My little Cricut cutter arrived yesterday with a replacement blade and scoring blade from Amazon for about $20. I had been using a hand me down clunky cutter that never produced a sharp cut. The Cricut cutter changed my new card making mission. Thank you for recommending this inexpensive little number. I’m smiling from ear to ear.

I bought the fiskars precision cutter (that's the large orange one) a little over a year ago. I use it for everything. It is by far my favorite trimmer I can use it for heavy duty and lightweight material. I can even cut tracing paper with it. The drag is there because it is a self-sharpening cutter. Which means I never have to buy a blade for it. It's pretty much the only one I use. And I paid about $75 for it, on sale. I also have back issues and this has been the only cutter that I could use that doesn't cause more problems with my back. I think you might like it more the longer you have it.

Terrific review! When beginning my journal-making adventure over two years ago, I was torn between a Dahle pro-grade cutter, the green Cutterbee (mainly because of the light and my aged, fading eyesight), and the big Fiskars Precision cutter. I settled on the Fiskars Precision because it folded to take up less space while not in use, and I had a coupon for 40% Off. I wound up getting mine for $28 because it was mis-marked on the shelf, and I couldn't be happier. Knowing what I know now and what a great cutter it is, if I had to do it all over again, I would not hesitate to pay full price. The drag on the stabilizer bar happens when dust and paper fibers accumulate. It's easily addressed by wiping with a dry cloth, and applying a couple of drops of fresh machine oil on the bar for lubrication. It is a precision machine, after all.

Whether I would buy right away full price to replace is always a great test on how much I like supplies. I agree, we got a good one! 😀💙💙💙

Nice view! Try cleaning the bars of the fiskars then add a few drops of mineral oil (cutting board oil). Mineral oil is very light, easy to clean and does not become sticky like machine oil will.

I have an older Fiskars rotary cutter. My main issue with it is that it never seems to cut straight. Also, I can't see the cutter bar track because of the housing for the rotary blade and the "arm" that holds it. So that if I have to cut the edges off a photograph, say, I can't see exactly where the blade is going to run. I'm a casual user--I don't do a lot of cards, but I do junk journals and some scrapbooking projects. I'm considering the big Fiskars--it looks very easy to use! Thanks for the thorough review.

I wonder if there was something wrong with your procision?? That seems weird. I do know that Fiskars warranties things. I thought I would love the Cutterpillar and every once in while I do miss it’s precision. That thing cuts SO precisely you can take a hair off. I was just too hard on it AND I didn’t love the height of it combined with the arm extension. Make any sense? IF I ever try a Cutterpillar again I would lean toward the Pro, not the Crop. I’m still in love with my fiskars procision though! I made 4 journal covers tonight and a ton of journal pages…it just keeps going. 😁 Good luck in your search. 😁💙💙💙

I own the Cutterpillar, the Fiskars Procision, Tonic Guillotine 6 inch, the fiskars rotary and 2 of the simple fiskars cutters and a WRMK guilliontine. I’ve been on the hunt for the perfect trimmer for over 20 years. There is no perfect trimmer. The Procision is great for cutting chipboard. Although Fiskars states that the blade in the Procision is never to be replaced, that’s not really correct. The chipboard is a tough material so after a while it will dull. It may take a couple of years, depends how much you’re using it of course, but the Procision will need to be replaced (you can’t change the blade). However, Fiskars will replace via warranty any trimmer, once. I’ve used their warranty more than once. A tip if you find the carriage that houses the blade too hard to pull back and forth, a drop of machine oil, sewing machine oil will work. Put it on the rails and only ONE DROP is needed. Do more and you’ll have a mess. The Cutterpillar was a impulse buy that I regret. Mine feathers. I’ve reached out to the company and was told it was user error. So I use it very little and I would never recommend it. I hate that cutting smaller piece papers you have to use a post it note or tape it to another sheet in order to be able to cut small papers. I only mentioned these two because of cost involved.

Great info!! Prices on these higher cutters are definitely not for everyone. I agree, didn’t keep my CutterPillar and wouldn’t buy another. I’ve been SCARED to put oil on cutter. 🤣 I take your ONE DROP very seriously. Thanks! 💙💙💙

I have had sooo many cutters over the years. As I would buy a new one, I’d take my old one to use in my classroom. It beat having to go upstairs to the teacher workroom and use the huge guillotine one that shredded paper! I mostly use my Stampin Up one now. It has a cutting and scoring blade and the longer arm swings out to 17 inches.

