It seems to me that Jake's illness was such a big part of his life growing up that it eventually became a core part of his personality, and I'm not sure he's entirely aware of it. I have a similar issue, but for me, it revolves around my intelligence. I was a gifted kid in school, and for whatever reason (probably something to do with the dynamic of my friend group), my intelligence became a fundamental part of who I am. I constantly feel the need to prove myself, to make sure that people know I'm smart. I think Jake is doing something similar whenever he feels the need to "prove" that he's actually sick, and why he's constantly talking about his chronic illness. Unless he's able to become self-aware of this behavior, I'm not sure it'll stop.

I have an idiopathic neurological disorder called idiopathic hypersomnia, which is the reverse of insomnia basically, considering it’s idiopathic and some can easily see me as faking it, pro tip: just don’t tell anyone. I think the reson people are saying chronic lyme isn't real is because their is a lot of confusion in weather it can be classified as a specific kind of illness. If anyone knows any doctors doing better discussions on it, it'd love to see it, but I remember scientists talking about that at some point. It basically just ruins your body in a way that creates issues long term, but without their being a true "illness" or specific cause, like say, arthritis. it can cause it, though. It's like "long covid" or fungal issues, where it just messes eveything up, even once it's "cured". You have issues for along time after it, related to when you had covid, but technically speaking you don't "have" covid anymore. There's still people with issues related to covid's initial blow up, too. There was a kid in my store who had brain damaged from lack of proper oxygen from covid related issues!

There’s been a MULTITUDE of cases in my life, especially school, where I’ve messed up - and it WAS due to my disabilities, but I REFUSED to pass it off: my health is my responsibility, doesn’t matter I was born with these issues. If anything, that’s all the more reason why I should’ve learned to accommodate my symptoms into my daily life. Yeah, all of that would be easier done if access to healthcare was better. That is a factor, and anyone denying that this IS one is either blessed with good health (and honestly, if that’s the case, I’m happy for you - but PLEASE listen to those less lucky than you!) or are straight up lying. BUT, we’re ALL responsible for ourselves, at the end of the day. EVERY individual on this planet is going through their own battles, so why on Earth would I trouble someone else, someone I inconvenienced, at that, with MY struggles to excuse my mistakes? Just own up to screwing up and move on! Promise, folks will have INFINITELY more respect and understanding with you if you do. It shows others respect.

I was born with a condition. I spent most of the first fifteen years of my life in hospital. It effects me to this day. It has stopped me doing things I don't want to do, but it also stopped me doing things I want to do. One of the things I was taught by my parents, is never to play on it. He hasn't learnt that. Going on about your condition no matter how real it is, how life-threatening and limiting, just to get away with something makes you look pathetic.

Chronic lyme isn't isn't real asa per the CDC. Symptoms AFTER treatment of lyme can occur but that's not lyme. It's like scarlet fever and strep throat. We don't say "chronic strep" that would be wrong. It's scarlet fever because the disease isn't being caused by the strep at that point. Also lyme ISNT a parasite. The fact he doesn't know that Also tells me he's faking. It's caused by a spirochete bacteria B. burgdorferi.

I’m a big into advocating for folks with disabilities. One girl I’m familiar with on Twitter is DEFINITELY sick, but refers to it as “chronic Lyme”. With your expertise, what would you suggest folks with chronic conditions actually have, if they’re truly sick, but falsely chalk it up to chronic Lyme? Can totally believe you in Jake’s case. The smiling at the hospital IS incredibly strange. The VAST majority of disabled people I speak with (including myself) DREAD the hospital, often times would rather d!e than go to one, because of medical trauma brought on by hurtful, dismissive, and/or neglectful healthcare “professionals”. We ALL have a horror story of a terrible doctor who gaslit, belittled, and/or ridiculed us. (See: doctors not believing their patients with chronic pain who have been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia referring to the disease they’re too callous and indignant to understand as “Fibro my @ss”. Yes, these comments exist. A nurse blew the whistle that THAT is how doctors WILL refer to their patients if it’s too complicated a case for their minds to wrap around. Too many doctors in the U.S have a god-complex today, where, if they can’t figure out what’s wrong with you, you’re just lying. No interest or curiosity to genuinely help suffering patients.)

"smiling in the hospital" is a weird thing to hinge on when there's so many variables as to why someone might smile in the hospital, let alone during a picture. i'm chronically ill with disabilities too, i'm black and AFAB, the demographic most likely to face harm due to medical gaslighting, and i've been through it all, as have most chronically ill people, as you have mentioned. i have fun when admitted to medical hospitals, to be honest. i live a very, very isolated life, so getting to talk to doctors, nurses, CNAs, anyone who comes by regularly gives me a lot of the socialization i don't get to have. when i received my degree, i was in the hospital preparing for surgery to repair a broken ankle and recovering from pneumonia all at the same time. i took a picture with my diploma, absolutely beaming. hell, when EMS was scooping me off my floor after breaking my ankle when i passed out because i didn't know i was walking around with severe pneumonia, i was cracking jokes at them. to speak purely for myself, i wouldn't want someone to try to discount my disability for those reasons.
