Alfred Brendel, piano
By the late 1780s, Haydn's works for keyboard were clearly intended for the piano as opposed to the harpsichord. His exploitation of the dynamic potential of the relatively new piano grows with each of his last sonatas.
Until Beethoven's middle-period sonatas, Classical-era works for solo keyboard were very often written for a composer's students and were intended to stress certain aspects of technique. At the time, the concerto was the vehicle for the performing virtuoso. Haydn was never a keyboard virtuoso, but had a number of students for whom he composed piano sonatas. The wide range of ability among his students accounts for the disparate levels of sophistication and technical difficulty we find among the surviving sonatas, most of which were written before 1770. Some of these works have been lost because Haydn gave the manuscripts to his students without making copies. A few of Haydn's sonatas, however, were not composed for his students.
The Sonata in E flat major, H. 16:49, was composed for Marianne von Genzinger, the wife of the Esterházy family physician. Haydn's relationship with Genzinger may have grown from a mutual affinity for things musical, but it seems certain from some the composer's letters that the relationship grew into some version of love. However, most of the composer's communications to Genzinger, although in a more relaxed style than those to others, are discreet, often discussing musical issues. Concerning the E flat sonata, Haydn referred to the second movement, an Adagio, as "quite new...it contains many things I shall analyze for Your Grace when the time comes; it is rather difficult but full of feeling."
The E flat major sonata is also a fairly late work, completed in 1790. It shares a certain intimate style with other works directed toward Genzinger, but is quite Beethovenian in some respects. (In general, Haydn's late keyboard sonatas are among his most forward-looking works, and perhaps those in which his influence upon Beethoven is most visible.) The first movement, in sonata form, is marked Allegro non troppo and moves forward quickly in a bouncing triple meter. Compared to those of the symphonies Haydn composed during this same period, the transition between key areas is brief. We hear a plethora of material on the secondary key, B flat major, most of which shows up in the extensive development. In the recapitulation, the transition, as usual, resolves the secondary material to the tonic. A coda develops transitional material on its way to a firm close-a procedure Beethoven would borrow from Haydn and expand upon.
The exquisite Adagio cantabile is an ABA structure in B flat major with highly decorated thematic material. Touches of the tonic minor add a melancholic feel to the movement, while numerous runs suggest that Genzinger had a formidable technique.
Haydn composed a large Minuet with two Trio sections as the finale of the E flat major sonata. Everything begins conventionally enough: the Minuet follows the traditional pattern of repetition, with the first part consisting of an eight-measure phrase that closes on the dominant. The first Trio opens with a theme built of descending scales, which contrast with the rising figures of the second part. After the Trio we hear a literal return to the Minuet, as we expect, but only the first part appears and it turns out to be a bridge to the second Trio, in E flat minor. This in turn is followed by a slightly varied reprise of the entire first Minuet section in E flat major.

Haydn is clearly underrated as a solo piano composer, but the number of moods and changes in register is amazing. This sonata shifts from being playful to being profound with ease. It has a dance within it also. Brendel is a man who follows the score closely, a rare thing nowadays. You can learn from watching and listening to him, but what he does looks a lot easier than it is. A master!

Viscamo I suspect that almost all the ‘underrated’, and similar comments found on KZbin originate from the US. In spite of some of the greatest Haydn scholars of the past 75 years emanating from that country, the general level of knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of the composer appears to be markedly less than in Europe and elsewhere.

@@elaineblackhurst1509 Quite true. Everything you wrote. I still get puzzled looks from instrumental musicians when I casually mention all that Haydn contributed in elevating the sonata and symphony to the fore. And let's also remember that the assumption that each and every human being capable of commenting on KZbin has a built-in 100% accurate understanding baked into their DNA of all the objectively true and confirmed "ratings" of all piano composers throughout history, including the worldwide averages in any given time period or range, and the true and accurate numbers for each continent, nation, state, region, locality etc, is in point of fact an exceedingly unreliable one, and we must admit of at least some doubt in the proposition that there should be (and that there even can be) a solid mutual agreement between all observers on each commenter's attempt to put forth the true and accurate ratings that apply equally to all of us (as if such a state of affairs could ever come into being).

