Cortez! One of the coolest bosses in the game, if you ask me, with one of the most incredible music. I'd honestly say the HD remix and the original OST here are evenly matched! Makes for a really awesome culmination of this whole pirate-themed chapter, too... Even if the pirate-theming saturation sort of dwindled out in the middle. Honestly, I'm surprised by how divided people are on this boss - though thankfully not in the argumentative sort of way. I'm one of the people who had a hard time with this bag of bones, and I've seen quite a few other folks who streamed this game have similar experiences. I don't think it's *the* badge, exactly - but perhaps badges, as a whole. People new to this game might just accidentally de-optimize themselves for this fight, or be unaware of certain partner skills since they might never use them. (Or worse, never get around to upgrading them). I certainly forgot Vivian had a screen-clear, and Flurrie hasn't... exactly been relevant for a while. Cortez's second phase is also a little distracting - you can target his head *or* the bone pile, and that gem in his ribcage seems important... though it really isn't. This guy is sort of... accidentally optimized to punish a lack of game knowledge. Though I guess that's all fair play to a Pirate King... ... As for his design, I always figured his skull was the only "original" part of himself. If the guy pilfered treasure while alive, why not pilfer the bones of his victims afterwards? Making use of all of the remains of your victims is *super* hardcore, and perhaps explains why all the weapons are in such rough shape, and so varied - just more treasure to hoard. The HP value could then just mark the structural integrity of the "body" he's constructed, save for the final phase, of course. It all really comes together to paint a picture of just how legendarily avaricious this guy was - so much so that his soul is tied to his hoard of loot, and has amassed not just treasure, but a heaping pile of victims as well. (Heck, the entire Grotto is essentially a horde of ships he's "collected".) It actually paints a sort of sad picture, if this wasn't a Mario game - a ghost so addicted to the one thing it achieved in life, it gets stuck in a loop: refusing to relent the treasure, but in doing so, is unable to fully pass on - only amassing more and more, for no reason other than to simply fulfill the sole desire to hoard and pilfer. ... It's almost metaphorical, really. ... I do like the twist at the end, though, where he's sort of instantly mellows out. "ONE gemstone? ... Just the one? Y'know what? Sure. What's the point in being dead if you don't live once in a while?" Does amusingly illustrate that once the treasure-hoarding isn't a topic anymore, guy just relents to being a tired old spirit - but is still bitter enough to huck you out the window. I honestly forgot he did that...

I think the Crystal Star bit with Cortez is my favorite bit out of the whole game Like we go through this battle, not only for him to mistaken what we wanted from here in the first place, but also just for him to go “oh yeah sure take it, I don’t want it anyway” so casually

Even if it does make the entire chapter feel a bit anticlimactic, it's still a pretty good ironic joke lol. Like, actually one of the better jokes in the script.

4:37 Superguarding is such a great mechanic because I've seen this game played by myself and others dozens of times and yet there are still successful Superguards that audibly make me go "hell yeah."

Same (recently beat this game for the first time) but when I fought Hooktail and suddenly cracked out of SuperGuarding her attacks I felt so proud of myself for no reason

Pretty sure the only reason Cortez gave up the Crystal Stone was because he knew Mario was gonna pulverize him into dust if he kept going. And such, he acted friendly to get rid of the plumber.

And finally, instead of getting stuff from 64, TTYD gets something from SMRPG! Pirate boss that has the star, and instead of being killed he just gives it to Mario without much fuss after a fight. (And, spoilers, the similarities won't end there).

If people are running Mario and Goombella’s default attack power in a HP centric build they deal about 4 damage doing regular attacks and more using good old unnerfed bouncing, and if not getting rid of them properly they have to deal with the weapons attacking around 3-4 times. Think it can deal about 18-ish+ poison total? I can see that causing trouble fast if HP was depleted some earlier in the fight. Up until now it’s possible to muscle through relying on health. But no matter how high HP gets, you don’t get any better at healing. Items might be used up already and also don’t heal that much considering that wastes turns. From that perspective Cortez is a step up. So I can see getting stuck might be possible in theory. Even though using the right strategy easily gets you through. Difficulty with the final boss(and chapter 6) follows some the same principles(only much more unforgiving) so I guess Cortez is a first warning shot.

If you wanted to get creative, you could interpret Sweet Feast as Cortez's "eating the audience" move. Why he'd require a Crystal Star for that.....yeah, you got me.

I was going to be disappointed if I found that I was the only one to reference that during this playthrough. (I referenced it during the curtain intro, since I was worried people wouldn't get it quite as easily if I waited 'til this episode to.) Edit: I just now realized it was you who replied to me on that episode.🤦Silly me.

I don’t remember if Cortez used Spanish in parts of his dialogue in the original version, but it's neat here that Cortez speaks with more Spanish words than just tagging "amigo" at the end of his sentences.

Since I don't have a ton to say about this episode...Cortex gets referenced by Gulliver in Animal Croasing, which is cool I guess!
You see that bone pile underneath Cortez? if you attack it, Cortez will drop down a little. Hit it again, and his core opens up, which has 0 defense might I add. Also, in phase 3, Flurrie can blow his weapons away, removing them for the remainder of the fight.

7:48 Don't worry, he'll pull a Sans just fight you until you lose or give up. Asd he say, just guarding a treasure is boring. He'd probably enjoy the company for a while.

1:11 I guess they know Crystal Stars heal you when you get them for the first time (and it makes sense considering a certain thing, but I forgot if it has already been mentioned at this point of the story so I won't explicitly mention it) as him immediately ambushing Mario instead of doing what he ends up doing would make more sense otherwise - him being here definitely makes sense in case Mario failed as that would allow him to take on a weakened Cortez. 1:42 If he's thinking of pulling the trick of that room in Surfshine Harbor now that's evil! Half jokes aside, "be lost in darkness" would make you think of something à la Shadow Games from Yu-Gi-Oh, but it's actually just a death threat as that's the most Cortez actually does. 4:01 That combined with potentially being underleveled and also Cortez certainly not being a pushover when he gets to attack, especially during his final phase. 5:42 The left side should consider themselves lucky that this isn't the boss fight against Hooktail or even more so the final boss... 8:42 My guess is because of Cortez automatically healing between phases and after the fight and/or absorbing the souls of half of the audience to do so. 11:56 Hope the barrels have been taken away by the current because if they really sank those themselves they would be really dumb.

Nah, I remember Cortez more or less being my biggest road block growing up with this game back in the day, so I can believe first timers who don't know about your Power Pluses, not having Vivian high enough, etc getting stuck a bit. If you let those swords get so much as a turn off, they can wreck an unsuspecting sap. Cortez is easy, but only if you know how to properly shut down his options or... are an adult with an average level of understanding lol.

Cortez's sound bite is weird because I thought he'd have more of the distinctive rattle unique to Dry Bones. Guess not.

I consider Cortez’s remastered theme a downgrade from the original. It’s too metal and punk rock and even took out the bongos that were in the original. Though I do appreciate that he speaks more Spanish now instead of like two words in Spanish. Any bit of representation is appreciated.
@toastr1255Ай бұрын
Yeah, I feel this way about several of the remake themes. They put too much stuff in that just doesn't fit and waters down the theming of the original.

Actually, with 6:26, only one of those is a rapier, the one near Cortez in the front of the stage. The two swords in front of mario look like a european longsword and cutlass, and obviously the other weapon near Cortez is a hook
