For a much harder challenge check out the spring loaded rocket gliders that a friend of Flite Test makes! These might give you some inspiration for how to maximize flight with a rocket motor. Generally it's straight up then float down spiraling as slowly as possible. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bGjJoYKfas5so68

I have a question? For making a small airplane to break sound barrier what is ratio of fuel to mass. Or is it possible really???
Video idea: try breaking the sound barrier with model rockets

Really old Bottle Rockets work well for paper airplanes. By old, I mean Bottle Rockets from 2-3 years ago that someone put in the Garage and forgot about. Older Bottle Rockets don't burn quite as fast, so it's more gentle on the paper airplane... This is what I learned going to college in Tallahassee, Florida.
Of course it was a difficult project. I haven't even gotten past you explaining where you got the idea yet. Here's the problems I can see. Center of gravity. Center of thrust. Wings not being rigid enough. And as you've already covered, fire. That being said I am interested in seeing this play out so I'll be watching the full thing.

I used to use fire crackers that I turned into rocket engines. I shot my paper airplanes from a little balcony. Some models worked quite well. The fire cracker engines where not that powerful and that helped. And yes, I hade some fiery miss-haps too.

As kids we did this 60 years ago. We did 3 stage rocket planes with “penny” sky rockets. During the Second World War my Dad and his buddies made insect powered planes (the problem he reported was convincing bugs to flap their wings while their bodies were glued to something).

Paper planes are kinda my home ground not gonna lie, the things u need to fly the planes outside are some elevons and some side fins for greater stability. The more compact the plane, the better it will fly

I staple a penny at the C.G. of my paper airplanes within the keel fold. I also cut elevator control surfaces on the trailing edge to impart a slight pitch-up moment. When thrown by hand, these paper airplanes go through a series of gentle stalls, recovering easily from each one. The net effect is that it typically triples the free-throw range of the airplane.

Make an EDF plane with afterburner. Tip: Use a butane canister for the fuel and inject it into a ring made out of copper pipe with holes pointing backwards and use a toy zapper to light the fuel. Of course, use a valve or a servo to activate the fuel Tip to avoid making a flying flame: cover the exhaust with aluminium foil and fiberglass to isolate it from the fuselage

Did you try any designs that weren't darts? Nice to see you doing the hard work so we don't have to find out for ourselves that a rocket powered paper plane won't really work!
@Nevir2022 жыл бұрын
I think anything not a dart would only make all the issues he encountered far worse. Broader wingspan is only going to tend to collapse the wings under sudden thrust.
@alphahill25862 жыл бұрын
FWIW, you were probably also getting issues because putting the engine above the CG would cause a moment about the CG which would tend to nosedive the plane. A combination of your trimming and increased speed = more lift would have made some of them nose up though. Ultimately super unstable though, I would imagine. If you wanted to actually get this to work, the thrust vector has to pass *perfectly* through the CG without any offset. You can do that because the plane lets you put the engine in the fold, but the overall plane would be so lightweight that the CG would probably move significantly as the plane itself flexes during powered flight. You might try a wooden dowel of comparable weight attached to the front of the engine as a CG bias so that the the CG doesn't move as much. If you do that, just make sure to balance the dowel+engine combination *very* slightly behind the CG of the base airplane and you'd probably get better results.

It should stull. Be possible to use a paper plane, just use a design that can fly at a lower speed that generates more lift. A "stunt" plane fits the bill as it would also be rigid enough for a motor. Then just trim to handle the extra speed of the motor.

When I was a little kid, me and my brother added a 'howler' to a paper airplane, this howlers where indeed small rockets, constructed for the generation of a loud sound. We ignited the fuse and threw the plane, it was gliding fast and stable but we feared the fuse would be to long, than suddenly the howler started to work, the plane caught speed and went higher and higher, exactly like it should have been. Today they don't produce this howlers any more, they where like rocket without any stabilization and flew everywhere sometimes hitting persons nearby ...

I would like to point out that the severe triangle shape we fold most paper plains into is not conducive to Gliding. Any actual piloted planes shaped like this have Computer Pilot Assist to help in controlling the plane. If you folded them to look more like popular plane or glider models, they would fly better. Also, putting the engine into the fold COMPLETELY changes the aerodynamics. And when gliding, speed changes how things fly: too fast, the plane tips up and Stalls; too slow, and it swoops down; non-stable designs just spin and fall.
@Chaos_God_of_Fate6 ай бұрын
I think if you used something like foam board coated in a heat resistant material that it'd work much better- but I suppose then it isn't a paper airplane anymore. EDIT: looks like I made the comment JUST before you actually did what I suggested. I'll leave the comment though. Nice work, I've always wondered about this myself!
