Pandeiro Lesson 1 with Dudu Tucci

I've seen a video with some of the very best "tambourine-like" players (pandeiro, riq, kanjira, tambourine, etc.) interacting and playing extremely complex rhythms simultaneously and in response to each other. Who was the KING of tambourine-like instruments? It was the Panderio. There are so many sounds and techniques available through this instrument. You have the six basic ways of striking the head and the two way of changing the pitch or muting - from above and from below. You also have a very popular technique that he didn't show where you rub your finger across the head and cause the jingles to sound. When you combine all of those, it gives you so many notes you can play. The technique of moving the pandeiro instead of the striking hand allows you to play insanely fast complex rhythms. The low tuning of the head allows the pandeiro to legitimately play bass percussion parts as well. Other tambourine family instruments don't have a deep low tone. It's also interesting that a lot of professional pandeiro players actually prefer synthetic heads because of their volume, responsiveness, and snappiness.

I love the pandeiro. I play with a community based Samba band, but no one else is really interested in play pandeiro. If you play congas, the hand movements come easily for pandeiro. Same with the Rebolo as well. Anyway great lesson. Glad I am a Patreon supporter and will get more of this over there!
