5 pistons moving at max speed is 50m/s, hitting the stop piston at the same time... Frankly I'm surprised you didn't do more damage.

It's a no-no on Keen official servers, but you can just put a timer trying to lock the connector every 10 seconds on the NPC station and it will reconnect after timeout.
