The battle system might be mixing in old elements with new elements. From the Japanese footage, there’s an indication of there being the base attacks that were present in the first 2 games, but then there’s the new “ring” system. From the looks of it, you line up enemies to gain an attack boost, sorta like the line jumps from the previous two games. This is an interesting game so far.

I guarantee this is just Sticker Star 3. Observe: - A new paper gimmick that overwhelms all other plot devices. - The antagonist using that gimmick against mario. - A new "partner" involving the gimmick that doesn't actually help in combat but dies in the final battle to make mario op; kersti for sticker, huey for paint, and the origami pixie thing now. - Battle mechanics that revolve around using a LIMITED AMOUNT of attacks (worn-out and shiny). - Generic mario enemies and toads as the only npcs. - Did anybody see and exp bar? The ONLY thing (that we've seen) that makes this game different than Sticker Star is that Bowser isn't the antagonist.

I can’t remember, but this video alone gives me the impression that some of the GameXplain crew haven’t played TTYD or don’t remember it well. Andre and... someone else both questioned if the battles would transport you to an audience, and even said that’s weird and couldn’t wrap their heads around it. If they played/remembered TTYD, they’d know that’s not a first, but didn’t mention it.

@@matthewbarry9603 Super Paper Mario had a 'retro world' where all the enemies were generic and even then, they threw some new creative stuff in. The other worlds mostly featured unique characters and enemies. Unfortunately, giving personality to generic characters doesn't usually make them memorable, no matter how well-written they are. I can't remember which toads had good lines in Colour Splash regardless of how good they might have been. Also the giant sea monster in the trailer being a big cheep-cheep is just terrible :/

I WANT it to be good.... so bad... but they battle system makes me raise an eyebrow and they seem to only take half steps towards what we seem to want. The battle gameplay didn't show the companions in battle from what I remember, so... I'm just keeping my expectations low to hopefully be suprised and not hurt again.

In my opinion, this ring system is a very nice change. It's still keeping the turn based battle system, but adding a bit more complexity by having the battles take place in a 3D space, allowing for a lot more enemies than before. It's also nowhere near as intrusive as say the stickers or cards. It seems to be more for when you're in a pinch and need some help.

I'm really concerned about how partners will work in this game. Different sources have referred to them as story / narrative partners, which makes it seem like they won't be in combat. The combat system also doesn't seem like it's designed for more than one character to be active. Hopefully the allies will appear as an 'item' like the boots or hammer. It also looks like the partners are generic looking enemies, there are no unique look for them. The way partners are treated is going to be the make or break for me I think.

Even though I am very disappointed that this game takes alot of heavy inspiration from Sticker Star/Color Splash, I will say I am really digging the more darker direction this game is taking in terms of its plot & theme, with certain characters like Peach, shy guys & goombas turning into these creepy, soulless-like origami creatures. Honestly it kind of reminds me of that one creepy Looney Tunes cartoon, "Invasion of the Bunny Snatchers," where certain iconic looney tune characters were transformed into creepy, soulless storyboard versions of themselves.

My theory is that we'll get one of two things in late June/early July: A pseudo E3 Direct of some sort. With it I would expect obviously more info on this game and the announcement of the rumored Mario revivals. In addition, more Nintendo game announcements potentially with very fluid release windows if any given at all. OR, just leave the other announcements for a later date such as the fall September-early November, and make a Mario Direct that will of course elaborate on this game and reveal the new Mario revivals.

the switch has been AMAZING so far. all these amazing titles, many of which have very few negative reviews and people who aren't neccessary into zelda for example, are now in love with breath of the wild. i remember people having a pretty fixed mindset as to which games they pick up, but I've noticed a lot of people trying new games and expanding their library. nintendo sure has made a great comeback.

The more I see the trailers, the more I fear that it's just another Color Splash, but with a little less tedious Battle System. We really didn't get what we wanted back, like the partner system, Mario is alone in most of the world exploring/battling aside from the opening scene. Character variety seems to be lacking again. We are back with big HP Points, no MP or FP system for stategic moves. It seems that the crowd mechanic is back, I really hope its just as good as the one in TYD, PLEASE have an EXP system. Hopefully the story is enjoyable too. I'm not going to raise up my expectations again. I'll wait reviews, but i'm not expecting much.

