Listen: thetruepanoptic...
The latest album from Panopticon not only combines black metal with bluegrass and American folk music, but it's a bonafide musical epic as well.

Just found this album through some year end lists- honestly my surprise of the year, I had never heard of Panopticon before and I haven't listened to much black metal, but this is incredible and makes me want to get into the genre more. Your review is really awesome and detailed, you do a great job of describing the music itself. Lots of good adjectives and control of the review. The Long Road trilogy stands out to me, and part 2 is one of my favorite songs of the year I think.

Panopticon is so is good that it makes me want to learn how to play a bunch of instruments and start my own one-man Black Metal band. Which is saying something, because I'm incredibly lazy.

I would respect them more if their writers weren't so freaking snobby, especially on a negative review. They fill their reviews with these obnoxious metaphors, and sometimes they will quote an artist to try and refute their claims in light of how they feel. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but some of their writers won't even go into that much of a discussion about the music (it feels like they're more interested in dissing musicians they don't like), and I have a huge problem with that.

Dude, to each their own; I just went to check out that terrible tin flute/recorder track you mentioned and, I don't know, it works for me. It has a particular aesthetic constructed via the chaotic versus simple contrast. Anyway, though, to each their own ^_^ Great review, thanks for turning me onto this unique band. I've listened to countless black metal/folk bands in my day but I've never heard one that uses folk from southern USA until now. Also, I love the AR effect your doing with the album covers in the background. That's super creative and cool! Kudos

I always thought of black metal, or at least traditional black metal,to be very culturally tied and having folk influences in the first place. I understand that there's classical and rock/punk/metal influences as well, but it's the the theme that I always found appealing about black metal, the dramatic sound, profound lyrics, and cultural influence, that made me want to listen to it. (This, however, does not mean I like all black metal.)
