What's clever about the Koopalings is that the colour of their wand matches the colour of the Paint Star they're guarding/chasing down. And they didn't purposely change the colour of their wands just for this game either. In New Super Mario Bros. Wii their wand colours are the same there as well!

I love the koopalings and all, but I was a bit disappointed of them being the "main" boss of each area, I was hoping to see some creativity especially with the art design, but nonetheless I still loved this same Favourite koopaling boss battles ( favourite to least favourite 1, Lemmy ( Loved the theme song, and Lemmy's attitude as well, being the trickster/playful one out of all the Koopalings, out of all of them he's the one I had the hardest with) 2. Larry ( just love his cool guy gangster attitude, especialy that moment when he passes you on the train, although wish they could've added more to the battle 3. Ludwig(loved the battle concept,although I wished when his sub blew up he wouldn't be near death,also liked his king of bratty attitude,and how he appears to be OK with losing 4. Iggy (loved the battle music and the concept, also love his psychopathic/ crazy attitude) 5. Roy ( like how he takes your paint to change it up a bit, his desing, and his attitude, other than that nothing else spoke to me 6. Wendy(meh) 7. Morton (disappointed with the battle and how they made him look stupid

Boss battle music from favorite to least favorite: 1) Ludwig (the very beginning part at 9:49 is INCREDIBLE and highly underrated) 2) Lemmy (TOO GOOD. The beginning part here is the best part of this song too. Goes so well with the circus theme but also is just a blast to listen to). 3) Larry (sounds SUPER Cupheady, especially with the train in the background for some reason. Idk, it just sets the tone really well and it's tons of fun.) 4) Roy (This one is all around awesome. Has a bit of almost every style of music.) 5) Morton (Great melody here.) 6) Iggy (Nothing special about this one, but still, all the Koopaling boss battle music is great.) 7) Wendy (For some reason I'm actually not a huge fan of this one. Obviously it's supposed to keep consistent with the music in the rest of the Purple portion of the game (especially with all the "ho"s, but idk, it kinda stands out but not in a good way. Her rhythm attack that goes with the music makes the song a bit better though.) Also, I know it doesn't count, but if I could, I'd put the Koopaling intro jingle (the one that lasts like 3 seconds when each Koopaling is introduced) at the VERY TOP. It is absolutely INCREDIBLE and it's a shame it's only a small jingle lol. I just love the tone that it sets and it really fits the Koopalings for some reason, it's so hard to explain. Anyway, now on to the bosses THEMSELVES from favorite to least favorite. 1) Lemmy (I just can't. The atmosphere in this is TOO GOOD. That's all I have to say. I was debating between this one and Larry, but I think this is slightly better. The great music adds a lot to it, too.) 2) Larry (obviously fighting on trains is not a novel idea because it's been in plenty tv shows and movies lol, but idk this just has a great atmosphere and I love Larry's behavior the whole time, especially with that pose he does. Like obviously that pose adds humor but I genuinely think it also sets the mood for the fight, it's kind of hard to explain. Also the story behind him being the VIP guest and then hijacking the train is awesome lol) 3/4) Morton/Roy (Can't really pick between these two. They're both awesome in their own way. Honestly all the Koopaling bosses in this game are great - even the lower placing ones - except for the fact that ALL of their health is all WAY too low and all you need is the right Thing card in order to take them out in basically one hit. But I digress. I love the way Morton speaks, and honestly if the bossfight came later it wouldn't be that impressive, but I think it's perfect as the first boss fight and it really sets the stage for the rest of the game. And Roy is super creative and serves as a GREAT penultimate boss, and I love how his Bullet Blaster from Mario U returns but this time it serves a different purpose, being a paint cannon. Awesome.) 5) Wendy (The rhythm aspect of this is awesome and that instantly jumps it up several places.) 6) Ludwig (I laughed out loud when they showed the ship was only half-finished. Hilarious. I love the way Ludwig appears inside the ship and then inside the other ship. This is just a quirky boss fight and I love it. Its setting, Fort Cobalt, is also the perfect place for it to occur.) 7) Iggy (Nothing about this one really stood out. It's not bad but nothing about it amazed me and I think they could've done a lot more with Iggy's personality. I expected him to be one of the most animated Koopalings considering how "crazy" he acts but that didn't really happen. Of course the coliseum thing is kind of cool I guess? Just your typical boss fight, I'd say.)

It also could use some more character diversity, and a bit more expansion on the story. But the battle system was what killed it for me. It's a nice game to look at, and it's well written, but it falls flat in most other areas.

Can the Koopalings dodge every Thing Card that isn't the one you're supposed to use to beat them? For exemple, with the exception of the Cork, will Larry avoid every Thing Card? Tbh, all the Koopaling Bosses could work as bosses in a normal Mario Game. Here are ideas for their fights: Morton: MORTON FIGHT SIMILAR TO MARIO BROS U. MORTON HAS HAMMER WHICH MORTON USES TO SMACK BAD MARIO, LATER MORTON LIGHTS HAMMER ON FIRE AND USES IT AS WEAPON IN FINAL PHASE! Iggy: Iggy’s fight takes place on two moving chariots, one for you and one for Iggy. Iggy will throw Bombs at you from his chariot and you need to deflect these bombs back by spin jumping, after that then stomp on his head, after the second stomp, he will get off his chariot and turn his own wand into a sword and shield, and continue the fight in a gladiator arena, where he will try to stab you with his sword and block your stomps with his shield. Along with that, chain chomps will come out of the audience which will try to attack you, and you need to spin jump next to these chain chomps to send them at Iggy, which will allow you to stomp on him again and end the fight. Wendy: Wendy’s Fight is similar to a normal Wendy fight in the first two phases, just the rings are larger. But in the final phase Wendy will grab a ton of coins and use them in place of her rings, and the coins are really hard to dodge. Larry: Larry’s Fight takes place on a moving Train, where it will function like a normal Larry fight with the exception of sometimes random enemies popping up from carriages, but in the final phase Larry will use the steam pipe to shoot out smoke at you, which will damage you and reverse your controls, however you can block this smoke using Yoshi, which is given to you before the fight. After three hits the VIP goes down. Lemmy: Now Lemmy certainly hasn’t been the best in fights, but this might be his best. Lemmy’s Ball will become his little Wonder Ball, which he makes roll at high speeds when hit instead of hopping into his shell. Also Lemmy’s Bouncy Balls he shoots will now become Bouncy Spike Balls. After three hits the magic show’s done. Roy: Roy’s fight is pretty unique. He will use a cannon to shoot out the main element of the world he resides in, like sand for desert, water for ocean, snow for ice, poison for jungle, and Molten Rock for mountain. He will shoot these out while also digging underground and popping up in random locations, like the ground, ceiling and walls. Ludwig: Ludwig’s Battle is probably the most original and complex. You will need to pilot a Clown Car to battle him in the first and second phases. His first phase is him piloting the level itself which however has to be an airship, which is brought to life by either him or Kamek. In the first phase his ship will unleash massive fleets of enemies which will attack you, but you need to use cannons shot out of your clown car to hit him, and then hop on the Airship itself to stomp on his head. In the second phase he will then pilot a small aircraft, which will shoot projectiles you need to avoid, and then after using a cannon to incapacitate him, you stomp on his head again. In the Final Phase, you and Ludwig are falling from the sky, and need to combat Ludwig by avoiding attacks until you reach the bottom, which will then be a normal fight with only one hit left until you win.
