Artwork was fantastic! I don't know how Grace disposes of her blades but I always put a bit of blue tape on the edges. Keeps them from slicing through the trash bags and possibly slicing some trash guy's hand.

I understand the reason in using many blades is because the tips break off in the mat which leads to losing the crisp cuts and tearing more easily. Grace is an awesome papercuterr and these are the best tutorials I have seen on the subject. Thanks Grace Hart and Strathmore!

Janet, Hi. I liked your comment. I began doing paper cutting and actual Scherenschnitte in 1981. Working with specialty scissors is very hard on the hands and wrists and can lead to Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Not fun. So, many of us began to use Exacto knives, even though purists don't consider them the same art. However, if our ancestors had exacto knives they would have used them. They were creative and very practical people at the same time. Otherwise they would have thrown odd bits of paper away instead of turning them into a beautiful art form. Right! There are new blades on the market that may help with this. They are the Exacto brand "Z" blade, exceptionally sharpe and exact. I just bought some at Walmart in the craft department and plan on using them tonight. You are right, Grace does a lovely job. Her pieces are beautiful. But, the reason we use so many blades is that they become dull quickly and tend to skip or rip your paper. This can be disastrous particularly when you are doing highly intricate and detailed areas. But I really like what Grace said about mistakes and I completely agree with her. This is a highly focused meditative art form. It should be fun and relaxing. If you make a mistake in an original creation, make it a part of your design concept. Happy sculpting your world in paper cutting!

You can cut the number of blades you use by y rubbing the back of the blade on an oil or whetstone which reinstates the point which is the part of the blade that is blunted by constant use on paper. I learned the trick from a chap that cut out veneer for marquetry pictures.

Seems expensive to replace all those blades but when you think of any decent art process, it's expensive. This one just uses inexpensive paper and pencils and a lot of blades.

how do we know when to change the blade?
@nightowl41216 жыл бұрын
I wonder if you use glass instead of a mat, will it helps to prevent the blade from breaking and than having to change the blade regularly?
@Lonelyeco6 жыл бұрын
Perhaps but I know it leave you prone to breaking of parts of paper you've cut. I did it once and it made it harder to cut your design without breaking the design. 😔

Grace, Lovely, lovely pieces and well demoed. I just found what to me is a new kind of #11 blade. It is Exacto brand, "Z" blades. They are said to be exceptionally sharp and fine pointed.

Grace is a gentle instructor , but fails to suggest that when cutting, you can move the Papercut so that you are always essentially cutting towards you and not bending your hand uncomfortably. Tape the paper to the cutting board and move the board so that your wrist doesn't bend. You will have better control of the knife. Enjoy !!!!!!

thank you! homeless and starting to explore the art of paper-cutting. xerox with black background onto color card-stock? then, staple to clean/blank telephone poles? for holidays only? remove after 1-2 weeks and be sure to leave NO old staples on the poles. i add a message or story behind each flyer, (sometimes include $1 for the idle homeless to seek out?).
