My thoughts, not written in stone, cherish & nurture Paph roots. Never leave the potting medium to break down to any extent, repot when necessary, not when you see any problem there. Feed very dilute organic fertilizers. & take advantage of foliar feeds, again, VERY dilute. Spray the UNDERSIDE of the leaves so as to avoid water in the crowns.I use plain bark, boiled for 10 minutes, rinsed & stored in sealed plastic bags. It is then clean & well hydrated before use. A thin top dressing of chopped, ( soaked before use) sphagnum moss will be appreciated by the plant. A light spray of R.O. rain or de ionised water over the spagnum on hot, dry days is benificial in the growing season to encourage new roots. Seaweed based fertilizers often contain root stimulating substance that is an excellent booster. 40 years of growing orchids & I'm still learning all the time, thanks to people like Dani & others who give excellent, honest & practical guidance. Newbies, read, research, know the plant natural envirnment. Be wary - there is so much rubbish advice out there. Sellers are not always growers. Thank you Dani for you encouraging & ever reliable guidance.

I have not seen the American Hybrid here in Colorado- only phaps I have been able to get are the mottled leaf with a blueish tinge I purchased a discounted Phapiopedilum Fred’s Style (Fred’s Aura ‘Lightness’ x Egrel’s ‘White Flight) as my first one. It was discounted due to the bloom had dropped. So your videos have helped quite a lot in how I need to keep it from fading away 😍

I have paphiopedilums which I never have nurtured before. My medium is potting soil and lava aggregate.1:2 ratio. Left them under my 4 foot eave, but they didn't like the heat from the roofing. Took them over to my shelves which have morning shade and 4 hours of afternoon sunlight. They are doing so well. It rains a lot here so well draining medium is a must. They love their location I'm in the tropics. Humidity in the 90s and temps are at high 80s

I would love to see an update of the phalaenopsis keiki project with keiki paste. You showed us the phal which had only flower spikes in a monthly bloom video, but I never saw the one with the keiki again. I think my phal is producing a keiki and I immediately thought of your experiment. I am so excited and it would be awesome to see updates on yours😍

Something I've found is that Paphiopedilums have really different temperature ranges depending on their parentage. Some of them are cooler-intermediate growers and others are warm-growers and will not tolerate anything under 60. My Paph superbiens for example is listed online as intermediate but mine wilts and looks completely sick if its exposed to anything under 55 for too long. So I keep it with my warm growers and now its thriving. My Paph fairrieanum is super adaptable. It can handle periods of drought, cooler temperatures, higher temperatures -- basically it doesn't care. I find that their growth is even slower than my Phal's as you stated. They've also been much more susceptible to spiders mites. I used to have a Paph delenatii that died after it was exposed to temps around 55-50 degrees after being outside in my attempt to bloom it. They are the most finicky of all the orchids I have (including my zygo hybrid....).

I know this video is older but I just bought a Paph Lynleigh Koopowitz It does have an odor. It is supposed to smell like raspberry cream. I can't wait till it blooms. : )

Hi, Dani! Would you consider doing a video on timing specifically? Like how long between blooms, how long to recover an orchid, to get new growth on roots, bulbs, etc. As an anxious person I never know if it is just nature taking its time or if there is something wrong I should address.
@ericyee3176
@ericyee3176 5 жыл бұрын
I just want to chip in and say that you can't really know a lot of these timing-based things because there's too many variables. Yes, flowering is something that is pretty regular and something you can figure out after maybe 1-2 years of owning that particular plant, but things like time to recovery or new roots...well, that's kind of impossible to tell because damage/recovery is almost always case-by-case. I have Phalaenopsis that have taken days to adjust to new media and others that have taken months. I have a Tolumnia that looks like it will die at any second (and has been like this for 2 years), but a similarly troubled Tolumnia has rebounded in 6 months.

@@ericyee3176 Thanks for the input! =] Understanding that it varies and the range that things vary in is already super helpful! Thank you for the examples! It's so funny you would mention Tolumnias as that is one I am struggling with at the moment and one of the big reasons for my comment XD

Hi Dani, I live in a climate similar to yours but hotter and drier. How do you over winter your vandas? Thanks in advance! I have watched and rewatched almost all of your videos. You have helped me fuel my enjoyment by adding to my success with all types of orchids.

Thank you for this video! Those mottled leaves are so gorgeous :) I had some beginner's luck with my first paph. Now that the flower is gone, I'd like to repot it, but can't decide in what type of pot. I think the ideal would be bark in a self watering pot. What do you think? I'm usually heavy on the watering, but also leave a few weeks now and then.

Hi Danny, love the roots on your Paphs. So healthy looking. I have (had) 2 of the American paphs, (I lost one from allowing the joints between the leaves to get wet) She did bloom for me before I lost her. The second one is doing very good and she has a new fan and a new leaf. So exciting. I'm in the USA and find the American very available, especially online. (got both of mine from Nursery Sellers on Amazon for about $25.00 USD each and both were NBS. Think I am going to replace the one I lost once next Spring comes!!!

Wanda Shaw hi Wanda! Hope you don’t mind me asking if you have any blooming advice for this one? Mine is growing so well but has four fans now and one have bloomed. Thanks for any advice you can offer on that :)

Melissa Walker , I am still learning about this genre. I do have mine in a mix of peat moss and bark. She gets filtered sun almost all day. And I don’t let her dry out completely. Hope this helps.

Hi again Danni, just wondering if you are familiar with the Oeceoclades orchids? I'm being gifted one that is Odecaryana x Omaculata genus. Thanks for any information you can provide.

I notice you don’t use wicking system on most of your orchids anymore. Is there a reason? Not sure if I miss any video regarding the change or not. So just wondering !! Love your video

First. Also I have a question. My philinopsis is I believe 3-4 years old. And is in relatively good condition. But I think it’s using it’s ariel roots to absorb all the water it will use. How can I help it so tht it can use its potted roots to get its water.

Hi Dani, I have a paph, and I’m having leaf issues. They won’t stand on their own. I repoted it several months ago and my issue isn’t hydration. The floppy leaves are disrupting the new leaf growth. I decided to grow it upside down so that the leaves don’t fold closer to the base and mess up the new growth. Do you have any advice on how to deal with the floppy leaves? I think they may be too big for the orchid to support. As I mentioned, I’m certain it’s not a hydration issue.
@2202sm

It needs some cal mag. I had the same issue. Soaked the whole pot in cal mag for an hour and staked the leaf. Calcium and magnesium is very important for cell development. After about a week the leaf I had that was falling over is very strong and standing up like the others.

Something weird is happening to my paph because the new pup that is coming out of the mother plant is smaller than the mother plant and yet it,s blooming and making another pup do I need to worry about it,s condition?
