Paper cartridges for cap and ball revolvers

This is a very easy cheap way I learned two years back from Dave Berken on KZbin. I do mine using his method but vary based on not making the squishy wads and also needing vegitable wads also.

I take a 1.5 rolling paper put a ball in and hold it through the paper then put a crayon against it and roll it up like a joint , then twist the ball end and pull the crayon out and move to the next one then when they are all done drying, I measure my powder and pour it in and twist the powder end and squeeze the powder tight against the ball while twisting then dip the ball side in lube and put it in my cartridge holder

I used rendered deer fat for lube, which is pretty stiff at room temperature and have since switched to 3:1 deer fat:beeswax and use that now for wad lube and bullet lube. It is not sticky and doesn't affect the powder and the chap stick is just sticky enough to drop the ball into place while sticking the wad and ball together.

These are hair curling papers, or you can use cigarette rolling papers.

From your advice I will use a thicker form of lube I was looking into soy talo if that's what it's called it's like a soy fat I heard it works pretty well and it doesn't seep into the paper or the powder

I applaud the search for paper convenience but it seems like beauty supply perm paper would be designed NOT to burn or at least thoroughly. It must work for you.

If you cut the paper in hallf, you might could get 2 cartridges out of a single sheet.

Hey Rob, do you cut off the twisted top of the paper cartridge before you put them into your gun, or does your ramrod just push the entire paper cartridge into the cylinder?

I cut the twisted top shorter, but when you ram it home the entire top comes off and you can pull it after seating or leave it. You can pinch is and pull most of it when seating it, but it seems like a lot of extra work for what would just get pushed out the barrel with the ball.

A little more than 7/16" is 15/32"... 11/32" is way smaller (1/32 larger than 5/16")

Well, it seems to load and squish under the loading ram and go bang still fine. So I think it is fine.

No prob.. I just used your method to make a few about 30 minutes ago, haven't fired them yet. The end papers seem like they'll do great , nice and cheap and durable. Fast method, no dicking around cutting out round pieces of.paper for the ends, I love it. I was just mentioning your number was off a little. You said the taper on the dowel was down to "7/16, or a little more 11/32", but I think I just misunderstood you.. by a little more, you meant smaller. So, in retrospect, I was wrong lol. Anyways, thank you sir for taking the time to make the video and share with all of us, I'll report back tomorrow or Thursday with results. 👍

@@IrrationalBstrd my reloading micrometer reads .356 to .362 on mine as it is just slightly oval from being hand made. So mine is just a smidge over 11/32"

I've been trying similar methods and I it seems is that the lube is getting on the paper eventually but it doesn't seem to affect the powder pellets that I can see so far I tried to wrap the wad in cooking paper or some type of paper you use to cook with I tested it and it has a high burn rate so I know that it'll work well but what I was trying to do was make it so the lube doesn't eventually seep into the paper do you have this problem or no

No, my lube is pretty stiff at 50/50 rendered deer fat and beeswax. Recovered wads look just dented and not even burned.

Do you have to bite off the ends before loading the cartridges?

You can just leave them on and the ram destroys the entire top when sizing the ball. They fall off and pull off the couple that do not.

The curling paper are pre-cut and are listed in the description. Available on Amazon or your local beauty supply store. I cut the twist top off with scissors.

You can buy Black powder guns online, IF you can find a store that has them in stock right now. Caps and powder are better to buy locally because of the hazmat fees. I got mine from Cabelas.

Cabelas is a good store they have most everything you need. Also you can order from Dixie Gun Works in Tennessee. No background check . Delivered directly to you . Read and order one with a steel frame. You can use heavier loads , or even order a cartridge conversion cylinder and shoot modern bullets. A lot of videos on KZbin on how to load and shoot

I dont understand the point of making paper cartridges. It takes more time and effort to make the cartridges and load them into the gun than it takes to simply load the powder and balls directly into the gun. Make that make sense.

Where can I get the dowel, I would guess for .44 caliber it’s a 7/16”or 1/2” dowel. I’m thinking I could just taper it myself with some sandpaper. Thx for the video

Taper with a knife and sandpaper, if that is all you have. I used my belt sander. 1/2" dowel
