Could the course of the American Civil War have been changed if Union troops were given repeating rifles, instead of the older single shot musket? We compare the Model 1860 Spencer repeating rifle against the main infantry arm of the American Civil War, the muzzleloading M1861 Springfield rifle-musket. As the first magazine fed repeating rifle adopted by any military, the Spencer rifle had enormous potential, but just how much better was it when compared to the Springfield rifle-musket? Was the new repeating rifle’s capability worth the additional expense?
