If they’re going to push the RPG elements to the wayside, then they might as well go all the way and make another platformer like Super Paper Mario. That game knew what it wanted to do and wasn’t trying to be something it wasn’t.
@JakeJakers4 жыл бұрын
A friend of mine asked me something that I think is worth sharing here: Why does Paper Mario still use turn based combat? if there's no experience, what value is there? It simply destroys the pacing. Super Paper Mario proved a Paper Mario game can work without turn based combat, and the Origami King has real time encounters. If they're dead set on not following in the previous game's steps, then drop the turn based combat. It feels like "It's Paper Mario, we need turn based battles" but have no interest in having stat building (which is what off-sets how repetitive turn based battles are). For Paper Mario 7 that we get 4 years from now, please either make a turn-based RPG with experience, or just drop turn-based combat outright and make Super Paper Mario 3D. I'd rather have one or the other.
@okayokey4 жыл бұрын
True, but then again, think about this: if you only liked the turn based combat because of the XP, do you actually like the battles? Games are supposed to be fun! I like that the battles have no purpose because like that, when I do want to battle, I can do it for fun and if I don’t want to do it, I can just skip it and still have the same amount of skill to beat the boss.

Let me simplify it like this, Imagine if zero Mario Games existed. Then Galaxy One and Two release. 5 years go by and the next Mario game releases is Mario Kart. We expected a platformer, we wanted a platformer, we asked for a platformer, Then we were teased a platformer, then we didn’t get it? Mario Kart is still great, but a slap in the face to fans. We’ve been asking for a certain game, 3 times now we’ve been teased it and they didn’t deliver. I'm still baffled how they've made the same mistake with the battle system for 3 games now. If you're not going to have a progression system, then what's the point of turn-based battles? Just make the game a puzzle-platformer since you're going to avoid enemies as much as you can anyway. They seem to have the idea with the paper mache baddies that you fight outside in the world so they should just keep that with every other enemy in the game. The boss battles can stay though, cause they look freakin' awesome.

I find it so frustrating that Nintendo did address some of the combat issues of Sticker Star and Color Splash by giving you permanent attack options, and THEN chose this time to radically change the battle system again. I’m no fan of the modern Paper Mario formula, but they keep saying “hm, people complained about this aspect, let’s just replace it entirely, or offer something else that doesn’t even address the complaint.” Like if you wanted ketchup on your burger, and they offered you tomatoes instead-and then they FINALLY decide to give you a condiment instead, and they hand you mustard. I just don’t understand why they can’t iterate on things that need improvement without throwing the baby out with the bath water.
@mrfox51174 жыл бұрын
Actually all of the weapons have durability accept for the basic "boot" and "hammer". So they actually did not fully address the criticism since the only way to have boss fights not last over a hour (the venumentals) is to have good weapons.

Yeah it seems like Nintendo and their associated deva are almost always trying to innovate, even to such a degree that is wholly unnecessary. Sometimes (most notably with Paper Mario) it's like they've already pulled a diamond out of the rough and instead of cutting it and refining into an even prettier gem, they let it sit uncut and just dig for more. There are Nintendo other series that do try not to completely throw out what made their predecessors good while still trying new things, like the main 3D Mario games (64, Sunshine, Galaxy, Odyssey).

I think it’s better to call the first 3 Paper Mario games “Mario’s Story” (the Japanese title, and it fits the theme that those first 3 games have amazing characters, stories, and didn’t focus too much on the paper aesthetic), whereas the new stuff is “Paper Mario” (much heavier emphasis on arts and crafts, not as much emphasis on the strong, RPG and story-telling elements of the first 3)

@@starless4146 Sticker star is really not that bad. It honestly seems like a much better game than Origami King. Out of the modern trilogy, Sticker Star has the best gameplay, but the worst presentation (to others. I much prefer a straightforward game than empty open worlds. Color Splash's battle mechanics were always either too drawn out or too stupidly easy.) I finished Sticker Star. I put down Color Splash around 40% through. The 3D made everything truly beautiful. Origami King makes Color Splash look like the original two games. A lot of people just like to bandwagon hate against Sticker Star because it's the popular thing to do. It's the first one to change things drastically in a way that wasn't received well by fans generally. Now if a Paper Mario is garbage, it's nothing surprising. Even to be expected.

I personally like the new game a lot, the problem with making a new TTYD is that Nintendo is a different company than it was way back when. They’ve strayed too far from what Paper Mario used to be, it makes little sense to go back now. People keep saying they messed up again, does it not occur to people that this game isn’t bad just because it’s not what they want? I grew up with and completely enjoyed TYYD but I still enjoy and consider this a Paper Mario game. At the end of the day, Nintendo is a company that makes games easy and accessible for everyone, especially kids, and I’m not sure how well another TTYD would land with modern day kids.

Liking Star Star based on just World 1 and part of World 2 is perfectly understandable, since the level design isn't yet a problem that puts Sticker Star's issues of pointless battles, excessive backtracking, and overly restrictive boss fights on full display. The end of World 2 has its atrocious boss, then World 3 is where the quality of everything falls off a cliff that the later worlds only slightly climb out of.

After having played PM64 and TTYD, I bought Sticker Star without watching any trailer. I just trusted the brand. It was hard to me to understand the game. Then I lend it to my sister (who also played PM64) and instead she loved the game. RPG games tend to have solid fan bases due to the deep stories, characters and gameplay; so when they change it a little bit, a whole earthquake occurs. Casual players on the contrary don't worry a lot and like the games. I think Nintendo can make games that fulfill both fan and casual players expectations, just like BotW or SSBU.