Well, funny update…hmm, not funny! I bought a new one last month so I could have two. It looks EXACTLY the same and had same name. I hate it!! It is terrible. The arm was really stiff, wouldn’t lift as far as my other one. I’ve only had it about a month and now the arm is so sloppy it falls. The arm doesn’t open all the way and now it falls down…safety hazard, doesn’t stay. So, there is clearly inconsistency in the manufacturing. 😢💙

Thank you for all this great info. I NEED HELP !!! I have the Fiskars rotary trimmer. although I like the way it cuts, (a nice clean cut) I've noticed that the rotary itself goes wonky and I couldn't seem to get a 90 degree cut. Then I noticed that it wasn't me not using it properly but the base itself is crooked..I have wasted so much paper in trying to get a nice straight cut..Now I don't have the dexterity to be able to hold onto the blade mechanism on the straight blade trimmers so now, I don't know what to get....Any advice would be greatly appreciated....thanks'...
@CraftingandRelaxing
@CraftingandRelaxing 4 ай бұрын
I've heard you can email customer service and get help/replacement if your Fiskars trimmer is crooked or has problems. I didn't do that with mine, found out later. You mentioned hand dexterity is an issue, but those fiskars rotary ones are hard for me (the kind you push down with palm and slide?). If you don't do a LOT of crafting I would do a slider blade (stampin up? fiskars? cricut?) I really love those slider/track cutters, but I just wear them out too fast so it isn't cost effective. I hope some of that helps! Like I always say, there isn't one perfect cutter for everyone so think about WHAT you cut, size, and how much and get what works for your hands. Good luck!!💙💙💙

The thing I don’t like about track cutters, including my Cricut (that I do love, BTW), is that they shift, regardless of how carefully you cut. I don’t know how to resolve that issue, and I’m sure it’s user error, but it is a HUGE problem for me. And I also own the orange large Fiskars too! Lol

The paper shifts? Regardless of what cutter I use I hold paper against the “ledge or lip” with my flat palm so it’s tight. Do yo do that? I’ll have to watch myself, but I think I do it on all cutters. Fingertips hold paper guard down tight, if there is one and palm on paper. Lol! That big orange Fiskars is pretty great, just so heavy! My first trimmer was also a Martha Stewart. I bought it because I assumed anything with her name on it would be good quality. I was wrong. I quickly moved on to a small Fiskars trimmer. I then got the 12” Fiskars. I can’t stand the gap between the arm and the base though. Neither of the Fiskars gives a perfectly straight edge - my card bases and panels are always a tad off. I recently bought a small We R guillotine trimmer because the Fiskars tears certain colors of my Paper Boutique paper rather than cutting it. I was considering a Stampin Up trimmer because that doesn’t have the gap on the arm like the Fiskars, but I’ve heard the blades dull quickly. So here I am, in search of the elusive perfect trimmer.

Love how they have both a cutting and scoring blade which you can keep on the track at the same time (just tuck one on either end and than use the other). Another great video. I’ve been curious your thoughts on the large fiskars one. I’ve been searching for the perfect cutter for a very long time too. I think I may have found it. But not sure it’s for you LOL I’m loving the new Creative Memories rotary trimmer. It’s similar to the Fiskar‘s one where you have to push a little but I don’t find where you have to push a lot. I also love that you can switch out the blades and get different decorative looks. There’s not too many videos on KZbin. Most are consultants so I felt like the videos might’ve been a little jaded LOL but there was a video by the crafting panda or something and that’s what made me take the plunge. It’s also on Amazon so if you don’t like it you can return it LOL thought I would let you know the Stampin’ Up! trimmer that you have unfortunately can no longer be purchased. I had that one too and really liked it but in the end I found that plastic bar really moved around a lot. It does appear that you are missing the strip where the blade runs through as well. It’s a removable place that you can flip around and use a front side and a back side. Keep the videos coming ❤️

