When I was a kid and played Super Paper Mario I was surprised at first, it was very different, but still pretty good, a new world, interesting lore, expanding the mario universe, lots of interactions, it was fun (Just the Chapter 3 Francis castle was amazingly fun) But when I played Sticker star...I didnt have fun, I 100% 3 times but I never felt joy or the “WHOHOO I DID IT” moment 1-The firts playtrough, I had to look at a guide for 2 items so I could proceed 2-The fast run where I already knew where all was 3-Beating all bosses without item stickers (The crown will always complain that I didnt need to waste all those stickers instead of congratulating me) (Btw the museum completion reward doesnt even have all the music)

@@byronbarrientos8471 Yeah it was deffo controversial. At the time, people took issue with how a lot of the puzzles were cryptic and some of the things the game made you do just weren't fun. Like those parts where you'd run on a treadmill for ages or just hold right in an empty white world. Looking at this game, it's as if Nintendo knows fans love Thousand Year Door and want it back but doesn't understand why, so they're taking individual elements of the game (the audience for battles, partners, badges, Peach being possessed by a horrible ancient evil, etc.) and putting them in haphazardly. The end result may still very well be a good game, but I wish they'd also port the original N64 game and TTYD to Switch, both to appease the fans of those games and to give new fans a chance to see why we old folks keep yammering about them.

Yeah, it seems like they're trying to mash elements of TTYD with the CS formula, without understanding what made those elements work, Partners were cool because they added much more strategy to the battles and had interesting designs and personalities, here, You can't control them, they aren't always with you and they do have interesting personalities, but not original designs. Badges were cool because they were a way of customizing your play style, Here, it seems like it might just be a "This is the best one" and move on (Plus there are very few of them) The reason Peach being possessed was so impactful, was because it was a SURPRISE AT THE END OF THE GAME, here, it's literally the first thing shown in the trailer.

@@slenderfoxx3797 I don't know where you peeps get this idea of "it's now an action adventure yar yar", but there are rpgs out there with no leveling system, as well as games like Mana Khemia where they're RPGs where you actually have to avoid a lot of combat because it wastes your limited time. It doesn't matter which game you're playing, ss, cs and def the new origami king, but from start to finish, your character will grow, that already makes this an rpg. Not only that, an action adventure requires, you know, action. TOK has a *battle system*, a *puzzle based battle system* where you solve a puzzle to finish the battle faster and earn better rewards. If you don't think a *puzzle based battle system* is an RPG system, then you might want to learn about this very underrated and uknown rpg (satire included) called Persona 3-5, where instead of lining up enemies, you use the right elemental magic against every enemy in the battle so you can kill it in 1 turn for 90% of the game.

Its just like music or any form of art, they don't have to make a game the way you want it, musicians don't have to make an album the way you want it, artists in general have always done things in their own vision, not the peoples vision. If you don't like it, don't buy it, it's not a difficult concept to grasp, if you look at all the art throughout history, it was done in their own vision, Van Gough, Leonardo, etc, did things the way they wanted.

The battle system seems to be a step in the right direction as many people are saying the battles themselves are fun, however their is no incentive to battle which feels like a step back. At least Colour splash gave you an incentive.

The fights still give you an incentive to fight, because you get more confetti during fights than you do in the overworld. There's a bare minimum of confetti in the overworld because fighting enemies gives a shit ton of confetti, and since you run out of confetti pretty quickly, I imagine most people will find it quicker to fight enemies than to farm confetti by just hammering the flowers which would give you small amounts.

Buzzy Trombone but the only purpose for the confetti is to fill in holes in the map (most of which you can just walk around) and they will only yield coins if you fill them in. The coins then will be spent on weapons and accessories which you will use in battle which creates a pointless cycle. If I don’t fight then I don’t need coins to get weapons until I get to a boss and if it’s anything like colour splash coins are plentiful without battle.

FieryGarfield you haven’t played the game. You cannot answer these questions. I think I can be a bit more accurate from what I’ve heard and seen, so: 1. Maybe, but almost all of the game will be as Mario. 2. The story mainly comes from interactions between the characters. Sticker Star had only one speaking character for most of the game, and no one liked her. Origami King has at least two speaking characters for most of the game, so there will be much more variety in the interactions and thus, the story. If you absolutely cannot handle a “something happens and now we have to deal with it” plot, then you will not like this game.

Just my two cents, but CS was at its best when it wasn't trying to be an RPG. If you evaluate CS for what it is and not what some fans want it to be, the combat was by far the worst part of that game By tacking on an unrewarding battle system, it forfeits its ability to be its own thing to the extent SPM was, and invites negative direct comparisons to the first games. Even if it's not the game some fans want, I think these new games as they stand would be better if they stuck exclusively to what they are good at. While fans have a right to say this isn't what they want, the devs are also not obligated to sacrifice the vision they're passionate about to appease a vocal apparent "fan consensus". They invite your criticism by making that call, but they are allowed to do it. And due to a lack of "I'm a late 2016 Wii U exclusive", be prepared for this to sell well and reassure the team on their direction.

Underrated comment right here. The new paper mario clearly doesn't want to be a rpg, I don't see why people are forcing it to be what they want and just kill the artistic vision of its creators. For once, I don't think that, for how hard people are defending it, that another mario rpg with the same old mechanics will be as good as TTYD. There is nothing of that game that I look at and makes me say "I'd like for them to TTYD but with x thing better" if not a TTYD with a new story. TTYD and the original Paper Mario are ALREADY very similar, a third game would only show how limiting the original design of the game is.

