Blackballed. If there was ever a person that understands that term, it’s today’s feature. But not blackballed in the typical form. As we’ll see later, his was a lot different, and the perfect example of wrong place wrong time, right artist, wrong circumstances. It’s oxymoronic to say you’re a hip hop head, love pure hip hop at its essence, or even a fan of rap as it was created and not know who Papoose is. His career literally died on the hill of letting you know that when it came to rapping and doing simply that, his name should be mentioned with the greats. In interviews whenever he’s asked about his place against top MCs in the game, he almost feel disrespected by the comparisons and also that the goal post is always moved so to speak when record sales vs who can actually spit rhymes are the topic. In the late 90s he was destined to be the next big rapper from New York, at least it’s what he thought, and yes he was this close to that happening. He’s most famously known for his connection to DJ Kay Slay, his mixtapes classics, especially with the street sweepers and always speaking his mind about injustice of all kinds in the majority of his songs. He had the look right for the times, the pedigree being from the Mecca of hip hop and a place some of the greatest MCs of all time were also from. And he was backed by a legendary hip hop figure in Kay Slay. So why didn’t he blow up in the rap game and see the success of other artist if you asked him couldn’t compete in that area with his studied skills. PAPOOSE Was Supposed To Be New York's Next BIG Rapper! What Happened? Here are 3 reasons his Growth was Stunted!

@CosmicRyda G plenty of battle rappers who focus on being the best lyricist/wordsmith resulting in them usually being better than most top lyricist that makes music. The reason why someone lik e eminem could never step back in the nattle rap like canibus did is because the same thing would happen and ems depends on his stans to think he is unbeatable.

Papoose is definitely one of the “G.O.A.T’s” his major downfall was that he was rhyming too complex in a time where hip hop was dumbing down. He was the last of a dying breed in an era of 808’s ,snaps and simplistic lyrics with hooks that were chanted. When Nas said hip hop was dead nobody believed it but he was right, that era of rap was dead (boom bap was dead).

Even before the drill and trap rap took over Pap wouldn’t make a complete 3 verse song and that’s his own fault. Even Rakim, Nas, Black Thought and them made whole complete songs for video even before they era ended. He just freestyled and ciphered us too much without finishing his actual album

This video pretty much said it but Nas has done a great job of still implementing that old school feel and lyricism while also transitioning into the new era of uptempo beats. A complete rapper is able to rap-lyrically speaking-has charisma and makes hits. Of those traits, the only one, when isolated, that doesn’t guarantee success is rapping ability. Papoose has that in spades, but he lacks in the other departments. Jada is just as lyrical-in a different way-as Papoose, but he’s got a big personality. I think Papoose could have been great in a group where other group members complemented him.

@ W B That's exactly what happened. Papoose was being managed by DJ Kay Slay. Instead of trying to promote and market Papoose to a major record label... Kay Slay was using Paposse to sell his mixtapes. So Papoose's career went no farther then being on DJ Kay Slay's mixtapes. And by the time he did get on a label and released his 1st album. (The Nacirema Dream) The buzz for Papoose was gone.

I don't think he would had been big at any point in hip hop. In 1992 the biggest rappers were like Kriss Kross and Mc Hammer. In the mid 90s, mainstream rap was dominated by Bad Boys and Death Row. Wutang was big in the 90s, but not even close to being as big as Deth Row records were back then. Basically there was never a point and time where a straight up spitter was super mainstream. People act like Rakim was super mainstream back in the days. He had a hit or 2, but it wasn't like his music dominated airways back then.

One of papoose's downfalls was his voice. I was a huge pap fan but even then I knew his voice wouldn't appeal tp the masses. It was just too rough around the edges for the average listener. That is one of the reasons why his fanbase were mainly hardcore hip hop heads.

@@mackvelly8899 I agree that the material is sometimes brilliant. But it’s a similar story with Lloyd Banks; his mixtapes are of such high quality you would take a studio album for granted, so when it comes around to purchase time, unless you are a huge fan, you are likely to treat it with the same level of respect as a mixtape, which we all know is tantamount to bootlegging.

Papoose is definitely the evolution of the style that Big L had. Except Papoose had way better writing. I have to admit, I enjoyed a lot of his mix tapes and freestyles. But when it came to listening to an album, it didn't gell quite well. The issue with Papoose is that he's also extremely stubborn. Even if you put a team around , I doubt he'd listen. Pappoose will always make waves, because he's just too nice on the mic not to have a fan base. I think he has found his lane. Let's face it, he was never going to be a mainstream rapper. And that's ok.

Papoose has so much potential, it's unfortunate to see how things turned out for his career. But pap is a typical New York rapper who is over lyrical and can't create a song that can be played on the radio, and that people can bump while driving their car, or get hype to at the club. This is the same thing that happened to Joe Budden, super lyrical but couldn't make a real song to save his life.
