The great southern Trendkill is Criminally underrated. And if you don't believe me check out the song list (I'll put them below) and let me know what song if any do you consider weak of this album, because this album doesn't have a single weak song (maybe suicide note 2, but this one grew on me). Not only does it not have weak songs it doesn't even have ok songs... every song falls into amazing status, but I'd love to know what songs people consider weak of this album? Cowboys from hell for Example I consider to have 1/3rd weak songs. 1/3rd I think are ok (and they're the type of ok that I don't enjoy listening too, Pantera's still trying to find their sound and some of their chorus's aren't enjoyable to listen too) and 1/3rd are great. It's a sloppy album. It's certainly not a Gold tier album. I don't know why this album commonly gets overrated. Vulgar, Far Beyond Driven and Trendkill are Pantera's Gold status albums, which everyone always brings up Trendill like it was a bust... I can't begin to imagine... what could they have possibly done better? It is a heavily manufactured studio album, but the end result sounds amazing. 1. The Great Soutern Trendkill - amazing song 2. War Nerve - Amazing Song 3. Drag The Waters - Amazing Song 4. 10's - amazing song 5. 13 Steps to Nowhere - Amazing 6. Suicide Note 1 - Amazing 7. Suicide note part 2 - ok (this song grew on me) 8. Living Through Me - Amazing - however I find the chorus to be a kind of weak, but the rest of the song is excellent. 9. Floods - slows things down a bit and has nice harmonies... excellent mood swing setting the stage for the last two songs to blow you away. 10. The Underground in America - Amazing 11. Sandlasted Skin - Amazing

I agree with Vulgar. Far beyond Driven easily being Gold, but I strongly disagree with these guys on Cowboys. It's one of the least solid metal albums from any band that I've been a fan of over the years. 1/3rd of the songs suck. 1/3rd are ok, but they're the type of ok that I'd just rather not listen too, which leaves only 1/3rd of the album which I consider great songs. But the album sounds very raw with Pantera still trying to find their sound... many of the choruses sound drab and weak.

This video is really making me want to go listen to Pantera again. You just never forget the good stuff that came out of this band. I will say, despite having no mainstream potential, The Great Southern Trendkill is very underrated. We need a tier-list video for Metallica soon. I really want to hear Luke's thoughts on Load and Reload since he's hinted at not liking them before. Also, cause I think Load is underrated. Reload also has some gems on it.
@ZaneKriglowitz3 жыл бұрын
I second for Metallica! I have a feeling Load/Reload will end up in at least aluminum here. But yeah, Load has some great stuff on it, it's just different and maybe it goes on for a little too long (they had to cut out the last minute of Outlaw Torn on the CD version to make the 80 mins) But other than that... I feel like if you go into it turning off the thought in your head that it's Metallica (if possible) you might have a different take on it. Just my opinion.

5. Reinventing the steel: they have no bad releases, but this is like a filler album in their discography, like the fall from gorillaz or renegades by RATM, goddamn electric is still in the top 5 songs 4. Cowboys from hell: In context of their other work, CFH is their heaviest album, it gets straight up thrash at some points, but still plenty of groove, Domination is head-banging fun 3. Vulgar display of power: this might make people mad, but not only is it a great album, but's also the album that got them exposure, with songs like "walk" "this love" and "mouth for war", this is peak Phil, having some very impressive screams and vocal runs, live in a hole is probably my favorite pantera song 2. Far beyond driven: the 90's was the age of grunge, people kinda stopped caring about metal as much, don't get me wrong, I love grunge more than metal, but it is close, anyways, this album is less groovy, it's down-tuned, distorted, and really dark in a lot of ways, shedding skin gets you pumped 1. The great southern trendkill: I love the blues feel of this album, the ballads, like the suicide note saga, are some of the best ballads of all time, the moment "the great southern trendkill" starts, you know you're in for a treat, "suicide note, pt. 2 is WAY better than 1.

Your rankings are actually exactly to a T, how I would rank them, with not one difference which is bizarre, because I thought I was the only one. The great Southern Trendkill, Far Beyond driven and Vulgar are their Gold tier albums and I rank them in the same order you do. What makes southern Trendkill so good is that it doesn't have a single weak song on the album in fact it doesn't even have a single ok song (maybe suicide note 2 is only ok, but that song grew on me), every song is excellent. Cowboys from hell I would put into Silver or bronze, because it's not even close to being a solid album. 1/3rd of the songs are weak, 1/3rd are ok (but they're the type of ok that don't fair well with re-listens, because the band is still trying to find their sound and the choruses don't fair well and 1/3rd are great.

I'd first like to say that I love the new trend of Tier Lists. Particularly given that you've done a FAOAT review of "Master Of Puppets" and a RTP of "St. Anger", as well as snarked at the Load records in a number of reviews (without actually saying what you thought was wrong with them), it'd be good to see a full blown tier list for the band.

Then 'Diamond' Darrell listened to the album and realized that he wanted Pantera to sound like what Date made Overkill sound like. This is why they hired Date when they got signed by Atlantic Records. Still to this day you can tell that the sound of Pantera is miles ahead of anything else that was released in the 90's. I'm not talking about music, only about production and sound quality. The Reinventing album sounds worse imo and you can tell why, it was not produced by Terry Date!

