Excellent video! A paper, voice coil former is one of the magic ingredients, in my long, utterly obsessive and expensive speaker quest… Ha ha I have about 30 guitar speakers in boxes at my house, that I will eventually list for sale and release back into the wild. However, I’ve found that my favorite speakers ALL have paper voice coil formers. The Eminence Black Mountain, Private Jack, and Cannabis Rex all have the paper voicecoil. It really puts the icing on the cake, so to speak. For me, it all started with the blue square magnet AlNiCo 10” speaker in my original 1990s fender Pro Junior. It was just a sort of magic that I couldn’t quite put my finger on. Thanks for the great video!

Those are really nice sounding speakers. I didn't know the "Assy" was by WGS. 😆 I guess that means WGS assembled them.

I like the paper, sounds like it would fit amazingly in a mix.

Hello. Both sound great. I hear the standard warmer, more bass sweeter top end. The paper sounds like extended top end and more high mid content with less bottom end. I liked both a lot on the first part of the video with those clean tones. When you start adding gain I still like them both but start to prefer the standard because of the bigger sound and I guess I’ll like it even more than the paper on higher gain tones. Very nice Jack as always.

Your compromise solution reflects the strategy of multi-driver speakers in home audio. Not surprisingly, as one moves up the food chain in drivers from low frequency to high, the need for greater “articulation” and detail increase as well. In short, I would want the paper formers on my midrange and tweeters. And that’s exactly where they are. 😊

Amazing speakers. The 8-SC and 8-SA are hands-down the best replacement for a vintage Fender Champ. And they are among the lower priced.

I've actually been trying to decide between these two speakers to replace my 64 VC's original alnico. Which one would you say if you had to pick one?
@GoProMoFo-yj5wd
@GoProMoFo-yj5wd 9 күн бұрын
That’s tough. I guess I would say that the SA AlNiCo has a little less headroom and more mids and leans toward Derek & the Dominoes. The SC ceramic has more sparkle where the mids & lows are tighter and leans towards The James Gang. I’ve moved the SA to my EC Vibro Champ which is brighter & tighter and the SC in my ‘60 Champ, which a thick mid lower headroom amp. I will say I’m glad to have them both if I get urge to switch them up. They’re relatively inexpensive and well made. Hope that helps.

@@GoProMoFo-yj5wd Hey thanks for the feedback man! I'm tempted to go with the SA since the original speaker in my 64 is also an alnico, but maybe the answer is to just get both and compare them lol! Cheers

Honestly, the only time I’ve ever thought any speaker sounded better than any other, or worse than any other, is when I hear them back to back with other speakers, like when I hear back to back speaker shootouts on KZbin. And even then my opinion can go back and forth if I go back and listen to the comparison again later. When I got my 1966 Princeton Amp, it was in a 1980 Yamaha cab with a 12” Yamaha speaker. It sounded like a Fender Princeton. I’ve had cheap old 60s amps that I’m sure had plain, very fragile, radio speakers in them. They sounded great; actually those were some of the sweetest sounding speakers I’ve heard, and they are things that other people would swap out in a heartbeat, 🤷🏼. I read all the comments on KZbin from people constantly changing out speakers in their amps, chasing whatever tone they have in their heads that they are after, I can’t help but think, maybe that’s just not the amp for you. That thought becomes particularly prominent when people are doing circuit mods to their amps - usually its people trying to make their Fender have a more Marshall sound. I wish they would just buy the amp that has the sound they actually want in the first place. (This doesn’t reflect in the least on the content of *your* video btw. I always enjoy your content. I’m just rambling about my personal preferences, 🙂)

Some of the Thiele-Small parameters of the speaker change when you change the voice coil former material. Going from Kapton to paper makes the whole moving assembly lighter and changes the free standing resonance frequency of the speaker. Lighter also implies higher slew rate - less mass for the magnet to push around.

When I was watching the intro with headphones, after the standard one, which I loved immediately, the paper one seammed to sound so "mono". So the standard one sounds more full, warm, and hifi-like vs. the paper one which is more pure, maybe with a bit more detail in the highs, and a bit clearer. I am loooking for a replacement speker for a while for my SFPR, and th m10c standard seems to be a perefct choice for low volume bedroom playing.

I just put the M10c with paper voice coil in my Princeton Reverb. Previously, I had a Jensen P10R-F (too woolly), then a Celestion Gold (changed the eq too much for vintage tone, but great pedal platform), then an alnico GA-SC59 (too warm, missing presence/shimmer). I generally like alnico speakers, and I love the GA-SC59 in my 63 Vibroverb clone, but my Princeton was missing that blackface shimmer. Sounded good, but not great. Jupiter M10c 25watt is EXACTLY what the doctor ordered. Sounds perfect with a sweet vintage eq. Complements my strat perfectly.

Mostly Weber. Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of speakers out there that I like - but as far as swapping speakers in my amps, I’ve never done better or felt more confident than with Jupiter or Weber (not being paid to say that - trust me, I wish I was 😃)

I've been looking at the newish Jupiter "midnight" speakers - painted blue instead of green, but more importantly - they are similar to one classic version of the old Chicago Jensen C12N, P12N, and C10N. The difference is they have lower sensitivity, and smoother highs. I've got a Jupiter 25 watt speaker you demonstrated here, which I found on Reverb slightly used. I like buying used speakers, they are broken-in.

I'm going to get 4 of these for a Super Reverb. Should I get 4 standards or 2x2 standard & paper? I keep listening to this demo and I can't decide.

@JackFossett Thank you for saying that! I wanted to go that route, but I was having a hard time convincing myself. I definitely prefer the standard to the paper in isolation, but your demo of the combo has a certain extra dimension to the sound.

The paper sounded thinner. If I had to choose I would take the modern. My favorite was the stereo though🙂👍🏻 Thanks for these videos!

I don't know if it's true across the board, but with Weber speakers their "150 series" (12F150,12A150,10A150,10F150) seem fatter, with smoother highs than the "125" series, which is similar to comparing Jensen Q and N sizes. I always seem to prefer vintage Chicago Jensen speakers with larger "P" or "N" sized voice coils and magnets.