Before people got their hands on this game, I was fairly excited to play it [Origami King], but after hearing everything I've heard about it. . . I just don't know if I want to pick it up anymore. The atmosphere seems good, I'm sure the music is fine, writing seems to be good at worst, but the gameplay. . . I just don't understand the direction they've continued to push this series in, or more specifically, why(?). Battling for the sake of 100%'ing the game does not sound like a good incentive at all, and not having to really battle much outside of that reasoning just completely deflates me. I'm convinced now that modern Paper Mario might not just be for me, and that's probably alright. I don't think Origami King looks terrible, per se, but as someone who's looking to come into another actual RPG, particularly from a gameplay perspective, I suppose I'm just not going to get what I want at this point in time. I might end up giving this game a shot at some point in the future, but unless something convinces me to change my mind within this next week or so (maybe see some more user-impressions), it won't be anytime soon. Edit: Larger issue that I'm not going to elaborate on, but I also feel it's largely due to modern Kensuke Tanabe being a main-head in the series now. . . Not saying he hasn't done anything good in his career, but I'm not his biggest fan.

I think the biggest problem with recent PM titles is that they keep wanting to implement RPG like combat in what they themselves define as an action adventure. The whole games are based around a mechanic that no one seems to enjoy. They should just make an adventure game Imo. Or listen to the fans and go back to its roots. Toads help in battle, they give health and Clue's. The battles get progressively more complex and challenging, and the amount of enemies that surround you increases quite a bit as you progress. From what I've seen there's 2 forms of battling in the game. Coins are super important and side characters help out quite a bit. It has a little bit of everything from all the games in series, however it isn't focused very heavily on being an RPG. I'd give it an 8/10

Okay, I'm noticing another thing... I don't think The Origami King is walking in the same direction as TTYD, but I see it walking in the same direction as Super Paper Mario! That's not bad! I've played Super Paper Mario and it was good! It had a good story and Interesting gameplay The Origami King not only has both, but it has partners as well! So The Origami King is a mixture between Super Paper Mario, TTYD and Color Splash. Now that I discovered that, my hopes for the game went WAY higher!

Well I mean "technically" Super Paper Mario had partners as well, though they only really spoke once (most of the time) then shut up for the rest of the game as Mario just used them, outside Tippi. SPM has my favorite story (and music) of all Mario games, so I'll absolutely agree with that. I'd need to play this game entirely before I'd rank it though. I think I just am going to not compare this to the first 3 games, it won't make me happy if I do. The difference between Ryoto Kawade and Tensuke Tanabe (now they have 3 Paper Mario games to their name each) is like night and day for me.

The fact that Andre can finish TTYD with only flower points shows that leveling to increase health and MP is not really needed. If they have the variety in this new game in other areas to keep me interested in finish to beat the ending then I would still say it is a good game on its own without relying on existing mechanics and nostalgia. I learned intelligent system had both hands tie behind their back since sticker star it sounded like miyamoto specifically told them not to use any new and original characters and thus limiting their options and story variety since they can only use toad. But if people are ok with having multiple toads following them around I think maybe we can convince them to add old battle system back. :P

I too like both styles. My only problem is that now there is not a Mario RPG series anymore (with Alphadream in bankrupt). This means that we will just play soulless games such as Sticker Star(and probably Origami King),with a terrible story and characters. I mean, as long as they make a new RPG series for Mario I am satisfied...Origami King could still be a funny game mostly designed for kids. Still, it should cost waay less money and it shouldn't deserve to be called Paper Mario. This is why we are complaining so much

Even though this isn't a return to form like I was praying for because TTYD was my absolute fav, I think i'll still give this one a shot. Didn't try sticker star because of the bad reviews and the battle system didn't appeal to me. Colour Splash I quit after a few hours out of boredom. Even so I've decided to give this one a chance in hopes i'll actually like it instead of turning my nose at it thinking that it's not TTYD 2. Despite there not being too much incentive to battle which will probably lead me to avoiding anything unnecessary, I can't say I wasn't guilty of avoiding battles in 64 nor TTYD either when I just wanted to get from point A to Point B in the lease amount of time.

The Apples are rotten and old. RPGs have so many flaws and can break a game. in RPGs you have to level up, right? So you have two options, skip everything and be under leveled or grind and be too overpowered. Either way it would ruin the game. Look at Pokémon, the battles are pretty bland and boring, if you’re over leveled you just spam your most powerful attack. That’s it. Without exp there is no artificial difficulty. You can enjoy a fair and fun battle if you need some more coins and confetti for something. That’s how I see this.

It's like 1 guy at Nintendo said "Hey, the old fans really liked partners, so let's do that" and everyone else said "Great idea! But let's not make them permanent, only attacking every now and then. And also make them random instead of being controlled by the player. And also choose a Bob-Omb model but just in case that's too generic and people complain about using the same characters everywhere, remove the fuse so it looks different and recognizable!". At this point they shouldn't even try to make anyone happy cause they obviousy are so incredibly out of touch with their fans that they should just make the game they really wanted, even if it's much less liked. And if your comment was in the vain of "Stop whining about how it's not like the first 2 games": Yeah, but you know what's so frustrating? That they brought a little hint back of those games (badges, partners) but their implementation looks to be somewhere in between boring and straight up bad. It's like a kick in the face to be honest. If they didn't do that, I'd be like "Ok guys, the ship has sailed", but this is like kicking someone who's already on the floor.
