High school washroom: no soap left, one dryer that comes on for five seconds, and someone thought it was a funny idea to throw the paper towels into the dustbin.

As a Public Health Inspector, I was very happy to see you take on this topic and even happier to see the results. Honestly, I detest air dryers. The problem with them is, as you've stated, they take too long, but also that only one person can use them at a time. Taking paper towel takes mere seconds and you can then leave, allowing someone else to use the same dispenser. In the 45 seconds it takes someone to properly use a dryer (and they never do), 9 people could use a paper towel dispenser.

People... Stop saying that paper causes deforestation... This is NOT true. I lived in a small town with the biggest paper factory in Latin America. A lot of people in my family worked there also. Paper is made with Pinus, that they plant a new one every time they cut a full grown one. They don't go out cutting native trees and just expected for the forest never to end... this would be insane. The only time deforestation occurred was 70 years ago when they first plant the Pinus. They don't need to deforest new areas since although the production of paper is higher every year, a Pinus that took +15 years to grow now is done -7 years, and have a lot less lignin and more cellulose. And the efficient of the system is also way higher. Besides, all the areas with Pinus have a lot of natural forest, a way higher percentage that is required by law. And Paper help decrease CO2 in the air absorbing it, thing that most people when counting the carbon foot step forgets about it. And please don't comment that this is only one case... Every Paper factory has to plant it's owe trees since natural ones is awfully bad at making paper. It's cheaper to plant Pinus and have a efficient system than to get natural trees.

So use paper towels if you're presented with a choice. Slight hitch: most UK public conveniences have dryers alone - ranging from the "Did somebody disconnect the heating element?" kind and the "I could run faster than the motor in this thing" kind up to the modern Xcelerator (which blasts air out at such a rate it exerts a force on the skin under the flow, and also shines a blue LED on the active zone) and the Airblade (expensive, ugly, rubbish as they claim one pass in/out of the "blade" is sufficient - more like up to 5 passes).

I think you misused the term deforestation. Deforestation is the removal of a forest or stand of trees where the land is thereafter converted to a non-forest use. Examples of deforestation include conversion of forestland to farms, ranches, or urban use. (Wikipedia) Most paper in the US is not considered deforestation, since the harvested land normally remains for future forest production.

I have a question though... Even if dryers can in theory consume less energy than the paper toils, isn't better for the environment that we use more paper? I know, it sounds stupid until you realize that 97% of the paper that we use comes from reforested trees. The more paper you consume the more reforested areas they might have to have in order to produce more paper. A tree like eucalyptus needs 9 years to grow and in that period while it's waiting to be harvested it stays absorbing carbon from the environment, making oxygen and latter when the paper toil gets to a landfill, that carbon is trapped for at least 50 years, until it decomposes enough where it turn into methane gas and can be reused to produce electricity. Meanwhile dryers use electricity that's never recycled back, and this electricity might come from coal, fossil fuels. If you are lucky it can come from nuclear energy or other non carbon emitting energy sources, but the more clean energy we consume, the less it remains to power other things that otherwise will do consume non clean energy. I suspect, even I didn't really did the calculation, that even the total amount of energy used to harvest/transform trees into paper is much bigger than the energy used by 2000 W dryer to dry your hands, in the end lots of the energy used to produce paper come from the trees itself (the process is complicated, but 65% of the energy to produce paper can come from the black liquor en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_liquor ) maybe in the the end the difference isn't that big at all, while dryers don't contribute to absorb carbon in no way. So in summary a dryer perhaps could be worst to the environment than paper toils. And cutting trees to make paper isn't that bad considering that it will lead to more reforestation. To be honest, I don't really know the answer to that. But I'm just wondering.

