[Build-through: Panzer IV Ausf H Part III]
In this tutorial I show you the complete painting and weathering of Dragon's Pzkpfw IV Ausf H Autumn '43 Production, from the camo pattern all the way through the detail painting, streaking, mud and dust, and the wash.
I tried a new method of making mud splashes using a toothbrush and the results were really nice, hope that helps some people out :)
I also made up this way of making a heavily chipping 'white wash' field-applied camouflage as the video went and I'm incredibly pleased with the results. I hope this tutorial helps and inspires people to do a white wash camo :D

Great vid. Especially liked the mud effect on the tracks. Have you tried using Apple Barrel Acrylic paints? It comes in a assortment of colors (matte Melted Chocolate and matte Brown Oxide really great for mud effect). Mix paint with plaster then apply to your tank model for mud effect. If you want a slush mud effect add water. You can buy them at Wal-mart for $.50 a bottle. If you don't like the effect you can rinse/clean with water. If you decide later 6-9 mos you can clean with water and re-do it. Can be applied with a brush and you can do the tooth brush effect.

Hello form New Zealand: Have to admit that when you first started applying the white-wash I thought you had overdone it... Happy to say I was wrong, end result was/is superb. I have an old Italeri M24 that I'm looking to do in a similar style. Will be using what you've done here as a guide.

Thank you Ian. I have some more recent videos that show what I personally think are better techniques for doing the whitewash. One is on a Panzer III and the other is the StuG video that's about an hour long. If you're curious, those videos might also be helpful to you.

I will be doing that - only got limited time to browse the available video's. At the moment I've got an old Tamiya Panzer IV that I'm going to use as a 'mule' for the modulation technique if that goes well I'll use that technique on the Chaffee then white-wash over it... real-life permitting !!

Great job on that Panzer IV. I liked that method of putting the white wash and the mud on. I do have one suggestion though, on the russian tracks, you can see the ejector marks (little circles) on every other track. Those should be filled and sanded. Sorry for being a critic, but a great looking build like that one shouldn't have all that effort lost to a few little circles. Especially if you enter it in a model contest. Judges look for things like that.
@Panzermeister36
@Panzermeister36 9 жыл бұрын
Thanks man :) Yeah I know those marks are there and I hate Dragon for having them on all their T-34 tracks but I just can't be bothered to fill them hehe.

nice build up! don't forget to add mud or snow to the tracks on top going along the return rollers. and in the future if you ever do a tank that is going through snow only the tracks will get polished believe or not by the snow. dry brush the tracks with steel and the add the snow. and before it dries take a clean brush and remove some of the snow to expose the tracks.p.s.try baking soda for snow next time-it is a lot cheaper and looks great!

bob ahnert Thanks Bob! When I looked at the photos after I made the video only then did I realize that I'd missed putting mud along the top length of track. The photo at 36:30 makes it pretty clear. Thanks for the tips; I'm currently working on a T-40 Russian light tank and it will be in a similar whitewash with a snowy diorama. I think I'll tone done the mud too :)

Panzermeister36 Look at some archival photos or films to see how the snow is thrown by the tracks and then apply to your model.Also try adding some earth tone pigments or real dirt to your snow and then apply it. You will be surprised as how real it looks! I will be looking forward to the video.

bob ahnert Great ideas Bob! Adding pigments to the snow will add even more realism! I have many books on WWII AFVs so I try to look up photos in those and on the internet of the vehicle I'm modelling to see how it weathering it real life. Of course that's a lot easier on modern vehicles as photos of WWII vintage and usually black and white and quite low quality :) Again thanks for your help!

@Panzermeister36
@Panzermeister36 8 жыл бұрын
+2AKIS21 I have done a few videos on weathering tracks - my weathering tutorials. I just paint them a dark black-brown first, then give them a brown wash and drybrush with light grey. Nothing much, because I usually add mud onto them after that and it can cover most of that up. I haven't done a solid panzer grey tank yet, but I'm sure you can find a video on KZbin somewhere explaining that; we have a ton of great guys on here.

Looking good as the winter white wash was more of a diluted paint anyway, to make it easier to remove in the spring time. I'm curious, did you protect the original paint scheme before the winter wash? I agree about the pin marks, but it's your model... As a simple suggestion if I may, try a little dry brushing after all the oil,/Mig crap is dry with a lighter shade of the base coat color, just on high areas to bring some detail back after that nice white wash. I personally think pigments are a better weathering method than paint as paint just looks like dirty paint anyway. Track links look excellent.....
@Panzermeister36
@Panzermeister36 9 жыл бұрын
Thanks again :D I didn't protect the base coat as it was acrylics and all the stuff afterwards (whitewash, oils wash, pigments) all some off with white spirits which shouldn't effect the tamiya paint. It might though, I can't say for sure, but it all worked out. I actually went back and drybrushed some XF-55 and -60 a couple of months ago, after the video was done, and it looks really nice. I was planning on doing that in the video but it looked so good and I didn't want to mess it up. I built up the courage later though :) Pigments all the way!

