Papua New Guinea: Alotau Lik Lik Festival, Kiriwina amazing locals & Conflict Islands snorkeling.

One of our best nomad days ever!! We visited 3 Papua New Guinea cruise ports: Alotau, Kiriwina Island and one of the Conflict Islands. Best of all we met 2 young men and a tribal chief in Kiriwina and spent an amazing day learning about their life-just wish we could share it all! We did some awesome snorkeling in the paradise of the also primitive Conflict private island (not cruise company owned) and attended a Lik Lik Festival in Alatau. Lots of tips, cautions and mostly our amazing local experience and snorkeling in beautiful Papua New Guinea on our Carnival Luminosa cruise.

As birders, Papua New Guinea is a dream destination for us. We don't know many people who have gone, so this was nice to watch. What a great experience!

​@@TasteLifeWithUs Don't feel bad, everyone is bad at taking bird pictures. The little buggers have a sixth sense about cameras and are great at staying just out of focus or just behind a leaf or branch. We love looking for them but we rarely even try to get photos anymore, it is just too frustrating 😆

We also spent about 30 minutes having a great convo with Cary but something was going on with our audio so we could only rescue a couple minutes😐. We didn’t want to record with Chief Frank (seemed disrespectful) but loved our long conversation. And it was hard to record on the long walk talk with soft spoken Joe but I hope a little of the magic came through the video. What a privilege to meet these great guys!

My cousins and sister and their husbands just came back from a PNG cruise. Loved the cruise with the exception of being mugged on Rabaul in the port. Random dude turned up and asked for money , a few $’s given as that’s all they had . Next thing they know a knife is pulled on them demanding more money . They we able to talk him down by mentioning he’s in the port and if they yelled port security would depend on him , he backed off and finally put the knife away and the incident reported to the cruise line. Just be really careful- desperate times and all that.

Yes Rabaul was actually cancelled from our cruise itinerary due to civil unrest and now I’m even more glad! Scary for them! (And it gave a second day in the Conflict Islands paradise!) We, personally, didn’t wander around Alotau alone after hearing the warnings. We were glad Kiriwina and Conflicts were so different and safe.