Ok, so this one might a long banter, but please, hear me out: I think some games should be valued by themselves and not only by how they compare to the saga they belong. Sure, it has a Paper Mario name on it, but what is considered a true game in that saga is a value put by the gamers, not the devs. If someone has the right (or the authority) to set in stone what a Paper Mario game is it's them. For them as long it's Mario made of paper it's enough. I'm not saying we should oversimplify that idea, but we should at least acknowledge it. And then I see so many people trashing on the battle system in regards that it has no usefulness because there's no EXP system. Even if we assume it's not useful, the game allows you to avoid the battles or flee them. Also, as you progress and "become stronger" you have the chance to just jump onto the enemies or hit them with the hammer, again, giving you the choice of battling or not. Sure, you get fewer coins that way, but it's still your choice. And here's the thing: The battle system is fun BUT also useful. You get coins to purchase accessories, items, and weapons. All of them somehow compensate if the puzzle side of the battles is tough or frustrating to the player. When playing, I noticed that, for example, spinies can be defeated easily with iron boots (purchasable weapon) if you arrange them in a straight line, but if your skills with the puzzle are better trained, you can arrange them in a 2x2 area, then being able to smash them with the hammer, with no need to spend on weapons. It's up to the player how to face the battles. Coins are not always abundant, especially once you can buy accessories. So the battle becomes something important to master since you get more coins if you don't get damaged and/or have a perfect or great enemy arrangement. Last but not least: Boss battles. The arrow system. The best way to put your skills to the test. At least with already two bosses in my pocket, I have to say that the battles are not precisely hard. There's no OHKO (maybe later, but I don't know yet), but the battle is quite long if you don't move the panels in the most optimal way. The game doesn't punish you severely for taking your time, but again, you get the feeling of accomplishment when being able to arrange everything nicely and hitting hard on the enemy. Sure, there're expectations to be met when it comes to a game that belongs to a saga, but we can't be so blind to its own merits to the point of trashing on it. The game looks great, has really clever writing, beautiful soundtrack and personally, I enjoy the battle system and the fact that the game gives you the freedom to have it or not.

I'm confused the review was very positive but your words made the game sound bad? You said the game felt dragged out at parts which were just barely made up by the pay off, that isn't good game design. You said that you found yourself mostly avoiding enemy fights were you could, that isn't good game design. I'm not sure what to say the final result is just an opinion of you saying you liked the game but from just these TWO points alone, the TWO key mechanics of the paper Mario series I have to say this is not a good game. The goal of an RPG is to have an immersive story and battles that have a pay off whether it be getting items or experience. The story seems bare bones and the game seems artificially lengthened by large locations that take a long time to travel through. The battle system is a puzzle that, in essence, once you solve one you've solved them all. There is no growth with the player seemingly present. Granted I haven't played the game and this is just what I took off the review but 'Liked' seems to be giving to much credit to a game that shouldn't have that attention. Again I understand this is an opinion based review answer but when the review pretty much says 'its better than sticker star 8/10' I feel the consumers are done dirty by the review. I wish Paper Mario was held to a better standard as a game series, hell I wish Nintendo as a company listened to fan request more earnestly. Giving a game seemingly a good review because the previous recent entries were bad and this one was mediocre is not okay. Paper Mario The Origami King should be reviewed properly with all Mario RPG's in mind. How did it compare to Paper Mario and TTYD? How did it compare to the Mario & Luigi games? How did it compare to Sticker Star and Colour splash? This reviews comparisons are lack luster and don't tell the full story. The description states "...including comparisons to Thousand Year Door and Color Splash!" when all you say is Thousand door has better pacing and Colour splash has better dialogue. Tell me more! WHY?! What about the combat doesn't feel as good as TTYD? Why is this a good or bad thing? Look I wasn't going to get the game any way but reviews that leave a positive statement to a game that is only average at best cause more people to buy the game thus Nintendo think paper mario is taking the right direction. It isn't and it hasn't been for a long time. Thanks to anyone who read what turned out to be a rant :D

Its nice to see Nintendo taking risks with a franchise for a change - sure might not be to everyone's taste, but I think at the rate they're going there will be a paper mario for everyone - with the heavier focus on puzzles definitely more of the dungeon crawling element. And levelling systems are fine, but often results in arbitrary difficulty especially when you can just overlevel your way out of a situation - that said currently replaying TTYD and its delightful, that train level is great
@Meeba4 жыл бұрын
*Spoiler Free* Just finished the game, and it definitely isn't as good as TTYD. But that really doesn't mean it wasn't a fantastic experience. I actually had a blast playing and if fighting enemies ever got too annoying, you could quite literally just skip over them if you did not feel like fighting. The boss fights were loads better by far than just normal fights, which isn't really good on Nintendo's side because there are like 10 (ish) boss fights compared to the (what feels like 1000) normal fights. The scenery in this game is just a visual treat, it looks so tasteful and colorful so I really was "wow'd" by what they did. Seriously. It's a really pretty game. I was a bit bummed out to hear you didn't like the Vellumental fights, as I thought the temples were really fun and the boss fight with the Vellumentals at the end were really fun. Just thought that it was super surprising to hear that some of these boss fights, which took me 5 to 10 minutes to beat, took over an hour for Andre? (13:47 for reference.) The dialogue wasn't as colorful as color splash (ha ha) but that wasn't a problem because I was sick of forced "meta 4th wall breaking" jokes anyways, like the age rating joke in that game. Like seriously, it's not funny at all. *TL:DR* To wrap up my unneedishly long KZbin comment game summary, the visuals are _sooooo_ pretty, the boss fights were really fun and didn't take long to beat unlike Andre (13:47), and the dialogue/story was pretty good. Not on TTYD's level, but definitely close finally. Strong 8/10.
