My Spice Cabinet Organization Video: • Spice Cabinet Organiza...
There was a bit of a problem lurking behind the cabinet doors here at the farmhouse.
Instead of a layout that made sense, plates near the dining room and food near the stove, things were scattered throughout with no rhyme or reason.
We don't have a traditional walk in pantry here, so all our food has to be stored in the cabinets. When we first moved in I kind of just started putting things up there with no particular plan. Canned goods, dried quinoa, and condiment staples were shoved in the far right cabinet. Baking goods hung out in another area. Spices were over by the stove, and vitamins were to the right of the sink.

I was ready to do something about my disheveled mess of a pantry, or lack thereof.
Organization totally isn't my strong suit. That's why my only advice for keeping a tidy house involves being a minimalist and getting rid of everything that doesn't bring joy. It is the only way I can stay on top of the clutter. Instead of storing it in nicely labeled bins and totes, I just get rid of it with reckless abandon.
But food, well.... you need it. The more you have, the better. And therein lies the problem. Organization is a must.
I took everything out of the cabinets, and got rid of quite a few mugs and plates that we never use. I just kept enough bowls/plates in our cabinets that we use for a meal. Half the time they don't even get put back up there. It's just eat, rinse, repeat.
I also took this opportunity to clean up, and paint, the insides of my cabinets. The people who lived here before painted the insides blue. Since the color wasn't totally offensive, I left it. I mean who has time to paint the inside of cabinets?! Not me. But I'm glad I finally I did it. Everything looks so fresh and tidy with a couple coats of white. I used the same chalk paint I always use. It goes over just about any surface without any prep work.
I spent the better part of Saturday afternoon researching the best options for dry food storage. I knew I wanted glass, to avoid the chemicals in plastic. They would also have to be pretty, of course. I loved loved looved the look of weck jars, but they are so darn expensive and the clamp/gasket setup can be a total pain. Well wouldn't you know it, I came full circle right back around to my beloved mason jars. They are cheap, durable and pretty. Should have known. Plus, I love that I can get plastic lids so I don't have to worry about rust with the metal lids....

I LOVE mason jars. I use them in my pantry as well. I also use them in my refrigerator for some foods. When I get home from the grocery store, I wash my grapes and take them off the stems and put them in mason jar. Also, with strawberries, I will wash them and take the green tops off and store them in a mason jar. They will last 2 weeks and sometimes longer...that is if we don't eat them first. I also put my lettuce in mason jars and then use my jar sealer to seal them and the lettuce doesn't get brown.

The white was a huge improvement, and all that branding on the packages stacked together in cupboards is so busy. The jars give a great deal of order to it all. I'm so impressed. Now to find jars. Beautiful kitchen! I love storing in glass jars and purchased the plastic lids as well. After using them for a few years, this is what I discovered: they are NOT leak proof! If they are not leak proof then they must not be keeping my food as fresh. I went back to using the canning lids and rings. If I find they are becoming rusty, I recycle and put a new one on. Lisa, love it! I’m definitely doing this. I wanted to tell you that I make my own liquid laundry soap and I store it in 12 quart mason jars. It is so pretty. It’s a concentrate so I add one quart of soap to two quarts of water in an old detergents bottle and just just that bottle lid to measure like I would regular soap. Been doing that for five years now and it’s one of the best things I’ve ever done. I think it’s the Duggar recipe. I use three bars of soap instead of two.

I love the big mason jars. I got the package of 6 last summer and use them for my flour, sugar, brown sugar, oatmeal and pancake mixes. I like the white lid idea so I may have to get some of those. Years ago before I started making homemade sauces i used to buy the Classico spaghetti sauce. I saved all of those jars for different items in my kitchen because they are mason jar's. And they have the ounces on the side of the jar as well

I love those tall mason jars with the plastic lids. I also keep spaghetti/salsa mason jars with the black or silver lids. I have found many uses for those smaller jars too, like I used to make "sun" tea in them and store the brewing tea in the frig after the water cooled down -- two jars of "sun" tea makes a gallon of iced tea, whether real tea or herbal. I like the idea of your chalkboard cabinet doors. I have written out easy breakfast recipes and snack ideas for my guys and taped them to the back of the doors with clear postal tape. I think it's time to repaint the inside of my cabinets too. Thanks for the inspiration!

Glass is the way to go! I personally don’t like plastic for the fact it’s not healthy and the lids are always a disaster to store. Class jars are much less porous and can be cleaned much better. I’m curious to know where I can get the mason jars with the white lids?

Just an FYI, I have a friend who eats very healthy. He makes his own fermented foods, he has sprouts of all kinds he grows etc. Despite that he started having severe health issues. Neurological symptoms etc. They traced it back to his love of tinned fish. Sardines and conch and others. They have a high heavy metal content and over time this had built up in his brain. I'd research this since this is something your husband eats as well. LOVE LOVE LOVE your content and your gorgeous home.

Love it. I also changed my food to mason jara due to a moth problem in my pantry. I highly recommend you a funnel for mason jars. It will make your life easier when you are filling them. It is pretty inexpensive (around $5) and it will change help you with clean up.

Perhaps putting the supplements in a bin so you can grab them all at once to bring them down would be helpful because you can't look through them unless you grab a step stool. Also I feel like it'd be easy to overlook items on the top shelf because there are too many things know what is truly there and they covering each other. The rest looks great!

If you run out of plastic lids the lids from mayo and mustard jars also fit. It is a major money saver to reuse those lids. My main problem is I do not have a large kitchen so I don't have a lot of cabinets or counter space. That will be my next big renovation, lower cabinets and countertops.

Great video! Love the paint pens idea. Quick tip: you can remove sharpies and paint pens from almost any surface with nail polish remover. 😊

As a teacher, I was forced to swap my beloved blackboards for white boards, which demanded wipe off pens. I was always in trouble with with caretaker, when had to ask him to come to my classroom & bring solvent, I’d used permanent marker again! I love that I can have blackboards again! I use chalk pens, from Amazon as well as good old chalk. My brother says I’m weird, but if I write something down on paper & put it “somewhere safe” it’s gone forever! I can’t lose my blackboards!

we found Mason Jar hand soap (but we use it for dish soap) dispensers. They are so cool and have a pump. We gave one to a neighbor who is FINALLY cleaning his house...but that's another story. Blech. Don't feel embarrassed, I can totally relate. Last year when I reorganized my pantry just after I moved, I went through much the same process and mess. It's nice to see someone else having the same process. Those weck and swing top jars are so cute, but rather impractical and expensive, so yeah I ended up with alot of Mason jars too! I especially like the pint and a half jars, I am definitely gonna have to get me some of them. 😉 Thanks for sharing your process, love the white marker for labeling idea!

I’m in love with your kitchen cabinets. I love the style and the hardware. I have been saving jars from coffee and sauces etc and I recently decanted all my items from packets and bags. A little off topic but I noticed your wooden cutting board. I would love if you could do a video on how to clean and care for them. I learned so much from your cast iron video and have switched from my non-stick to cast iron and love them. Now, to get rid of my plastic cutting board :)

I need cutting board help as well. Onion smells are an issue on wood so i use plastic. This would be a great video. ☺
