Grand video man, they seem like really interesting guys and really passionate. I'd like to have heard his reasons for saying T-34s were rubbish though. They don't have the reputation of best medium general tank of ww2 for no reason.
@nickweston647210 жыл бұрын
Yeah but that's why T-34's were good. Cheap, numerous, efficient and hardy, panthers had a high level of upkeep and were even inspired by the T-34 :)
@headhunter19459 жыл бұрын
Nick Weston I can point out a few areas. The T-34 was good on paper. In practice, it had a lot of short-comings that added up. For instance, the steel used to rivet the tracks together was reported to be second-grade, and they were easy to immobilize. The metal used for the armor was brittle, and spalling occured easily: shots that hit the outside and bounce off the thick armor (good on paper, right?) would cause steel flakes and chips to violently explode on the -inside-, bouncing around and wounding or killing crewmen. The radios were in too short supply to put them in any tanks except the commander's, so that meant he could report to HQ but not communicate with his own tanks using it. Therefor German crews were able to coordinate fire without as much time and rounds wasted, the Russians were less organized in battle, wasting shots and time. Unlike tanks such as the Tiger, the T-34 was also only made to accomodate a crew of 4, which meant that the commander also had to act as the loader. On top of a lack of effective radio communication, this increases the ineffectiveness of coordinated tank firing during combat. Example: A german tank comes over the hill. The russian commander shouts or uses flags to signal to his tanks to shoot at it. Then he disappears and starts loading. In the mean-time, two other german tanks come over the crest to the side, but are not noticed, and while all 3 or 4 russian tanks are shooting overkill at the one german tank, the other two german tanks get away. By contrast, in the german tank the commander is able to A. continue to observe, because he does not have to load, and B. effectively use radio to tell some of his tanks to divert fire to the other targets that appear, resulting in more kills in the narrow window of opportunity before they get away or start firing back.
@nickweston64729 жыл бұрын
No Alsono Yeah the communication problems were a huge issue and that's really systemic to the entire Russian military especially early on in the war. But you need to look at the German reaction to their first encounters with the T-34 in 1941, yeah they beat them with superior tactics and communication but they also admitted that the T-34 was better than anything they had at the time. They couldn't punch through KV-1 armor and the T-34 had a better gun than either the panzer 3 or 4 at the time. I mean the Tiger, Panther, long barreled 4's and by extension the Stug through making the 3 obsolete were all reactions to Russian tank design. You'll get no argument from me that they were superior in every way to begin with or that they weren't surpassed just that they were rugged, hardy, easy to make, easy to use and there were loads of them.
@headhunter19459 жыл бұрын
Nick Weston Not having enough crew space to be able to have a dedicated commander in such an expensive piece of equipment alone seems like enough of a handicap, to be honest. The lack of radios and thus communication is just the icing on top of that. I'm sure as a crewman, the lack of space in general would be one of the complaints of this reenactor as well.

@@JohnsonTheSecond The one thing you didn't mention was the trousers. Also the sciffchen is more like the Heer pattern. The SS pattern had a curve to the sides. I'm not familiar with the shirt either. It looks more like an Allgemeine SS one to me but I wouldn't swear to it.
@JohnsonTheSecond3 жыл бұрын
@@longstreet0163 The undershirt can vary, the SS pattern was more brown. The trousers I can't really see with the angle and lighting but they may be black. The cap looks alright to me, maybe a bad repro - If not I'm sure the SS used M34s/38s too. So you have a little gripe with the cap, and his trousers colour.
