Its like he's borrowed it to admire it and show the world its worth, but he knows he has to give it back, so he's carefully presenting it, but then polishing it up to return it to its owner in a better state than it was given to him.

I've never heard anyone have the hesitation that Mazzy had, almost like the lyrics were being pulled from her. But he comes closer than others who can't help from using drive in their performances no matter how hard they try.

Sorry to disagree with you. Before he had some grit, maybe anger, something challenging. Something different few singers have. Joe Cocker had it all his life. Few others. Now he's just beginning to sound like a dozen other good, smooth singers, but not outstanding.Where's the voice in 'Iron Sky' gone?

But that smoother sound I think is much more listenable than his voice of old. Just a question of taste I guess. But respect your point of view nonetheless.

@@paultempany2053 I respectfully disagree. I think he’s always had the quality of a smooth voice, songs like ‘Autumn’ and ‘Someone like you’ are proof of this. He also has the ability to sing in his renowned distorted voice - iron sky, no other way etc… I feel like he’s lost a little bit of that raw edge, but in his new album you still hear classic Paolo on the ballads like Everywhere - albeit sounding slightly less powerful and raw

I prefer non-ballads (don't need to define, but soul x rock!) and there he really stand out especially with brass. Also, you're right about it being personal, but also mood and time. A difficult song to cover in the haunting, desillusioned and nostalgic original interpretation. You can really see how Nutini tries to pay respects to the song and its legacy, he controls every sound he sings. A really good rendition, to which I come back sometimes. Maybe he'll play it in one of his concerts someday.

Similar chords with a different timing... and also First Cut Is The Deepest fits that chord sequence... so it's all about finding that different lilt, delivery, melody, etc which Paulo does so well here. Great band with him as well. Still not sure of the song, though, as it doesn't build or change making it a bit bland to me, but love what he has done to try to make it work.
