Two isolated sisters must determine if a mysterious stranger is their savior -- or a threat.
PANTSER is used with permission from Jan Verdijk. Learn more at janverdijk.nl.
A global epidemic has ravaged the planet, decimating much of the population. Amidst it all, two sisters, Roos and Mira, live in isolation in the woods, fending for themselves. Their parents left for help a month ago, but they haven't returned since.
Their hermetic world is ruptured when a stranger in a hazmat suit appears outside their home, promising them safety in a nearby underground bunker. The girls have a choice to make: to trust this stranger and strike out on their own, or stick close to home in the hopes that their parents return.
Written and directed by Jan Verdijk, this short thriller begins as a portrait of two loving sisters on their own, managing a difficult situation while navigating their increasingly ominous circumstances. It's a quiet, atmospheric film at first, focusing on the sisters and their sealed-off world. Telling details -- from the glimpse of a dead boy just outside the house, or choosing pickled vegetables or cat food for dinner -- tell us plenty about what's happened, and muted, eerie cinematography adds to the foreboding atmosphere.
But the focus in the first third of the film is on the relationship between Roos and Mira, with Roos taking the caretaker role of her younger sibling and quietly taking the measure of their situation. The performances here by young actors Nola Kemper and Femke De Booys are superb, balancing a fundamental innocence with an understated but growing uncertainty.
This quiet but ominous atmosphere is disrupted when the stranger appears. At first, he sounds friendly, but soon he begins asking questions, his tone becoming more insistent and appealing to the younger, more manipulatable Mira. His offer to escort the girls to a nearby underground shelter sounds appealing and sensible, but his manner is aggressive. The storytelling picks up the pace from here, propelling the girls into both a predicament and an ethical dilemma: do they trust the stranger and let him in? As the eldest sister, Roos must make a choice to manage a dire situation.
Roos's choice is drastic, and its consequence is laid out with truly nail-biting tension, each beat leading into a chain of choices that are riveting and shocking. Or perhaps not so shocking, especially in a world ravaged by disaster. PANTSER delivers a superbly crafted narrative that generates both suspense and compelling emotion. But, with a clear thematic connection to the real-life global pandemic, it also becomes a meditation on social trust and the effects of its erosion on ourselves. In times where survival seems certain, we retreat and shield ourselves from danger at all costs. But in the process, we become suspicious of others and sever our connection to the wider community. And, as Roos and Mira learn, it comes often at the cost of our humanity.

full of the usual holes in the science - I won't analyze that. It's obvious. Some beautiful details carried in the opening scenes: house is cold (kids wearing warmer clothes), no heat, no elec, no water pressure; obvious issues ignored in many such shorts. The kids are unarmed, tactically inept moving at night with portable lights on. Very realistic. Well-acted. Nice job mostly.

Ok. Thought this was excellent, but... if you sealed up your house, you would use all the oxygen inside over a relatively short period of time. “Based on oxygen alone, estimates are that the average person could survive in a completely sealed, airtight room for 12 full days!” That’s one room, so maybe multiply that by 10 rooms & that’s 4 months for one person, unless there are lots of plants in there. Now to the sealed suit guy... how does he eat, drink & go to the bathroom in it if he can’t let the air touch his skin? And who covered the bodies? And without a decontamination option, touching his suit should have been deadly. All those queries aside, it really was a good short. Makes you realise how quickly your principles could be set aside in a life or death situation like that, sadly. And how much we have probably all thought about what we would be willing to do in a deadly pandemic, especially with the recent taste of that type of situation that Covid & shows like The Walking Dead have provided. I wonder if people from 100 years ago ever really considered the practicalities of it? Whereas it’s such a commonplace theme these days in our entertainment.

What a nightmare situation! If he leaves them, they won't last much longer. Their parents aren't coming back, they're down to the last of their food, and no armor for the outside. If he takes Mira, it is very possible he won't come back for Roos. Either because he won't risk the journey back again, or something happens to him and/or Mira along the way. If I were Roos I would consider maybe leaving Mira to go with him, watch him closely on the journey, and if there is that bunker, have him give me both suits and I backtrack to get Mira myself. OR what they did. It was really the safest move but damn that would be a hard decision to make. I would want to trust him, but to ensure the least amount of risk for Roos and Mira, they would have to take him out. He had a lot of suspicious red flags, but even someone acting innocent could just be an act. In desperate situations like this, Roos did the smartest thing she could have done to give them the best chance of survival. Awesome short film.

He seemed to be telling the truth about the caves, horse, food etc. Doesn’t mean he wasn’t planning on satisfying some “biological urges” with the girls before they left though. If he’d been legitimate, he wouldn’t have insisted on staying the night before leaving, especially on the second day when they presumably made contact with him in the morning. He also wouldn’t have been creepy as hell

This doesn't make much sense. How did the guy eat while in that suit? Also, when he came into the house through the multiple enclosures, there was no decontamination protocols. Finally, if the house was really air-tight sealed, I didn't see any plants in there to generate oxygen. They would have suffocated. Interesting concept, but not realistically executed.

A much worse, virulent situation here, and now we know how many people will not cooperate as a society and instead believe in lies and not facts and science. We are lucky, so far, that covid was not nearly as bad as the situation depicted. I have been hugely disappointed in humans of late. When I was young, we all took shots against polio, etc. No one denied reality nor went against the general good. This film should be a warning, imo.

You are right - it has been absolutely shocking how many people went full anti-science even to the point of mandating an experimental therapy and threatening others with loss of jobs and livelihood if they didn't become guinea pigs for big pharma, which of course was exempt from liability in case of injury or death. You are also right that there was a lot of lying too - claims that if people took this experimental therapy, they couldn't contract or spread the illness, and so forth. Complete lies coming from ignorant and authoritarian political manipulators.

Then we’re all doomed, because unless you have a filtration system to let clean air in, or loads of plants, you’d die of lack of oxygen living in a sealed up house, probably within 4 months for one person in a house with 10 rooms. “Based on oxygen alone, estimates are that the average person could survive in a completely sealed, airtight room for 12 full days!”

To all those saying "he could have just left the food there" or "he could show them the horse" etc. Why couldn't at least the older sister have asked these very things of him to test him? Do you realize how ridiculous it is under these circumstances to accept that just killing the man was justified?
@dfb2913
@dfb2913 8 ай бұрын
Not ridiculous at all, he was acting totally creepy, got kind of irritated whenever he was even slightly questioned, violently told them that "if he wanted to break into he could", while hitting the glass wall, which is an outright threat, and in every interaction he didn't want to reason with the older sister, instead he was circumventing her to creepily try and convince the little one. What they did was 100% justified in this situation.
