A few months ago, I compared my friends Para 3 (not lightweight) to my Persistence, and I was surprised by how similar the two knives were in regards to size, shape and blade thickness. I'm not really planning on purchasing a folder soon, but, if I were, I would probably purchase the Sage 5 lightweight because of the slightly thinner blade, and becsuse I prefer the scale pattern from the Taiwan made models.

Yeah tony the bugout is probably the most favorable carry, however its not always practical. Where as the chappie is very much so. Those 2 see a lot of pocket time.
@Lumpy_Peter
@Lumpy_Peter 4 жыл бұрын
@@jackfarmboy Could you please elaborate on this? In what situations is bugout not so practical, while chaparral is? Just looking for confirmation of my decision. I am a traditional slipjoint guy, but I thought I should also experience something more up to date. I was looking for slicy, pocketable, one hand opener, possibly with modern steel. I was on the fence between bugout and chaparral, but bugout did appear a wee bit too big for me (I am comfortable carrying something up to 3 3/4 inch closed). After receiving several warnings about quality inconsistencies with bugout from fellow forum members I went with chaparral. But that bug(out) remains on my mind. Chaparral is definitely not a knife to fiddle with. I find it quite amazing that you're able to flick it. And now with bugout mini in the game.....
@jackfarmboy
@jackfarmboy 4 жыл бұрын
@@Lumpy_Peter that's a great insightful question! The chaparral took quite a while to break in and lots of use. As far as one hand opening it will remain a slow roller for quite a while. Now with that aside, the slicyness of its blade is superior to the bugout. And its a thinner, shorter, more compact package ..... however..... I havent had a mini bugout yet. That does change things quite a bit. 🤔 I wish I could offer you advice here. Based on your curiosity, I feel that a mini bugout will fit the bill of what your looking for.
@jackfarmboy
@jackfarmboy 4 жыл бұрын
@@Lumpy_Peter As far as situations on practicality, I have a job where personal knives are generally a NoNo. However pulling out a bugout over the chappy would raise more eyebrows. The blade length and slicyness are wins here as well. And it carry wells.
@Lumpy_Peter
@Lumpy_Peter 4 жыл бұрын
@@jackfarmboy Thank you for the reply. I have said it before and I say it again: C'mon Spyderco make FRN Chaparral 2 with compression lock. It's got liners, so it shouldn't be that hard. I would gladly sacrifice some of its thinness and as a bonus you could drop that chunk of metal backspacer, making it super light. With it's slightly better steel and superior slicyness that would make for worthy competitor to the bugout.

I've got a couple bugouts. Wish they'd come out with a G10 model that doesn't cost an extra $100 to add scales too... I like the feel and handle thickness of the CF scales better and don't care about an extra few grams. It makes no difference in carry to me.
@Mr.Sr.Jr.
@Mr.Sr.Jr. 3 жыл бұрын
The lock stick is easily fixed by anyone whose taken apart a knife before and should not have been counted as a point against this knife, the "oh no" you mentioned is also a non-issue. 👍🏼 This was one of my first knives, I ended up gifting it to a friend and over the next year regretted it as I fumbled around carrying a few other knives until eventually buying another as my everyday work carry. It really hits a lot of great points as far as an everyday carrying knife, it's easily folded with one hand which is really nice when you are working and have your other hand occupied. The steel is great for everyday use anything nicer and I find that people are leery of actually using the knife as it was intended because they do not want to mar something they spent so much money on. By this knife if you are looking to have something that you treasure but will still use day-to-day.

My Para 3 lightweight has opened in the pocket like 2x in about 2 weeks. I gave the main pivot a hair tighter to see if that helps. Otherwise I like it overall, it does feel very plastic but you know they spent alot of time engineering those parts so I guess time will tell how they hold up.
@kpfagerberg

That’s what always freaks me out about the lightweight. My paramilitary 2 has never opened in the pocket. Seems like the full liners add some strength to the detent. Lockbacks in FRN are a good alternative for lightweight knives
@greg0063
@greg0063 Жыл бұрын
@@kpfagerberg I wound up sending it back to Spyderco. They checked it and said it was in spec but if I didn't want it they would refund it, so I asked if I could put the difference towards a G10 Para 3. They said sure and sent out a black on black. So far I have no issues with that one. I agree with you I would give a lock back a try in FRN without hesitation, the design lends itself better to the handle material.

Something I found interesting was a feature on one knife that you claimed caused your hand to slide downward, but on another knife with the EXACT SAME FEATURE, you did not mention the hand movement problem. This indicates to me a personal preference that might have been unconscious, but all the same evident with regards to an impartial comparison. One thing you failed to stress was the deep carry wire clip on the Para3 LW...which to many is the deal maker.
@jackfarmboy
@jackfarmboy 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and the feedback. I always appreciate constructive criticism. With regards to the feature... I never claimed any particular feature of the knife was causing my hand to move, I just noted the area of discomfort. Im assuming your referring to the native 5 and chappy. On the chaparral lw those same features did not cause discomfort. As far as the pocket clip, at around the 5 minute mark I speak about it being a positive feature of the knife and one I was happy with. Most videos of this nature will be laden with preferences and will struggle to balance true unbiased observations. The best remedy for that is to have multiple sources of information. I hope that clears up any confusion. Im not a self proclaimed expert , I'm a dude who talks about knives. I've stated before, my viewers know more about knives than I do 😁. Thanks again.

I wouldn't even trust that stop pin for the yellow rope I test on. To me putting a stop pin in plastic is inexcusable. Sorry Spyderco. You're going to have to change the knife's name. A real Para is built to take a beating. This thing is barely built to cut a brick of cheese. I feel like any of the other lightweight knives, the Manix 2 LW, or even the $20 KA-BAR Dozier would be tougher than the "Para" 3 LW. I k ow the Bugout is reliable because I've done unspeakable things to it. I think if I had to pick another LW knife since I sold my Bugout I would go with a Manix 2 LW or get another Delica 4. Anyway, now that I've spewed my hate and opinions, nice video man. I like the comparison bit you did in the end. I have to agree that of the knives you showed I'd take the Chapparal
