Moving stories of separated families and GDR citizens wanting to flee to the West during the time of German division have become known to a wider public. Many East Germans had to pay with their lives for their escape attempts. However, little is known about the role of Swedish citizens like Carl-Gustaf Svingel, a mediator between the Federal Republic’s and the East German leadership, who over decades helped thousands of GDR citizens to freedom.
With recent book publications as a starting point, we shed light on the contribution of courageous Swedes as escape helpers. We also learned about the central role played by the Permanent Mission of the Federal Republic of Germany in East Berlin in humanitarian issues during the division of Germany.
On the panel:
Dr. Jacqueline Boysen, historian and author of "Das 'weiße Haus' in Ost-Berlin. Die ständige Vertretung der Bundesrepublik bei der DDR"
Ingrid Thörnqvist, journalist and author of "Carl-Gustaf Svingel och Silvias familj i det kalla krigets Berlin"
Host of the event is Ambassador Christina Beinhoff, daughter to an East German refugee who fled to West Germany thanks to the Swedish escape helper.
Contemporary witnesses, researchers, and journalists participated in the discussion.
