Personally I think, like the players, in international football you should only be allowed to appoint a manager from your country. Not just England but all teams. Tuchel was signed BEFORE the Greece game. That's why Carsley was a bit ambiguous at the press conferences, as he knew. Getting TT (& so cheap) is a coup. The guy is a real anglophile ... wants to live in England. What pisses me off about the English media and its understanding of the English game is they don’t realize there might be plenty of individual quality but none of it works well together. There hasn’t been an authentic English football philosophy since the days of route one football with instructions of “just kick it to the target man.” Everything good about the English league has come from foreign players and coaches. The variety in tactics and the focus on technical player development all came from Italians, Germans, Brazilians and Spaniards coming into the league. Wenger revolutionized player nutrition and introduced the first version of possession football into the English game. The average English coach can’t stand next to the average Spanish coach and certainly not next to the new crop of German coaches so I don’t understand where this idea that there’s a qualified English coach out there that can manage the national team and stand toe to toe with head coaches from other top national teams comes from.

Never seen this show before but more common sense spoken here than on Lineker's show or Neville's. As a Utd fan, not overly surprised Ineos messed up _again_ , missing out on Tuchel. Ineos seem adept at firing tea ladies but are weak and timid when it comes to the big calls. Something's going wrong with their structure, probably too many cooks.

Ironically it was the FA that drove these managers away with constant harassment from press. The FA did not give Brian Clough or Bob Paisley a serious thought in the late 70s and early 80s. England did not qualify for the World Cups in 74 and 78 and still they did not give the job to either one of the two best managers in Europe at that time.

The UK media and ex-players will always treat British managers differently to foreign ones. If British managers are underperforming, they'll be far less critical and far more patient than if it was a foreign manager. Look at the excuses they made for Southgate time and time again. No way will they be as patient with Tuchel despite him having a record to justify patience. You can prefer an English manager but the backlash from some is ridiculous - Tuchel is an elite manager, not some nobody and surely people want to win

The point is it is nation against nation. You can't buy in foreign footballers to play for your country, you have to make best of what you have. In this way, to me, it makes it more interesting, and in some ways ir rejects the money side of club football, ie, players just thinking about the paycheck. So, for some, buying in/importing a foreign manager undermines this. Kinda like cheating.

I dont think Gary Neville or Jamie Carragher are upset about the Thomas Tuchel appointment. I think they voiced their concerns that there are very few if any great English managers in the game now. And to a certain degree they are right. In Spain, they are producing great managers/coaches. Italy even in this barren period is still producing great managers, Germany has produced top managers over the last 10 years. Even the Dutch, who have no stability in their coaching ranks whatsoever, has produced good managers. Portgual is experimenting with a foreign manager as Roberto Martinez is Spanish but I dont think that will last long. Brazil tried with Carlo Ancelotti but then Ancelotti U-turned. And when England did have great managers in Brian Clough and Bob Paisley, none of them were given serious consideration by the FA. They appointed Ron Greenwood over Brian Clough before the 1982 World Cup because Clough was "too outspoken" and Paisely was given no consideration by the FA. Sir Bobby Robson and Terry Venables were attacked by the press constantly which drove them away even though both were responsible for England's best performances in major tournaments for years, reaching semifinals of World Cup 1990 and Euro 96 respectively. I have no sympathy for the FA because they drove most of the English managers away by their nepotism and very negative treatment. So Gary and Jamie is right to voice their concerns.
