I'd guess the odds are statistically around 90% or more in favor of the younger, current, and more MMA actively practicing fighter, however, we are talking about Demetrius F*cking Johnson here, what were the odds of him defending the belt 11 times in the UFC, moving across the world, dominating an entire other legitimately talented organization and becoming the greatest of all time ? And honestly, he has only officially been retired for several weeks but its actually like1 year off or something, that off could be equated to a injury healing or a contract dispute lol. He COULD jump right back on the horse right now and be top dog pound for pound conversation contender. That’s a long time out of serious training for an older fighter. And by the time they fought it would probably be a 2+ year layoff. I don’t doubt DJ could bring a good version of himself if given enough time, but would he even be as good as he was the last time we saw him fight? GSP did it after a 4 year layoff, but he was younger and was still seriously training MMA like he was still active during his entire layoff.

The division isn’t necessarily cooked, they’re just having the same problem featherweight had for awhile with Volk/Holloway. Royval/Moreno keep beating everyone else and they’ve both lost to Pantoja twice. A lot of people think Moreno won the 2nd fight like Volk vs Holloway 2. Although I would love to see DJ fight Pantoja. DJ’s star has grown so much since leaving the UFC and starting KZbin, it might be the biggest fight in flyweight history. But sadly it won’t happen.

Jon jones is an active UFC fighter and the current heavyweight champ that is trying to avoid unifying his belt vs the interim champ Tom Aspinall. I agree that it’s reasonable to expect Jon to defend his belt against Tom. However, DJ is a retired fighter that has said repeatedly he’s completely done fighting long before Pantoja ever called him out. He’s not even in the UFC. He hasn’t been training MMA for over a year and a half at this point. He has a family and career outside of fighting that he’s trying to prioritize. At what point do we let retired fighters rest and move on with their lives without calling them scared whenever someone feels like calling them out? You think these fighters owe you fights until they die?
