How should the international community respond to the rising risks of a nuclear war and WMD terrorism? This session will explore the mounting threats of a nuclear war and terrorist attacks involving chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear weapons. What must be done to enhance the mechanisms and institutions necessary to prevent disastrous consequences, intentional or not? And what should the roles of the United States and China be in such an endeavor?
Ban Ki-moon, 8th Secretary General of the United Nations; Chair, Ban Ki-moon Foundation for a Better Future
Ambassador Angelina Eichhorst, Managing Director, European External Action Service
Jeffrey Sachs, Director, Center for Sustainable Development, Columbia University
Moderated by Steven Erlanger, Chief Diplomatic Correspondent, Europe, The New York Times

Jeff is the professor who actually understands history, being honest and give wise advice. Politicians in the world should listen more to these wise people. It is so scary that Ban was served as the secretary -general of the United Nations. Now I understand why the world mess could get to this level. We should really carefully select country leaders and currently we have so many awful ones.

Due to the Eisenhower Doctrine: it started when UK ( PM Anthony Eden) ; France and Israel invaded Egypt without the knowledge of US in 1954. But Eisenhower blocked the IMF loan to UK ( suffering from the depreciation of the pound and loss of reserves). So UK had to withdraw its troops; and so did France. Both countries humiliated: CDGaulle built France's nuclear capability ; then withdrew from NATO ; de Gaulle was also the first country to call in the dollars for gold under the Bretton Woods in 1957 which eventually led to the demise of the gold-exchange standard.

The lady is talking rubbish. 1. Europe can never be energy independent simply because there isn't or enough oil and gas for their version of Europe. If EU really wants that they should have let or even invited Russia to join EU. Then EU can says that they have their "own" source of energy. 2. GET RID OF NATO. The conflicts there are ALL Nato instigated and initiated. 3. Get some balls and spine transplanted and crawl away from UAss. 4 . recognize that the world is NOT western European or anglo saxon

The level of NATO and US nuclear readiness came to a head when the 'headless chooks' in Ukraine fired a missile that landed in Poland. Reckless Zelensky tried hard to involve US and NATO to start a nuclear war. What was not surprising was to see NATO and US literally wetting their pants to show that the missile was not from Russia, because it would have exposed them to the world as real 'paper tigers' - unable to launch a nuclear attack knowing very well what will happen to Europe in such a situation. People in Europe enjoy a very high standard of living and it will be downright foolish to compromise their lives in a war US is trying to fight against Russia to the last Ukranian! Europe includes Russia. They should unite against the Aliens from the Western Hemisphere! This is why President Putin has always been talking about a new European Security Framework replacing the almost defunct NATO - a mechanism which is just a mechanism which keeps the bureaucrats such as Jens Stoltenburg and others of their ilk in office and the American - Military Industrial - Congressional Complex alive!

Korea War, Cuba Crisis, Vietnam War and even nowadays Ukraine War are all the fightings for the “comfort zone” outside the country’s borders. In order to make such “comfort zone”, 1950 Chinese army stepped into the Korea War, 1962 America warned Soviet Union because of Cuba missile issue and 1970s Chinese army secretly joined in the Vietnam War and expelled strong American army away from Vietnam. 1. Before Korea War, no one from the west ever thought the poor “dictatorship” Chinese army with their stone-aged equipments could really dare to step into the Korea War and push armed to teeth American army from Chinese border back to Korean 38 degrees north latitude line, above which has been keeping as Chinese “comfort zone”, nowadays North Korea. 2. No surprise when Kennedy announced the ultimatum of nuclear attack to Cuba and Soviet Union in 1962 because America didn’t allow any foreigner to militarize its “comfort zone”, Cuba. 3. Even now very few could really understand from the beginning of the Vietnam War why did advanced USA army dare not to across the 17 degrees north latitude after Chinese seriously warning, above which was also Chinese “comfort zone”, North Vietnam. And American army never ever went further north into this Chinese “comfort zone”. Instead, they just stayed behind there until 1975 they lost the Vietnam War. In conclusion, same as Korea War, Cuba Crisis, Vietnam War and nowadays Ukraine War against the provocation of NATO expansions, all are the same kind of game. Geopolitically and historically, every big country pursues its own “comfort zone” or buffer zone outside its borders! Russia is not exceptional.

22:44, Sachs does not understand why Kennedy could not broadcast the nature of his agreement with Khrushchev 1963-1964? The deal was based on a trade, remove US Jupiter missiles in Turkey for Soviet missiles from Cuba. This could not be made public because; 1. Made US commitment to other areas of the world appear weak, like Europe and obviously Turkey. 2. A quid pro quo agreement would not have left Kennedy or Kennedy's party looking very resilient if nuclear activity did transpire. 3. Its unlikely Kennedy's close advisors would have blessed the real agreement. Also, the integrity of his deal would have been at risk. I admire Kennedy greatly. I tend to believe that he played chess on a several levels during this extremely turbulent time while still executing real, inclusive leadership. Often forgotten, the US and Soviet Russia have never officially been to war. And Kennedy played a key role in this! While Jeffery Sachs longs for more transparent foreign policy and wished Kennedy's negotiation was an object lesson for the average American; overlooked, the Korean war had already come and gone by 1964 and the Vietnam conflict was almost 10 years old. Unlikely to have changed much sentiment even if the noble lie had not been told by the great, John F. Kennedy.