First, yes, we indeed got partners. Second, how did mario leveled up his HP if there is no EXP? And I can prove that because Mario increases his HP in a more inconsistent way. Like, in CS, you get more HP after you get a Max Paint Star, and it is Always 50 HP. But here, it looks like you get more HP as you battle, so it means EXP!!

1. I like Art style that one thing color splash got right 2. The story looks amazing And maybe similar color splash story but this one seems more in depth story 3. The battle system is still a mystery but it could be different than color splash or sticker star 4. It's tough for me to fully be on board with the game. On one hand, it not only looks visually really good, but they keep trying to reinstate partners are back, the battle system might have actual EXP turn based depth similar to TTYD, it might also not have expendable jumps & hammers like the last 2, there's a different, seemingly actual story w/ this Origami King & teaming up w/ Bowser and his whole army, and the settings look interesting so far. BUT, other than the main 2 new characters so far, there are no original characters or original designs, the trailer itself is still very vague to the combat & alleged partner return because we don't see them interact with the combat system at all, they could be the disposable, really short lived tag along companion type (like the handful of Shy Guys and Toads in Color Splash that travel alongside you for one small section), we don't know if those 2 new characters are the only new ones, which might be the case, we don't know how deep or simple the combat may be, and they claimed some of this would return in Color Splash, yet it didn't so they may lie again here too. Between the battles & overworld, we largely see Mario alone moving & fighting w/ little having to do with the Bob-omb, Kamek, etc. Some would also argue that it's annoying how 'Paper' continues to be a central theme surrounding the game's plot, humor, world, & gameplay (Stickers, peeling sticker mechanic, creasing, paint, origami, cards, etc.) when paper in Paper Mario has largely been a subtle aesthetic prior to Sticker Star in games w/ stories w/ high, natural stakes, making the world & characters feel very fake, unnatural & artificial. Not to mention, it's still not an actual return to form to TTYD because the battle system's still different, the partners are still generic & unoriginal, there's hardly any new characters, but the story & new system might lead to something fun & unique. Forget how much I love TTYD & 64, I'm someone that likes Super Paper Mario, so I'm open to this being a good, different type of Paper Mario, but the last two set me up for disappointment & didn't deliver on fronts they claimed to have. So, I'm hesitant to really feel like this could be great or amazing, especially when details we have are still hella vague. It can totally be great, but I'm remaining cautious on this one.

Fun to see you here smt. And I fully agree. My main gripes is the lack of original designs too. And even if there are new partners, from the looks of it they have generic designs. My biggest hopes are for references/easter eggs of the first 3 games in order to keep some sort of continuity, cause even if mario paper is one series, there is such a disconnect between spm and pmss that it no longer feels like the same universe. I would like to see old characters, especially partners, returning at least as npcs, just how like bow returns in ttyd as an npc. It helps keep the games feel as if they are in the same timeline.

Because the Sticker Star's slots are more tied to your actual fighting style. "Get the same picture for more Attack Sticker Slots" is way worse than, "If you get 3 Red Mushrooms in a row, it can heal you!" and it doesn't ultimately affect your gameplay in the slightest.

