It's so fun to watch someone discover this wonderful medium! Just a couple of things from someone who has been using these "pastels" for years: Regular soft pastels don't have a binder that adheres them to the paper. These do! That's why they feel creamy and soft rather than chalky or powdery. I'm convinced it's some kind of oil because on sanded paper PanPastels dissolve Polychromos and Pablos to an extent. Try it, it's fascinating and incredibly useful. I can usually get away with not fixing my drawings simply by rubbing the PanPastels into the paper until there's no loose pigment on the surface anymore (doesn't work with heavy applications). Unfortunately that means there is no cheap alternative. Soft pastels simply won't bind to the paper the way these do. But the good news is that PanPastels truly mix like paint so you can get away with a very limited palette. I haven't found a cheaper alternative for the Sofft tools either. Makeup sponges behave differently. The tools can be washed though! I use the little sponge tips until they literally fall apart.

I was crushed as you were opening the pans and seeing so many that were broken 😞. But they are beautiful 🤩 colors. I do have some Panpastels myself. I have not used them yet. I’ll wait for your next video to see how you use them for the background. Plus I would love ❤️ to see you do a full color page using these. Thank you 🙏🏽 so much for the video. I bought several Pan Pastels from Brick and I would say about half of them arrived broken to some point. I don't think there is any way around it. A friend of mine said even going to the store to buy them you have to sift through them all to find ones that aren't broken so I think broken Pan Pastels is just a part of life. You would think that as easy as they break, they would come up with better packaging from them.

😪 Oh man! My heart broke for you seeing all those broken pastels. I've found that's a problem when you get art supplies from Amazon. I think it's because the people that box & ship them just don't understand how fragile some things are. I recently got the pure & shades set plus the colorless blender . I love them! As you said they are SO pigmented. I will probably get the tints & extra dark shades sometime in the future!

If you contact the company about the broken pans will you please let us know what their response is? I was just ready to place an order for the entire set but will wait now. The best part is that they are absolutely gorgeous colors but the worst part is the breakage problem. I want them in my media collection so very much because they are one of the most beautiful mediums I’ve ever seen!

Consider ordering them from a reputable art supply shop. They will know how to properly package pastels. And if one arrives broken anyway then they will be able to replace the PanPastel because they carry them open stock as well. Or see if you can find a store near you that carries PanPastels. :) Out of the 30+ pans I've bought over the years not a single one has arrived broken or broken during moving. Now that I've said that I'll probably drop one lmao

I bought the starter black, white and greys they were all broken except the black, they checked my order and refunded the whole amount of money right off. They can still be used but carefully as Pamela said.

My subscriber who gifted these to me did put in for a return and replacement. The new set came and was also damaged, but not as badly as the first. I wasn't even able to swap out some of the colors from one set with the other because it was the same exact colors that were damaged. She was so sweet and tried with another set so now I have the portrait set which is beautiful. Those came earlier today and not a broken one in the set. I can't wait to use them on a portrait.

There is a hack video on here about pouring rubbing alcohol on the broken pieces give powder a stir and it dissolves back into a solid block c

I love panpastels! But you're right, broken ones can be messy and it's a bit expensive. Gorgeous color and swatches! Thank you for sharing your new coloring supplies. My advice...Don't use the towers, as you have experienced the problems they can produce with storing and accessing this medium. Use the plastic palettes that you can store sideways. You'll have to buy some, but they are way more convenient. I put them in Artbin storage containers. Also, make sure to have wet wipes around, and I also like to use cheap vinyl gloves, because I'm not one of those people that likes messy hands. Fun medium, though! I like them a lot. They are great for very quick coverage. EDIT: Also, broken up pan pastels are very common, unless you buy a set that comes in the sideways palette. I've never bought one like that that came broken. I have experiences quite a few busted up ones buying them open stock, though. It's annoying, but eh...I just deal with it. It's no big deal to me. They are messier, but they go down on the surface the same way.

There's a way to fix the broken\crushed pan pastels but for the life of me I'm not sure what channel it was but they came out perfectly after they dried!

When you use these beautiful colors will you also need to use a fixative spray on the coloring page?

Beautiful colors, but like loose face powder! 😮 Yikes!! Cloud makers! ☁️ Air quality control, no breeze. 🙊 Maybe tap a tiny bit onto a printer paper and use them from there if Amazon didn't replace.

I was sad, but Amazon did replace the set one time. The second set came and had a few more that were damaged, but not as badly as the first set. I am fine with the few in this second set that are damaged and they do still work just the same.

These were a gift so I'm so grateful to have them. I probably wouldn't have had them otherwise and have wanted some Panpastels for a very long time. They were on my Amazon wish list so that's where they were ordered from. I don't have a Blick near me. Oh goodness...if I did, I would be in so much trouble! LOL

Ive stopped ordering art supplies from Amazon. Id rather pay a bit more and get them from someplace else. Amazon doesnt even bother with bubble wrap, Ive gotten tins of pencils in just a thin grey mailing envelope and damaged. They suck at all their packaging.
