As filmmakers that live in Durban, we documented the collapse of our home town. In a three part mini episode titled - Durban Is Collapsing.
Filmed from 17th November - 2nd December 2022.
In collaboration with The Litterboom Project.
This is the full version.
As the province slides into a state of disrepair,
with thousands of litres of raw sewage running into our oceans and rivers, making our people sick. The state of our beaches filthy and litter strewn.
The municipality’s and governance of KZN have failed us.
With special thanks to all the contributors and people, who continue to expose the truth and fight for the preservation and believe in the potential of #OurDurban

Great effort, team!! We live in a little Midlands town in KZN, and we're currently fighting against the apathy of indifference and corruption. The surprising thing is since the roits of 2021, we've become far closer knit community (read into that a none BEE compliant community). Today, our little village is united across race barriers and is far more confident to take on the various guieses of our failed government. We're winning small, almost insignificant victories every month (wish it was every week), but we're making an impact. My point is you guys are legends don't give up the good fight.

@martinmgaga5035

Do they have a clue what is MAINTENANCE, the current " rookie" political leaders have no clue, concept about Municipal Politics & Administration. These politicians/administrators of today all what they know is to occupy public office and generate money for themselves and friends. Millions or Billions of public money is not for service delivery, but is for their friends to become rich/millionaires, smoke cigars, expensive trips to overseas. Go out there and audit all municipal projects, completed/not completed, you'll shocked about what they have charged. A project of R200 million will be completed with R50 million, R150 MILLION squandered/looted. There is disaster funds in government, even foreign countries are contributing to it. Durban qualified to that fund. But how much was collected/allocated. Durban beeches are not closed for CONSTRUCTION. They are closed because it is not environmental safe to be there. Durban Municipality Politicians/Project managers are nowhere to be found, they're THUMB SUCKING. Cape Town municipality has a vision. What's Durban future development, 5yrs, 10yrs vision?. NONE. Municipal managers, Financial managers, Planners etc. are dreaming about how they can register contractors to provide scam services to Durban Municipality, POLITICAL/ FINANCIAL HYENAS ON THE LOOSE

Absolutely, dry up the supply, but I can't see that happening. People stand together when there is fear being promulgated (lockdown as a case study). People in general will not stop paying taxes because they fear the repercussions more than the decay. It's an individual act which requires a leader before it can become viable. Withholding taxes is frowned upon by good meaning people even if the beneficiaries are corrupt.

I wouldn’t vote 🗳️ for any other party especially DA because white people in south South Africa 🇿🇦 don’t want to work together with black South Africans. Apartheid has divided us as South Africans and still during Nelson Mandela administration whites never listened to Mandela for us to come together. Municipality will not perform as long as blacks and whites are not working together.

A well produced documentary. Thanks for creating content that we the people of South Africa need to be seeing. One can only start trying to make a difference when one's eyes has been opened and this film sure has opened mine. Durban can for sure be saved. If not by its goverment, then by its people.

It's the sadness in everyone's faces and voices for me 😔. I personally haven't been to Durban in 4 years but from the videos and pictures I've been seeing, I'm utterly disgusted. Sies Ethekwini municipality!!! 🤢you had one job, one easy job, to keep an already beautiful city beautiful, that's it. Durban doesn't need much by it's nature. A lot of work needs to be done and those corrupt scumbags need to be voted out!

I am shocked & frankly horrified at what has become of the city I called home for 14 years or so. I now live in the UK, but I tell people here how beautiful Durban is (or was) & how much I miss it. My children were born here & would love to visit but we are told by friends that the city isn’t safe enough to come out for a holiday. My parents brought me here in 1976 & are now buried here. The memories of this beautiful city are fortunately safely in my head. God bless all Durbanites I hope that one day the city Fathers mange to turn this place around & make it a great place to live once again. God bless Durban.

It is really sad, being an ex-Durbanite seeing what has happened to a city where I as a young man who used to enjoy, freedom, and entertainment during the early seventies. Then there was order and respect for the environment and surroundings. Durban was Durban, unfortunately, the country has fallen into wasted rule, mismanagement and the excuses that are tabled are just appalling. You cannot get weaker than this. It stinks.

Look at Africa show me one black leader in Africa that can actually run a country successfully , none. Every black leader is corrupt and is easily bought over. Qadaffi was the only black successful leader mined you he was an Arab. He never begged or took anything from the west he refused to be bought over.

Durban is fast becoming dilapidated...it's not just the beaches. The state of our CBD, roads and residential areas is shocking. Regular monitoring and maintenance will prevent many of our present challenges, however, nobody in the positions of authority seem to be invested in it's upkeep and people in positions of authority are not held accountable. We have some of the best beaches in our beautiful country. If we, the people, join forces to fix the problem (and I believe we will step up and deliver) we will be enabling the present malpractices to continue. It's sad that future generations may not be able to enjoy the beauty of our country unless the people in positions of authority care deeply enough to just do what is required of them. Nothing more, nothing less. It does not have to be this way. It can be turned around!

Those responsible (and being paid) for looking after the infrastructure and process should be held accountable - and then qualified people who truly care, installed to fix this dire situation.

ANC! Since ANC lost Umhlathuze LM/Richards Bay, we can see improvement a bit by bit. Bay Hall and Pool in MeerEnSee have totally become disfunctional. Durban is a mess, ANC doesn't even see or acknowledge the mess they are causing. At the beach, why do they close the public toilets at 5:30pm while there are thousand of people/visitors still enjoying the shore? The public toilet should not be closed especially during the feastive or close around 11pm. People end up using the bush at the beach to release themselves.

Why did we in the first place decide to dump our toxic waste in a medium, out of our sight, but endangering the very environment of sealife, which we also harvest to further stuff our pie holes? However, unfortunately, I don't think there can be a long term fix until - as one of the interviewees here said - "the people at the top must stop eating money". Time to hold those people at the top accountable in public. Shame them, hold their feet to the fire, take them to court, whatever it takes!

Those old gentleman that build that proud city should no longer be associated with it as it is now. I can suggest a few more appropriate street names more suitable to the Durban I saw recently. Sewerage Street, Pee-inn Lane, Rat Road, Hookers Highway, Prostitute Place, Feces Freeway, Cockroach Close, Beggars Boulevard, Stink Street, E-coli Avenue, Shit Street, Filth Freeway, Hobo Highway, Condom Close, Prostitute Parade, Drunkerts Drive, Whore's Highway, Urine odour street and many more.
