I would LOVE a breakdown of what freeze dryers truly cost to operate, if you get the time. Another KZbin homesteader in the US says hers costs about $200/week to run it, which I find prohibitive, obviously.

Lady beetles These tiny, oval, red and black insects are selective hunters that use visual and olfactory cues to find spider mites. Adult ladybugs can eat up to 100 spider mites per day.
@MagdaRantanplan2 ай бұрын
agreed, but carefull ordering them online, there are some (i think chinese Ladybugs) that can be quite invasive and take over your area and can whipe out native ladybugs by just eating all their food.

We get spider mites in our greenhouse with the dryness, mist the plants as soon as you see them, they hate moisture. They are like little blood suckers, mist mist mist. They hate water. Also we grow sacrificial eggplants, everything loves them and leaves other things alone. Like you, I have also been watching the Gridlessness channel for years. Without question Jeff, Rose, and their five daughters, Sarah, Abigail, Julia, Christina, and Keziah, are all remarkable human beings. The good example that they set for their subscriber base is truly second to none. I can honestly say that Gridlessness has been my all-time favorite social media channel from the day I discovered them. In fact, I enjoy their video's so much that I'll go ahead and re-watch their content from time to time. Because even the second or third time around a Gridlessness video will always put me in a good mood. Therefore, in my opinion, Gridlessness is the best off-grid, do it yourself, hunting, fishing, gardening, animal husbandry, cooking, while having a blast doing it, channels that the world wide web has to offer. I pray that this sustainable lifestyle becomes the rule and not the exception for everyone. Take care. sincerely, Dean O. :-I

Spider mites thrive in dry conditions which I'm guessing the greenhouse stays very dry in the winter. So if your plant leaves are dry it's perfect conditions for them. You could try using a sprinkler inside the greenhouse during the growing season to wet the leaves. Then alternate between neem oil, pyrethrin based insecticide and canola oil insecticidal soap every three days. Also don't cann nectarines they are not good, I did it last year and they go mushy in the jar. Which looking back makes sense because nectarines have a mushy texture unlike peaches.

I wanted to built a freestyle place like theirs. First mistake was talking to the local building inspector. The newest edition to the building code is so restrictive. I rescued 7 double pane windows from a house that was being renovated. I can't use them because they do not have a thermal break in the frame and the special coating on the glass.

To get rid of spider mites is tsp of dawn dish soap tblsp of Rose oil and one gal of water. Thoroughly spray plants and area down. Let dry and come back the the next day and spray again. you can continue if they have laid eggs, until all have been distroyed. Hope this helps.

Hi Chelsea! I replied to the mite issue over on the other channel, but I went ahead and copied and pasted it here too. Hello! So sorry about your mites. They can be very destructive. I use to be a crop scout. Primarily peppermint. Mites were a huge deal in the fields as they could melt a field down before you know what happened. Here are a few tidbits about them. I hope this helps… Mites generally will start on the lower leaves and work their way up the plant. Once they get to that point you definitely have a problem. So make sure you’re keeping an eye on the bottom leaves. A “loop” is a must to see the mites before an infestation. Takes a little practice to learn how to use one. So what to do… You can spray with water and wash them off if you get them early. You definitely have to repeat daily. Predator mites are a good option if they start to get bad. But don’t wait. You can also use neem oil. Usually won’t kill the eggs. Eggs hatch every seven days so you’ll need to reapply for a while. Use your loop and keep an eye out throughout your greenhouse. They can migrate. Keeping on top of them is the key. Sure hope you can get a handle on them!! Just started watching you via “Little Mountain Ranch”. I’ve been watching them for quite some time. They are one of my favs. So fun that you did one together. Your root cellar is AMAZING!! As well as your home. Thank you! :)

It’s funny, even though I’m subscribed to both of your channels, I never imagined you would appear in one another’s videos. I’m excited to see where you go in your travel trailer. I highly recommend going to the Thunder Bay Ontario area. It is beautiful! My sister and I took a trip completely around Lake Superior this past summer, and we both fell in love with that area. It’s on the Trans-Canada Highway, so it’s an easy (but long, from BC!) drive. The views of Lake Superior are breathtaking! We camped at Trowbridge Falls Municipal Campground, just east of Thunder Bay, and it was very peaceful there. I hope to return to the area to do more exploring!

You can use predatory mites against the spider mites if you´re searching for a natural solution. There are several companies you can buy them from. Koppert Canada for example. Spieder mites built up a resitant to any product over a short period- so if you use natural or others sprays it´s best to change them up from application to application.
