Fun fact; in the early days of film, film could not be copywritten as the rule was anything copywritten had to be on paper. What studios did was printed actual motion images onto paper that effectively worked much like the paper film in this device. This paper film has been an good source for many transfers of media otherwise lost due to film degradation, fires, etc.

But it is not a translucent material, what makes it interesting. The bulb is inside so the film is reflecting the light so it goes through the lens.