@Panzermeister36

Hongypingpong Pongy Well it all depends on how you apply it. I think oils would work better than enamels for just a simple-product whitewash though. I think it would be hard to streak and wear out the enamels than oils would be.

You ever think it might be easier to paint certain hard-to-get to parts before gluing them on. Also I wonder if they sell models where you can paint the inside of them too, to show how the tank worked, but you don't glue the top turrets on, so you can take them off and see inside.
@Panzermeister36
@Panzermeister36 8 жыл бұрын
+Hennessy Blues I do think it'd be easier to paint it that way, but i'm lazy and like putting the whole thing together and painting it as one. And yes, there are kits like that. Some even have clear bodies to you can leave sections unpainted and see inside! Cool stuff, but a lot of work too

+Panzermeister36 Awesome job! I believe out of all the different white wash techniques, you have achieved the most realistic results. I've been building tank models since the early 70's and am familiar with the different paint chipping techniques such as the salt and or hairspray techniques, both of which yield good results, however most seem to way over do the paint chip look and under do the weathering. Tanks are mud magnets. The only clean tank is in the motor pool. Your white wash job looks natural and organic. Keep up the good work. Gross Deutschland !

I'm no modeller, but shouldn't you paint the side panels as if they were intact and then move them? It just looks odd that the camouflage pattern fits even though one of the side skirt panels is hanging off at an angle?
@Panzermeister36
@Panzermeister36 10 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure I did that, put the panel back straight before I put the camo on :) But it didn't change much as only a bit of the panel is covered in the end, and then of course the whitewash pretty much covered it all... but thanks for the pointer anyways man :D

I wouldn't consider selling many of my models, though I am highly humbled by your liking in them :D However, I am thinking about the possibility of doing commission work. Many other people do this too. Forces of Valor and other such companies sell finished models that are said to be very nice, though I can't attest to that. My local shop sells what I think is 1:48 or 1:50 scale finished models too, I don't know the manufacturer but I could check on Thursday.

I was in florida in october and ordered a patriot 105 from amazon to come to my hotel room. Got a message saying it was delayed so ordered thru another vendor which was also delayed so had to cancel both as I would be back in UK by the time they came. Going on a road trip to ny nj del md and wherever else takes my fancy so will get one there. Much mufh cheaper in the US. Just bought from eBsy HK a cheapy airbrush for 14 quid with p&p which came a few days ago but not used it yet. That will tide me over until in ny in june.

They did it to provide extra armour, though it didn't really work and added a ton of weight. Here's a photo: plus.google.com/b/117377533440333189245/+Panzermeister36/photos/photo/6102098319896651522?pid=6102098319896651522&oid=117377533440333189245

TheNameIsAlein They did it on Shermans too, but it added so much weight and caused so much more fuel usage while providing practically no more protection against the higher velocity German guns that Patton forbade it! plus.google.com/b/117377533440333189245/+Panzermeister36/posts/LnU8vpRRpEm?pid=6119605697487357714&oid=117377533440333189245

Excellent affects....I wonder how many mud pies the guy in the turret with the doors open got hit with.....? Did you forget under the turret bin or was that intentional? Never mind....:>} I hope that "Sculpt a Mold" doesn't have any resin.....you should wear a mask....if you don't believe me I got a little story to tell ya about enamel thinner.
@Panzermeister36
@Panzermeister36 9 жыл бұрын
Yeah that turret door got quite muddy lol but I think it looks good as in winter everything's wet and the ground turns to mud so the crew would drag that everywhere. Also it shows up better on white than on yellow of grey or green :) Those are my excuses anyways; it's a bit more muddy than it should be! I didn't do the turret bin because the crew would only paint the exposed areas to save time and paint, and I'm supposing the side skirt fell off after that. But you say that in the vid yeah :) I don't think it has any crap in it but I'm careful about breathing that stuff in; I wear a mask if I'm doing it for a while. Tell away I love stories! Did you pass out at the bench? :D
@milky55way2012
@milky55way2012 9 жыл бұрын
No I didn't pass out but one time quite awhile ago now, I inhaled some enamel thinner through my mask......I guess the filters were not good or something. Nasty stuff, I broke out in hives....lasted about a week if I recall, but all is well now.

Have you watched youtube member Hamilkar Barkas video Muddy Road ? If not check out his channel because he shows how to make ultra realistic mud and wet mud effects for 1/35th scale using actual mud and wood glue. Your model is extremely good but if you`d used his mud technique it would make your excellent model even more realistic.

I think I did when he uploaded it... it's the guys pushing the car or something like that? I'm not 100% pleased with the mud on this vehicle so I may go back and work on it some more. However, here the dirt is really rocky and coarse and full of clay so I'd have to find some nice topsoil or something :) Thanks for the suggestion, though!
