest bears in existence. They can barely figure out how to breed in the first place half the time. My cousin is a bear specialist and was very fortunate to work with pandas on loan to the zoo he works at from the Chinese government a few years ago in his town. Part of the loan package was attempting to pair a male and female together for breeding during the two or three days the female was receptive. He said that it took two full days of very awkward trying before the male even succeeded in actually mating with her, never mind successfully impregnated her. Turns out it was unsuccessful, sadly. But he told us it looked like two teenagers with zero sex Ed trying to figure out how to dry hump in the back of a station wagon. And the hilariously sad thing is that both of these pandas had successfully bred in the past. 😂 So it's not like they shouldn't have known what they were supposed to do. They're just that bad at it.

@Clambert Jamdrip I’m not answering a question designed to gaslight me, honey. If you’re that sick of it then go live in a cave somewhere. As for those animals that went extinct, they did so in a time when we didn’t know better as a species. You’re blaming the people of today for mistakes made when they weren’t even born yet. “Your great great great granddad raped my great great great grandma, poisoned our well and butchered our cow. I demand you feel guilty about it and pay me one hundred dollars!” Sounds kinda silly when you put like that, huh? That’s basically what you’re doing. Modern people are becoming more aware that change needs to happen and conservation is stronger now than it’s ever been. If we weren’t doing better, you wouldn’t know what wolves or whales looked like. You can either accept that we’re trying to change and support your own kind in its efforts, or you can pop a squat there on the road and scream while you get left behind. Your choice.

You didn't listen! The commentator said that the Panda allowing the carer to take the cub requires a great level of trust between the Panda and the carer. She didn't 'trade' her cub for honey water, she knows she'll get her cub back, as she does each time! She just doesn't like having to part with the cub even for a little while, and quite understandably, given that cub is her only comfort. I do think that small empty bare cage she's in is awful though, I hope that's just temporary for the purpose of getting both of the cubs fed by the panda! 🙏🏻

Fun fact from COSI: When panda keepers first tried this, they noticed the mother licked her favored cub while it was nursing. When replicating this during artificial feeding by rubbing it's belly, the zookeepers noticed it enabled panda cubs to poo. That alone boosted the survival rate of pandas far higher than previous attempts of caring for twins.
@Kingoftheworld5002 жыл бұрын
Apparently panda cubs can't poop on their own. They need help and once zookeepers learned this the cub survival rate went way up.

Mother dogs and cats do this as well; licking the babys' bellies and genital areas to stimulate urination and bowel movements.
@sws.custom.designs2 жыл бұрын
Most nursing animals do that. When my mom would care for the baby animals at her job she would have to rub them with a warm washcloth (baby big cats mostly)
@h.s.62692 жыл бұрын
I'm kinda surprised they didn't attempt that earlier since many other mammals do that. When I was younger I lost a kitten a mom abandoned due to the fact I didn't know this was a thing...
@ariannasantina2 жыл бұрын
yes... this is pretty common knowledge and the keepers really should have thought of this on its own though. most baby mammals need help peeing and pooing ... their mother licks them to 'stimulate' them to go to the bathroom. I had to do this when i raised rescued baby mice, i rub their bottoms with a warm tissue after they eat to get them to poo. anyone who raises like foster kittens that dont have a mommy probably know to do the same thing. its surprising a zookeeper wouldnt have thought of that on their own. pretty much all baby mammals need that done for their first few weeks of life up until about the time their eyes open and sometimes still a little longer than that depending on their development individually. Yes, it also occurred to me that surely the mother must be able to distinguish their different scents? Stop idealizing human emotions into animals. Animals don't feel "love" like we do. The mother literally traded the cub for water and they abandon a secondary newborn in a heartbeat. It's all about survival and instincts. It is adorable yes. And they do care about their newborns. But it's a different feeling than that of humans
@horsegirlde6 жыл бұрын
twigstr99 The video stated that it takes trust with the zookeeper to swap out the babies if it was anyone else she wouldn't have given the baby up. They may not love in the same way we do but they care and mourn look at whales. A good example of this is the Orca mother who carried her dead calf for 17 days. Love is also subjective, the definition differs by person and situation so whos to say its not love in their own form.