According to VGChartz, these are the sales for each game: Paper Mario 64: 1.37 million, Thousand Year Door: 1.91 million, Super Paper Mario: 4.23 million, Sticker Star: 2.46 million, and Color Splash: 0.87 million. Every game has sold over 1 million besides color splash, which is the worst selling. The best selling and worst selling entries prove that people don't care about if the game is generic enough. Color Splash's "Stick to using the Mario characters only" policy didn't encourage more Wii U owners to get it, and Super Paper Mario, the best selling, has some of the most original and weirdest designs of the series. 2. If it's Mario, it will usually sell well. Almost every major Nintendo published Mario game on switch has sold over a million (the exception being Mario and Sonic 2020), regardless of the quality or characters. Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, a turn based tactical RPG starring Mario and the Ribbids, sold 2+ million copies! If it has Mario in the title, most of the time it will sell. 3. Original and creative characters, as well as characters that first time buyers may not know about, do not deter people from buying a game. As long as the main cast of famous Nintendo characters like Mario, Luigi, Bowser, Peach, etc. are there, and the game looks fun, people will want to play it. If people don't buy a game because of characters that they are unfamiliar with, you might as well take Olivia and the Origami King off the box art. The first three Paper Mario games sold over a million despite having original characters, and they even included original characters on the game case! With this logic, Super Paper Mario shouldn't have sold well because it had too many original characters, and had some of them featured on the cover of the game. Look at Smash Bros Ultimate, the game that sold 18.84 million copies! I find it hard to believe that there is a large majority of people out there that didn't buy the game because they were unfamiliar with every character or franchise that was included. I highly doubt a lot of people said, "I was going to buy SSBU (for myself/for my child), but I won't. Why? Because I don't know half of these characters. I know Mario and Luigi, but these anime characters? A bird and bear? A 2D cut out? I can't buy this game because I will be so scared and confused." Oh wait, people did buy it. People that never played a Smash Bros game before this one, people that have played every game, and people that skipped the last few entries played it. Sorry if this seemed like a rant. Dude, this is a day one buy for me. Sticker Star seemed like a misstep for the series, but Color Splash has gone on to create its own game style out of SS's ashes, which seems to be continuing in this game. And as someone who LOVED Color Splash, I am SO hyped to see how this game will evolve the formula set forth by Color Splash. The ring-based battles, the weird Arms-like overworld mechanic that Paper Mario now has, and the clear distinction between friend and foe with paper vs origami really sets the tone for this game, and the bar pretty high for me. As an aside, I don't think those vehicles will play too much of a role in this game; rather, I think they'll just be short mini-games. Not sure what they'll do exactly, though, so we'll see. P.S. Did anyone catch the Origami Shy Guys? They've been teased since Yoshi's Crafted World. Who knew they were gonna appear in a new game, let alone a Paper Mario game?

I am super excited for this! It has elements and vibes from TTYD, Super Paper Mario, and Paper Jam a little bit. Also, very nice to see the audience is back from TTYD. The story also looks insane and reminds me of TTYD and Super Paper Mario but with new ideas. Also, they really made the battle system in this game turn based. Literally it's turn based, because of turning the screen around during fights. I sure hope this means a return for Paper Mario as being a great series is imminent. Please let this mean Paper Mario is back. I swear if I was not at work right when I found out about this, I would've cried tears of joy. I'm very very happy.

I really want to see the hammer in use, because I think it's going to be an AOE, so you're trying to target an enemy surround by others to hit 4, rather than the straight line of the jump; and with other attacks too possibly (they do have a very large menu, although that will likely include the partner moves too) I think it could be really interesting trying to figure out different shapes you want to make to get your attack multipliers.

I apologize in advance, but I can't help but suspect that whoever's the design lead of the Paper Mario series in recent years is different from the one who made Paper Mario games up to Super Paper Mario; all the ones before that - and including it - were bursting at the seams with paper-mario-esclusive enemies and characters, while ALL of the ones after that have only one or two. And a not-insignificant part of me suspects that they're trying to find a way to make the "consumables only" battle system work, somehow, only to mess up again; not once was there ever a well-known game that succeeded in making a likable system like that. Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time had an item-based special attack system and that was pretty fun. The only difference between that and Sticker Star/Color Splash's combat is that the Partners in Time specials had action commands that either existed (unlike sticker star) or were somewhat challenging (unlike color splash). The formula works if it's done well.

I think people need to stop getting disappointed by what they think the game should have been (a ‘return to form’ even tho most of the previous paper Mario games are quite linear) and need to be more welcoming of Nintendo taking the series in new directions, maybe it hasn’t always turned out for the better but people lowering their expectations just because the game has a smidge of colour splash or whatever is really dumb, one-sided and it shows that the people that think that way have an extremely linear critical eye meaning that if the game looks like a game they didn’t enjoy, they immediately don’t like it

Interesting that this isn’t the holiday title; I was getting worried that Nintendo literally had nothing to release for the rest of the year (whether because of virus delays or poor planning), but they have this, if they still don’t have a holiday title they could move this over to October/ December, so they must have something

That video was awesome, I'm hyped. My money is going into this. Mainly for the storyline of it
