This reminds me of the poem about the "Cautious Man". 'There once was a very cautious man who never laughed or cried, he never cared, he never dared, he never dreamed or tried. And when one day he passed away, his insurance was denied. For since he never really lived, they claimed he never died.'

That's the point of this scene. Steve was in this role as a man who was convicted of a crime he never committed. So if he never tries to escape from that terrible prison while he is still young, he is basically wasting his time of his life, which is the biggest crime he ever commits.. he feels guilty. That's why this scene is closed with him, staring awake, cannot afford to sleep.
@mei64872 жыл бұрын
@@casioak1683 , very good point. Do you interpret dreams? To me, in this dream he's struggling w his conscience that's been constantly condemning him since childhood that you're just wasting your life as a thief (safes thief), while the other part of him (his ego) was satisfied w being a safes thief. In his dream his indignation of being falsely charged & sentenced for killing the pimp is overrode by his life long struggle w his conscience in order to achieve the equilibrium of his soul. Here Papillon reveals his religious side. Or maybe the filmmaker does that.

@@MrThermostatic from Jack LaLanne: Thoughts are things. Negativity is what kills you... It's tough to do, but you've got to work at living, you know? Most people work at dying, but anybody can die; the easiest thing on this earth is to die. But to live takes guts; it takes energy, vitality, it takes thought. . . . We have so many negative influences out there that are pulling us down. . . . You've got to be strong to overcome these adversities . . . that's why I never stop.

@@MrThermostatic But maybe what some consider living, is it really living? Some become Buddhist, trying to enlight their spirit. Mainly in Asia this happens. Others endulge into parties and f-ing around with many people and consider that living. There's no blue print when you are born to follow the right path. We have to figure this all out ourselves. Well, killing and hurting other people doesn't seem a good thing to do. As the Dalai Lama said, in Buddhism it is said, if you can't do good, at least leave behind the bad actions. I would say myself, everyone has their own struggles in life. Some might seem happy, but may not develop spiritually at all. Following a religion has also a danger. For many are not open anymore to thoughts outside the box (book, their religion). The Book is Holy and everything else is not the Truth. Ok, just some mumblings from me haha.

Such a powerful scene! I first saw this as a small child many years ago but I never forgot that one scene. I guess it was seared into my consciousness and later it encouraged me to do something meaningful with my life. So from being a high school drop put at 16 with no qualifications I became a volunteer working with orphans in Eastern Europe and through such work, seeing crippling poverty and injustice (that came from having no education) I later returned to the UK, get an education and now I work as a university lecturer and private tutor helping and motivating young people to take education and life seriously. Guess it goes to show how things in our childhood can affect us in later life.