MusicandLiterature This sonata, astonishingly, is not as ‘late’ as some imagine; the outer movements were written in 1789, the now very well-known (post-Lestat) slow movement in early 1790, in other words, whilst Haydn was still at Eszterhaza before the death of Prince Nicholas and well before the visits to England.

@@sandramartineztraslosheros667 It’s very misleading to refer to Haydn as Beethoven’s tutor/teacher. Haydn only taught Beethoven *counterpoint* - a form of musical grammar - and the lessons lasted on-and-off just 14 months from Beethoven’s arrival in Vienna in November 1792 until Haydn’s departure for his second long trip to England in January 1794; Haydn was not teaching him the much wider aspects of free composition (though it is inconceivable that they didn’t discuss such things informally). As we all know, Beethoven claimed that he ‘…learned nothing from Haydn’, the lessons were not successful, and Beethoven refused Haydn’s request to add ‘Pupil of Haydn’ to the dedication of the Opus 2 piano sonatas dedicated to his counterpoint teacher a couple of years later.

Haydn's music (and Brendel's playing!) is noble and elegant. But not in baroque style. I think that is the unique position and charm of Haydn, also with the good sense of humor. His music is not dull - shows enough variety in harmony, development of motive, etc. We have enough reasons to love his music.

The who's better - Haydn or Mozart debate is a bit maddening since the subject is subjective - like discussing if an orange tastes better than an apple. They were both masters in their field and they are not supposed to be the same. I, for one, am in the Haydn camp, since his music speaks more to me. But to each their own.

Henrik Larsen ‘…better’ is a pointless debate; the trick is to learn to understand and appreciate the differences between between these two ‘A’ list composers, something that Mozart and Haydn did themselves at the time. Probably never in the history of music have two composers of this stature ever appreciated, respected and learnt from each other to the extent of these two.

Well, you can like either or, it's subjective, but it takes an ignorant fool to believe that mozart is not objectively superior.

Horowitz's rendition is more in the way of what I expect of Haydn, and other comment, playful, exciting. Yet Brendle makes it truly sound like Beethoven. While I play and love Haydn, I am not enough of a connoisseur of the history of this particular piece to say which, if any, is more to the intention of papa H. Mr. Brendel's discussion would seem to indicate that he truly believes the the Beethoven influence suits this particular piece. I hope someone with real expertise might comment about that here. Thanks. Jake

rsjmd The Horowitz is a fine performance - but it does not blow away Brendel; consider Brendel the reference point when comparing different versions of pianists playing Haydn sonatas. This performance is the greatest performance of a Haydn sonata I know. For Brendel, music of this period was one of his key areas of interest and expertise; for Horowitz, it was not. Brendel’s overall mastery, understanding, and interpretation of the piece and of music of the period is the greater of the two. Brendel does not make Haydn sound like Beethoven; Haydn’s piano writing style and technique evolved almost out of recognition from the late 1780’s in works like this - Brendel makes Haydn sound like late Haydn. If you compare the famous Lestat’s theme section of the slow movement with a similar rolling arpeggio section in the slow movement of Mozart’s a minor sonata (K310), you can hear how far Haydn has moved into the future and beyond Mozart, almost into the world of Schubert rather than Beethoven. There is in fact, precisely zero Beethoven influence on this work as the two did not meet until after this sonata was written, and Haydn could not have known any of Beethoven’s juvenile works; even if he had known any, he could have learnt nothing from them. What you can hear, is the beginnings of a new more modern piano writing technique which Haydn developed further in London when he came across professional pianists, playing on massive sounding Broadwood pianos, and using a new, modern keyboard technique - forget Beethoven, or anyone else, this sonata sonically defines the adjective Haydnesque. Haydn of all composers was one of the least impervious to ‘influences’ and what you can in fact hear, is Brendel performing Haydn writing keyboard music in a new and ever developing style, using more ‘modern’ keyboard technique, but in a style that remains quintessentially Haydn. It is invidious to make comparisons, but in short; when it comes to Haydn - Brendel is peerless.
