I have very fond memories of my mom drying pansies. She would do them inside books and then make greeting cards with them. Since she has passed I have found many pansies in several of her old books. What a treasure. I didn’t even know that they were edible.

hey sista i just finished a wild pansy tea a little off topic but i love you use hessian sacking to line your hanging baskets i have used all sorts over the years my resident wildlife harvest my liners to make their nests and they are so clever i have watched birds go underneath to get to the worms creating a hole in the bottom of the liner naughty beings x

The pansies flower taste makes me think of Chinese sweet peas as I nibble pods in my garden...yummy. Pansies only come back one year so how do you keep them year after year? They are my favorite flower 😍

I tried once so far, was not at all successful, but I will try again, I am thinking direct seeding in the fall would be the best way and I have not tried that yet.

It depends on where I pick them. The ones on my deck in pots, I do not wash but if they are from out front in the ground, I spray with homemade vinegar then rinse since I cannot be certain if a dog may have peed on them.

I have lots of wild Johnny-jump-ups that come up in early spring...those are the same right? Next spring I will try to remember to cut some and dehydrate too....thanks for the info.

Yes! I forgot to mention in the video that those are also considered "wild pansy" and are higher in the medicinal properties than the larger, cultivated varieties :D

I live in Southern Missouri and the jump-ups are usually up in March.

My husband and I are preparing to go on an extended RV-trip throughout the States. I just planted some pansies and am anxious to start working with them. Not sure where I learned this but I learned you can eat marigolds also if true how do I use them?

I would recommend calendula over the standard marigold. Calendula has more medicinal benefits and better flavor. Your typical marigold tastes bitter where calendula has a very mild taste that can go well in anything food wise but also is wonderful for the skin. This is why I like to use marshmallow, pansies, and calendula in my infused oil blend that I use in my skin cream

heidi, I am rewatching this as I am harvesting like crazy my pansies! wanted to ask if you dehydrate more than just the flowers for your soaps and things? like the leaves and stems and roots? thanks =)

Though you certainly can dehydrate the stems and leaves, I always just focus on the flowers for the sake of the colors. I can get plenty of marshmallow leaves that have similar properties as the pansies so I just do not bother with the rest of the pansy plant.

I use my dehydrator plugged into my solar power all through the spring, summer, and fall. Because of the large quantity of herbs and other things I dry throughout the season, this is the best way for me to do it. Plus, our humidity makes things take even longer to dry than in other places and I just do not have the space and time for that with how much I do. I have tried it before with other herbs and it just takes way too long here. Otherwise, I would dry them naturally :)

I have dried orange peel in the late Winter & early Spring by cutting them up in little pieces & spreading them on a foiled lined cookie sheet on the dash board of my car. Just face the vehicle towards the sun. Free power! You should probably crack the car window a bit, so it doesn't get steamy. Pansies would probably dry even quicker.

Ok, stupid question. I'm new at planting and trying to learn. Are pansies perinnals or annuals? I'd like to use them for soaps and such and I'm sure my husband would love them in his salads. Thanks for any help.

Not at all a stupid question, there is a lot of confusion on this one. Most people grow their pansies as annuals, but they are actually perennials. As you can see the ones I show in that narrow strip of garden - I have four that came back from last year. I have some in pots that also came back but some of mine also died. I bought a lot of new ones this year and am hoping to keep them better protected so they will come back again.

Some are ones that come back but every year I buy a couple new ones to add to what I have for more color. I will not longer be buying the fancy big ones as they just do not have as much medicinal benefit as the more wild varieties (Johnny Jump Ups/Viola Tri Color)

Yes, any, but the more wild ones are more medicinal (the small ones that are called viola tricolor). It is rare I am able to get them to grow for me from seed so I normally buy the plants in early spring

All are edible and have a certain amount of benefits but the best ones for higher benefits are the Viola Tricolor also known as Johnny Jump Ups

Rain Country thank you so much! Yes, true. I use viola tricolor for my herbal cream. But I was gifted a big basket of the horned pansies and wanted to make a hydrosol with them, but couldn’t really find their benefits.

I am not sure, I have a lot of garden related videos out there and with over four years and over 1200 videos, I really cannot keep up on all I have. I do not think I have one specifically on that one topic but likely talk about some of it here and there in my garden videos. The thing is though, each climate and location is going to be very different as to when is the best time to plant. If you live in the south for example, you will want to start far earlier than I do

No, they do dry up very tiny, thus why I like the larger ones for drying but the smaller ones have higher medicinal properties and that is what I want

Yes, you can, I just have not done it yet. I plan to try a small amount here soon to see how I like them to add to my mixed greens, but want to use the thicker, bushier leaves that come on after they have been pruned down like I did to the ones out front.

I have yet to do well with seeds other than ones that fall from the plants and germinate from there. Even then I do not get many. Ones I have tried from packages never germinate. I end up buying starts each year. Keep hoping to get to a point where I will not need to do that but I may have to just give up on them and put more time and energy into the plants that do best with little work, like marshmallow and calendula

Good morning. I had a couple pansy plants last year now tons of babies all over! Probably a dumb question but are all pansies safe to eat. If so I'm going to use them like crazy😆 Also I started the fruit fermentation. Is the fruit supposed to float to top and do I discard it. It smells kinda like wine.
