On buffer jumps: How buffer jumps are programmed is, that the game registers a jump input before you hit the ground, and uses this input to make you jump when landing, so it avoids frustrating players that press the jump button one frame before hitting the ground, resulting in them not jumping and dying to a pit or something. So for the buffer jumps in mario, you actually have to press the jump button slightly BEFORE hitting the ground, not afterwards. if you hit it afterwards, it's always to high. thats why you only can chain up buffer jumps after a regular jump (no bufferjumping from standing/running)

A regular jump is always 2 blocks tall minimum. That would send him into the spikes. The buffered jump is less than 2 blocks tall so you wouldn't hit the spikes.