So the first three records were essentially teenagers that were playing virtual covers of their idols in VH and Judas Priest. If their dad wasn't in the music biz, these would never have been recorded. These would have been one of those unreleased demo compilations you find on youtube, or additions added as bonus tracks on box sets and such. The difference is, their formative and growing years were actually professionally recorded and released. That simply doesn't happen with most bands. Then they got Phil for the fourth record. There was a slight shift, but it was also Phil belting out those same style tunes. The best thing to take from these records is that Dime can fucking shred with the most talented of the 80's shredders, and he was developing his riff writing. And Phil could sing his fucking balls off. Prior to the gruff, harsh growl, Phil was doing his best Halford impersonation. THEN, realizing they needed their own trip, hair metal was dying and they didn't wanna fall into the developing ocean of thrash bands, Phil assumed some of the stylings of his pals from Exhorder(yes, they were doing it first). They added some of that power groove vibe from Exhorder on Cowboys, but then mastered that style all their own on Vulgar. So just think of those first four as glorified demos. Cuz that's all they would be if their dad didn't own a recording studio.

I'll never forget putting Far Beyond Driven on, when I got the CD for Xmas, and the opening riff kicked in and my life changed. Then that double bass pattern on Becoming... Holy scheisse. Also remember seeing them live for that tour, the kick drum was so powerful that Becoming was almost painful... In the best way possible. Still the 2nd best show I've ever seen... #1 was the Great Southern Trendkill tour and only because it was in a better venue.

Btwn their last 5 albums i think i might skip a total of 4 songs...? Maybe? Cowboys has some tracks im not crazy about but they stay in the playlist, 9/10. Vulgar is a 10/10, Far Beyond is a 10/10, Southern Trendkill is 11/10 and Reinventing is a 9/10. Far Beyond Driven's only low point is Good Friends and Pills of course, but I'm glad its not long and that it actually flows with the theme and vibe of the album. That song actually turns the album into something a little more interactive and introspective.

Metal Magic is the only album I'd have in the trash section. Projects and I Am the Night have at least 4/5 tracks each that have catchy riffs and great solos, it's always been the vocals that let them down. Personally, I would also rank Power Metal higher than the Great Southern Trendkill.
@dimebag5053 жыл бұрын
Mine would be Gold: Cowboys from hell, Vulgar display of power, Far beyond driven Silver: Great southern trendkill Bronze: Reinventing the steel, Power metal. Aluminium:Projects in the jungle, I am the night. Trash:Metal Magic

Sorry for that last one, just in that I shouldn't have said wrong in a rude manner like that. My ranking: Honestly, I rank Vulgar, Driven and Trendkill as virtual equals. They are all borderline silver/gold. Vulgar and Driven have the most filler, but they each have more 'hits'/massive tunes than Trendkill. Trendkill doesn't have those 'anthem' types, but front to back is the most consistent, solid, menacing work. I love Cowboys, and a few tunes are absolutely stellar like CFH, Psycho Holiday, Domination, but it's got some filler too. I have a lot of difficulty ranking Reinventing the Steel. I will say this, listen to the recently released remixed version of it, it's not as perfectly polished as the original, which i think is a good thing. It's got some really cool tunes. Yesterday Don't Mean Shit, Revolution is my Name, etc., but it just doesn't call to me to be played like the first four.

Being a person that lives in a Red State (Oklahoma), Pantera was a Red State rock band. Every borderline bigot had Pantera playing in the background in the early 90s. It sucks too because I love most of their albums too.

@@soulcrusher807 But the Planet Caravan cover is perfect! There are people who don't like it?! GF&BP is like an interlude, right? Love all the Pantera albums from CFH on, and I get why people have a soft spot for Power Metal. But for me, each Pantera album is like an awesome rabbit hole to fall into.

Best concert of my life was Pantera, White Zombie and the Deftones. I was 16 years old and all of the had amazing sets. White Zombie’s stage show was ridiculous right down to having crucified clowns lowered from the ceiling before playin grease, paint and monkey brains. First time I heard Revolution is My Name I was sitting in the back of a police car and it premiered on the radio. Apparently the cop was into rock because the station WAAF in Boston. We were in North Providence, RI at the time. Turns out it was all a misunderstanding and the cops were cool about it. I was like “No, it’s cool. Now I have a cool story about Pantera.” Now talking about the time Phil sat on me because he didn’t see me sitting on the Superjoint Ritual tour bus seat smoking with the guys is another story…

To my mind, Pantera peaked with Power Metal and Cowboys. I haven't listened to the Terry glaze albums, so not gonna include 'em Gold: Power Metal, Cowboys from hell Trash: Everything else An unpopular opinion I know. But I can't say I'm much of a fan of groove metal. From Vulguar Display and out I feel the music is too slow, too serious, boring, and lacks melody. Phil Anselmo particularily can't sing for shit on Vulguar display and out. I prefer his soaring high notes on Cowboys/PM and the speedy and melodic riffage from Dimebag. I know their groove output can be fast, however the mindless powercords are boring as fuck (looking at you, Slaugthered and Strength Beyond Strength). What was wrong with the 80s speed metal like riffage on the song Power Metal itself? Anyway I think I made my point. Power Metal and Cowboys both show the melodic side of pantera. They also do a much better job of showing how good Phil Anselmo is as a singer. Cause he actually sings on those albums. I think Power metal and Cowboys are more fun to listen to. They have more energy in them.

WRONG. At the time it was released, Vulgar was not considered commercially viable. That record is what started to make that commercially viable. But it was groundbreaking at that time.

The Pantera glam albums were better than a lot of glam that got popular. And sorry, but Cowboys from Hell is bronze. Vulgar silver, Far Beyond Gold, Trendkill Gold, Steel bronze. Five Finger Death Punch are Pantera if you strip away the song writing of Dime and just made songs based off the Phil fake tough guy act.