one massive problem you missed there.. you need a truck to move the logs, maybe a boat, animals get killed and or left hungry, you need to keep getting more paper into public places, which means more carbon from the trucks, hand dryer is one time install, then it uses fuck all energy
@nixdorfbrazil10 жыл бұрын
***** I think we must keep things really straight here. A truck full of trees will end up making tons of paper toils. The the energy cost by a single sheet of paper is minimal. Second, most of the forests for paper are grown in a way that they remain sustainable. You can't chop off all the trees at once, and they aren't exactly a nice environments for wild life. Even they might have some birds and ants living on the trees, we're not talking about dislodging entire ecosystem here. Usually those forests are cultivated in land that otherwise would be used for wheat, or whatever. So harvesting those trees is similar to harvesting some other cultures. We're not talking about Bambi running from a natural forest. No large animals live no those reforestation farms. But even in nature, when a forest grows too much, eventually due the organic material buildup it will catch fire by a lightning or something anyway every 20 years in average. This is how nature works. So I'm not denying that some animals would be killed or dislodged in the process, but I guess it's much less then what are you imagining. When you buy a land to build a paper factory it makes sense to build it near the cultivated trees, so no one is talking into sending trees form miles away. This was done 50 years ago and is done now only for furniture/construction wood where you are grabbing natural trees that grows in natural forests. Reforested trees must be cultivated near their processing destination. And not only that, I just did some research and (as I suspected) most of the modern Kraft paper plants, produce more energy than they consume and they often have to sell the excess energy back to the grid. It still happen that some paper factories are still pollutant and energy ineffective but that happens in countries that lack regulation and where there is cheap fossil fuel energy available. In most countries, it's a bad business practice to waste that energy, and eventually all plants will be energy efficient because it makes economical sense. By the other hand, when you use a dryer no energy is recycled or no excess energy is produced. If you take in consideration energy alone paper has to cost less then dryer energy by the simple fact that if it really was more expensive the cost alone would make companies to shift to dryer as they would have to pay for the energy, the paper itself and the transportation back and forth (trash). I don't see many companies loosing their sleep over the paper toil handling costs and running to more cost efficient dryers. And you are ignoring that the paper toil has the advantage of sequestering carbon from the atmosphere, offsetting their carbon footprint by transportation. But I suspect that the net carbon foot print for the paper industry is in fact negative and good for the environment.
@biolinkstudios10 жыл бұрын
Nix Dorf Great points but lets talk about the hand dryers, you said that they use energy and does not recycle that Energy, but the Machines that make toilet paper do the same but they keep doing it forever, but once you got a dyson airblade in every public place you don't need to make it again, thus paper in the long run, produces a larger carbon foot print to a Dyson as that is comparable because they do the job at the same speed, remember we need things that we only have to make one of and then be able to reuse it, fusion energy will fix the whole electrical thing, tablets will become finer and more like paper, my surface pro works like paper just need to get rid of the fat, here www.earthshare.org/2008/09/stop-the-paper.html, so yeah using tree based paper is more harmful in the long run
@nixdorfbrazil10 жыл бұрын
***** You've lost me. What the cost of making a single dyson airblade has to do with it? By the same logic the cost of building a paper factory is spent "just once", and they all will require maintenance... but what does that has to do with it? Every single time that you are using an airblade it's consuming energy and that's a lot. According to their site it's aprox 5 W per dry (assuming 10 seconds). With a 1600 W powered engine and heaters and plus the standby power this can be a lot in a month. By the other hand, once the paper sheet is in place there's no power consumption (unless you use a powered dispenser). And as I said the paper making production offsets it's power consumption so much that they have to SELL back the energy to the grid. And if you add the men hours, taxes, and all that thing, the paper gets into a public restroom in a comparable cost to a dryer cost. I guess depending on your energy costs at your country/state the paper is even more cost effective on dollar amounts (I'm not considering the environment). Fusion energy is a dream that it's at least 50 years in the future, and we have to overcome the carbon emissions now. Nowadays 67% of US energy matrix comes from Coal, Oil and Gas. While 16% are renewable 17% are nuclear. So basically using a dryer is trowing more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, while now paper is sequestrating carbon. This technology (paper production) is mature now, while even if the Nuclear Fusion becomes a reality, it will take 50 more years to become widespread and the investment on building a Fusion Reactor might be too much for most nations even afford it. 50 years ago they said that the computers would end with the need of paper use. While the paper industry has being growing exponentially since 1961. chrislang.files.wordpress.com/2008/02/paper.png I don't like to cut down trees. The use of land for reforested trees can have huge environmental impact. But I'm concerned with Global Warming. And there's no better mechanism to sequestrate carbon from the atmosphere than planting trees. I'm not even sure if paper production is a viable model to sequestrate cabon in the long run. And they deal with lot's of nasty chemicals like sulfur and soda (NaOH). But if producing paper can help to diminish the Global Warming effects on the short run, why not go with it? It seems counter intuitive and I might be wrong (I'm almost sure that I'm), but I'd like to know the reasons why I might be wrong. And if it really helps... let's consume more paper and stop recycling the damn thing! :D Even if we are using more tablets, and computers, we are receiving more junk mail then ever, we are shipping more stuff though mail (that requires wrapping, paper boxes, etc and countries like China and India will be using more and more of everything. Also cellulose is a very versatile product that can be used in a variety of products, as clothing, bio fuel, etc. Also reforested trees can be used to make furniture, and almost anything that you today use plain wood. So trees farms aren't going away any time soon. To be honest, I think that we should develop some kind of WiFi trees. Then I'll guarantee you that we would have trees everywhere. :)
@biolinkstudios10 жыл бұрын
Great words and idea's more trees, less paper, and WiFi Trees would be nice ;), we need to make man made trees, that convert carbon dioxide at a faster rate

HeyItsHannah☯ Well no. if you think about it. all the electricity and fuel used to bring that paper towel to you for you to only use once is a huge waste of energy. It would be pretty cheap to build a hand dryer and they dont really use all that much power.
@Shuizid10 жыл бұрын
I would ask for more information about that topic. Handdryers use energy and are more complex to build and maintain and are also harder to recicle after their lifetime expires. But papertowels need to be reproduced quite often are are used up much more. so... yeah, both have their downsides. But it is not that hard to actually plant a forest but it might take some time for the tress to grow... The question is: on which data do u make such a statement?
