The Cariboo region of BC, is well known for very rich ground, and is even home to multiple gold rushes. British Columbia, in general, has a lot of locations with a history of mass fortunes in gold taken from veins in the mountains, and concentrations in the rivers. The Fraser river, spanning 1300 km from the rockies to the Pacific Ocean, carries water from many of these rivers, and with it - Gold! You can successfully pan for gold almost anywhere along the Fraser River, but only few places will yield anything larger than gold dust. Large rivers, like the Quesnel River, will deposit large pieces of gold, and nuggets can be found at these junctions, but quickly the gold is ground down as it tumbles down the mighty Fraser. I often read comments from folks that encourage me to pan at the rivers I pass, but it is pretty challenging to find enough gold to even match half of minimum wage. Never the less, the excitement and possibility are always present. Weather or not I found my fortune, the adventure will always continue, and the arrival of spring has come just in time. My love for adventure, and curiosity for history, started here in Williams Lake so it is always a pleasure to have the time to share the beauty of my home town with you all. Unfortunately, few people actually get out and enjoy this beautiful place, but I happen to enjoy these loops, and this local history, and I am proud to share it with an audience that feels the same.

It's an early 50's Nash. My Dad bought one in about 1961 and it was the rustiest car I'd ever seen. Smoked so bad you could'nt see anything behind the car. He paid $50 for it . Had a roof rack that held the 2 gallon jugs of motor oil required for infusion frequently. He drove it from NH all the way to Ft Lauderdale Fla and back. My Dad loved the car despite it's many problems...because it had air conditioning. Nothing else mattered as long as frosty air was blowing out of the dashboard. When he passed away a couple years ago, under a pile of junk in the back of the barn, we found the AC compressor from his old Nash. Just couldn't let it go.

Wow, Dustin...this has been an incredible vid...watching you pan gold brought back a memory of about 35 or so years ago. My G/F at the time and I were spending the spring and early summer travelling and exploring the lower part of Alberta, the east Kootenay area of southern B.C. and the Fraser Valley. She got tired of living in my old Camper, so we stopped for a while in Grand Forks, B.C. and rented a beat-up old house that was really close to the Kettle River (and the Pope & Talbot sawmill). We'd spend a lot of time just hanging out down at the end of the road at the beach on the river (kinda where the "new" bridge crosses the river now) and I was playing around with an old hubcap I'd found and some sand and saw some bright flashes. I knew that there were some working placer sites and a couple of mines farther up the river, so I started actually working a little more diligently (I had NO idea what I was actually doing...lol) and even went so far as to buy an old gold pan at a thrift barn in town. Between me, my G/F and just hanging at the beach, we ended up panning out about $1200 over a 2 1/2 month period... but then had to hang on to the little hoard we had until we got down to Hope, B.C. because we found out that it was considered "theft" according to a few of the towns people and a couple of guys who worked one of the placer mines up river. We had decided to leave town anyway and continue down to the coast and over to Vancouver Island (where I am from), so we just packed the truck up and headed out. I was gobsmacked when I actually found out how much dust and flake we'd managed to keep, and it ended up being enough to give us an extra month of gas and groceries. I've been back a couple of times over the years to that little town, but you can't even get down to the river in that area anymore ( it's all grown up around it)... but it holds a cool old memory in my now 65 year old mind. I have you to thank for kicking it to the front again, and watching and listening to you really made me smile...so thanks, and keep the great content coming, I'm really looking forward to this spring and summer travel season.... so , Peace out, from Doc, in the Great White (now all green, grey, muddy and damp) North of southern Ontario, Canada.🦫🐻🟥🍁🟥... oh ya, that old car looks like it could be either a Nash Ambassador, or maybe a Hudson (a Hornet?)... anyway, it's old and cool...stay safe and keep the rubber rollin'.

This episode hits close to home. My now 30+ year old twin boys and I carried pans and sniffer bottle every time we went camping when they were little. I never got into using a sluice or trammel, just panning and camp stories. It got to the point my guys were disappointed if I pulled into a lake side spot, they looked forward to the gold panning. And you are so right, the further up you go both in direction and elevation the better (larger) the gold. Anyway, Dustin, I just went out to the shed to see what was there. 11 Gerber/Heinz baby food jars, each somewhere around half to 3/4 full of placer gold. Dust and flakes, any nugs were given as gifts. That is over 25+ years of panning.

not sure if you might know where you filmed this video , but, when I was a young lad of 18 or so I worked for a saw mill company (Wall Mohart). The bridge we crosses every trip in and out aw North of Clinton and went to Gang ranch. once over the Fraser we went up the south branch of the road to the west about 20 miles to our site. Loved the area and the surrounding country and enjoyed the work as a lumber piler, canter man and occasional saw sharpener and repair man. very second Thursday, the mill was shut down early to let our trucker get caught up moving the cut lumber to the planner site.as our yard would be full. A few of us workers around the same age often stayed in the camp on those weekends, and went hunting for deer, elk, bear and sheep.Great time walking and scouting out the area.

Roll up some rough carpet, dig out a channel, Screw the carpet to some straight branches and lay in channel. At the bottom end, lay a line of larger rocks as a stop. Gather up a bunch of similar sizes of rocks and stack them to stand upright to the top of the channel. These rocks act as riffles. When done, pile the riffles on the bank and wash the carpet into a pail. You can put everything back into place to catch gold from the next flood. Doing this in multiple sites is very possible.

Highbanking isn't illegal, you just have to have a free miner's permit, and have a settling pond set up so that no tailings / sediment can re-enter the river. And it has to be on a claim, either yours or one you have permission to work, can't just prospect highbank anywhere you want. River run sluicing is very illegal though.

I grew up hunting and fishing in the wilds and miss that part of my life greatly. When I seen an old abandoned house or even a small log cabin, it makes me kinda sad. The hard work, and the hopes and dreams that went into such a place, the family raised there, the memories etc, all gone, and only a rotting shell left, for a time, to show, it reminds me of my own mortality.