What about We R Memory Keepers? I bought their 'The Works' that has a trac cutter. I haven't even used it yet but wondering how well it works compared to others and with my Psoriatic Arthritis that is truly affecting fingers, hands & wrists. Maybe I'll need to go to a guillotine style. If so I've already decided on the Fiskars as I'm very interested in several projects that take at least medium chipboard. So...for my hands/wrists is mine okay or a different one would be better or should I just go to a guillotine style? If so which guillotine would be better for lighter & smaller papers?
@CraftingandRelaxing
@CraftingandRelaxing 3 жыл бұрын
I haven't used The Works, but it looks really cool and it might be easy on your hands! So many tools in one! I did buy a paper trimmer from them long before this video and I returned it to Joann the same night! I did NOT like it and it folded in half right around the 5 1/2 inch mark which is a hot mess for a card maker. It was TERRIBLE! The Works has a base that looks solid and goes 6 inches. Guillotine vs trac is going to be personal preference for your hand troubles. The trac cutters don't take much strength, but can be small/tricky to grab...but guillotines take a bit more strength. I would NOT recommend those kind where you push down on the big rolling blade for you (like the Fiskars near the left in this lineup). The Fiskars that I love is heavier to move the cutter for the hands too so it probably wouldn't be great for you. Good luck! It's all personal preference! You didn't mention what size projects you do? The smaller cutter you get it might be easier on your hands. I have only tried the guillotines in this video so I don't know many of the 12x12 ones out there.

@@CraftingandRelaxingI'm getting into Junk Journaling but I also want to do Cartonnage. I'm really intrigued with the Scrap Queen Sherlock Holmes Secret Storage Unit. So I will be using medium to heavy chipboard. I may have to have my husband (or neighbor son & his family) do the actual cutting of the heavy stuff and I'll stick to cutting paper and cardstock. I keep very busy with continuing my hobbies of piano, sewing (clothes & crafts), quilting, hand embroidery and most favorite craft counted cross-stitch. On my bad days I continue with my genealogy research. Been at that since I was 7 years old and spending Sunday afternoons with my great-grandmother listening to stories about her drawer full of photos. Didn't even know there was such a thing when I started writing down the names, who they were related to and the stories. My favorite was about my grandmother and her siblings, along with other children in the tent city having a funeral for a dead mean rooster. Just found this great video ! Currently using the Fiskars guillotine that someone else linked you to. It has worked great but I've used it so much I rubbed the measuring guides off ! 😏 So now I'm in the market again 😝 Considering the longer Tim Holtz. BUT while researching I noticed in their photos that the rulers don't line up. The middle ruler lines up with the grooves on the base. But if you follow the grooves up, they don't line up with the top ruler. A lot of the reviews mention this as well. Does yours line up 🤔
@CraftingandRelaxing
@CraftingandRelaxing 3 жыл бұрын
The longer Tim Holtz one is the one with the “sloppy” arm. I was a loan so I don’t have it handy. Maybe some of them have tight arm. I will agree that the rulers on Tim cutters could be better. The 1/8 and one 1/16 notches don’t touch paper guide on my smaller cutter. Idk why they pushed those markings up toward centimeters...no markings near the paper. 😂 It works, but I would ask them to change ruler on next round. Ruler does line up on my small one.

Ah, the search for a great cutter! Thanks for this video! My first paper trimmer was a EK Success Cutterpede rotary which drove me up the wall because it WOULD NOT cut straight 😑 I couldn’t figure out of it was the track, the mat under the blade, user error or some unknown reason. I bought the Tonic guillotine (identical to your long Tim Holtz trimmer, but orange) and the blade is a bit blunt in the middle. I’m considering either a Cutterpillar Crop or the big Fiskars ProCision 🤔 Do you find the non-rotary slide/track trimmers cut ok once the blade is duller? In my mind a duller blade would damage the paper/cardstock vs a rotary blade that would just keep turning. Does that make sense?
@CraftingandRelaxing
@CraftingandRelaxing 4 жыл бұрын
When the slider trimmers get dull the paper edge looks rougher. Then, you know you need a new blade for sure. 😄 Since I’ve tried the green one and the big fiskars one I would say it depends on what you like doing. The green one is better for PRECISION and lighter papers any the light is nice. The orange one doesn’t even blink at super thick card stock or chip board. TFW! 💙💙💙

Cereal boxes and food boxes are thicker than some heavy card stock. They may be hard on the cutter. I’m assuming you have the one that cuts 12” long so it’s pretty tough.
