Papa Jones was a huge influence on many a drummer of today. Steve Gadd has spoken about watching him play, when Gadd was growing up in Rochester, NY.

I watched this on another channel just this last week, now this! I wish his hands were shown near the end of his solo instead of his face, as he was doing some great stuff that deserves to be seen. It's so refreshing to see such musicianship in a drummer.

this is a real drum solo: musical, melodic, ideas developed, not just straining and making those faces, and hitting everything as hard and fast as possible. Oh, he can do that, too. But ideas and smooooothness are more important, but he's not even thinking like that, just playing. A true master and the biggest influence because he influenced the other greats, like Max Roach, Art Blakey, Roy Haynes and Tony Williams, among others.

GREAT solo. Can't really listen to it here because your voice is a distraction and is most of the time louder than the drum solo. Also, with all the other chatter and phones ringing it sounds like you're in a call center.

Papa Jo Jones is one of my favorite of many examples of why Buddy Rich is ideologically overrated. Joe Morello, Billy Cobham, and Bill Bruford are a few others out of many more I could name.

What? No examples of a better solo? Disappointing...

OK - what are the drummers of the world and across jazz history missing that you've spotted? Its fine to be objective and not bow to clay idols. But - I'd love to hear more about your critique. We know you have the gumption to tell us that Papa Jo Jones did not play a very good solo at all, and you regret having to tell us this. please.....you've begun the lesson, teach us naive kids how we've misjudged his art. Please give us more!!!!! I mean, if we're forced to give up our illusions about one of the most influential and revered drum artists of history, please compensate us with some wisdom! Aaaahh, forget it....we're probably not sophisticated enough to understand your perceptions, your unimaginable standards. True, it must not be a very good solo at all, the rest of us only THINK we know something about drumming, about music.....heck, we're only drummers, we need to get real and defer to the insights of ....ummm...Snoogleheimer. (But really, whisper it.....telll me why its not a very good drum solo. I want to just try to understand what you're hearing. )
