Ya know what? The opening to the first game is actually pretty amazing considering how early it was. Plus, it had me laughing at the pretty good comedic timing.

TheOtioseFanatic The second game was really what crashed the game series. It had worse graphics than the first, and felt a little rushed for me. Now, the first game, it might've not been very popular, but had a good (and short) run.

Something companies didn't understand back in the day, and some still don't now is that some types of game just flow better in 2D or 2.5D. The 3D hype resulted in a lot of inferior games because the technology wasn't quite there yet or the mechanics of established series didn't translate well from 2D to 3D.

Love your videos, bro. I think it's fantastic that a lot of the time you give lesser known games a smidge of time in the spotlight. It's clear you put a lot of time and effort into what you do, the videos speak for themselves. You're not content to just regurgitate what other KZbinrs have done to death to get views and subscribers and I respect you mightily for that. Your channel is way unique. Good on you, bro.

This has always been one of my favourites since I was a kid. I recently picked up a copy of Whiplash on PS2 and noticed quite a few similarities with the music, humour and just bizarre level designs. Turns out it’s also Crystal Dynamics and I think might even have the same people in the audio department. The sliding and squelching sfxs are almost identical. And the boss levels are very very similar to Pandemonium!

It always saddened me both now and at the time that we didn't receive more 2D games on the Playstation and N64. I remember when Rayman was released, it was such a breath of fresh air at the time. With 2.5D I was always a Klonoa man, but this video has inspired me to pick the Pandemonium games up. Ah well at least it was better than the next generation, in the Xbox/PS2/Gamecube era 2D platformers were all but non existant and even 3D ones were scarce. The beginning of the gritty grey era, that has made gaming less inspiring to this day :(
@slopesgameroom
@slopesgameroom 7 жыл бұрын
I dunno, i think since the end of the last generation, 2D (or 2.5D) games have boomed in popularity with titles like Shank, Mark Of the Ninja, New Super Mario Bros, Donkey Kong, Ori and the Blind Forest, Limbo, Inside, Unravel, Super Meat Boy, Braid, Boy and His Blob, Wario Land Shake Dimensions, Kirby Triple Deluxe/Epic Yarn, Batman Brave and the Bold, Rayman Legends & Muramasa: The Demon Blade to name a few :D I genuinely think we are one of the greatest generations of game releases because smaller game companies can not afford to make massive games and thankfully are forced to become creative like they was 2-3 generations ago all over again :D But then again 99% of these great games never get a physical release and are looked at as "budget titles" therefor get forgotten about by the masses :(
@TopHatGamingManChannel
@TopHatGamingManChannel 7 жыл бұрын
True what I meant really was its the gritty grey games that the mass market appear to be most interested in these days, so that is where the most money is pumped. I still stand by my point though about the PS2 era seeming to practically not have platformers.
@slopesgameroom
@slopesgameroom 7 жыл бұрын
Top Hat Gaming Man Yep I agree with that, i think that's why such an old genre feels so fresh nowadays. For instance I just bought another PS4 with 17 Games for a very cheap price which i plan to swap for decent games that I actually like. I best get in there quick tho as you can prob guess what almost all the games are (Fifa, Cod, battlefront etc) Generic rubbish that only gets picked up because GAME put them on the shelves. Sadly this is the mindset of the world we live in. However thankfully great games are starting to see a resurgence even if only in the digital medium 99% of the time

The sixth generation has boatloads of platformer games on Sega Dreamcast, Sony PlayStation, Nintendo GameCube and even the Microsoft Xbox, Top Hat Gaming Man. You got 3D Sonic games (such as Sonic Adventure games), Ratchet & Clank, Jak & Daxter, Sly Cooper, Super Mario Sunshine, Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, Dr. Muto, Blinx, Klonoa, Voodoo Vince, Spyro, Crash Bandicoot, Super Magnetic Neo, the 3D Rayman games, Pac-Man World games, Metroid Prime games, and etc. There are literally loads of platformers for the sixth generation, many of which were best-sellers on their respective consoles.

Didn't know Pandemonium was made by Ford & Reiche! I've tried the game before and it felt fun enough, but learning it was made by the same guys as Star Control II made me really want to play it. :D SCII stands almost in a league of it's own with it's charm and personality. I absolutely loved this game and it's soundtrack. For those of you who feel the same, go listen to the PC version's soundtrack !! It's the full soundtrack but uncompressed with very high quality audio and some instruments slightly changed and even some added instruments. It's definitely worth listening to ! And for those curious how this game could look today, there's an artist on Artstation that made some concepts and 3D models for what a remake could look like today. Really interesting stuff !

Disappointing what they did to the characters in part 2, it was unnecessary. I was 20 when this game came out and still loved it. It felt like retro games of my youth which are hard to find now. Unless you're really a stickler for physical media (which I kind of can be) I think the best place to get these games is on GOG, since the PC versions of both games are on there for pretty cheap. Which I imagine look better than the PS1 version too, if nothing else, for more colors and higher resolution.

I was introduced to Pandemonium through a demo of the PC version. Great stuff! Who cares if the game is old, it's still fun to play. And so what if the cutscenes look like ReBoot, that's a good thing because unlike Toy Story ReBoot has charm. And yes Pandemonium is a less frustrating game that Bubsy knock-off Crash Bandicoot.

Part of me misses the vague backstory of old 90s opening cutscenes. Just a simple bare minimum to get ya invested into the characters.
