Parabola - How to find the coordinates of the vertex - Maximum & Minimum Points of a Quadratic

Learn how to find the coordinates of a parabola's vertex, that's is maximum or minimum point. The method, and formula, is shown with an example.
The idea is to start by calculating x coordinate of the vertex, using the formula x = -b/2a
Once we have the x coordinate, to find the y coordinate we plug the the x coordinate's value into the the parabola's equation and calculate y.

Absolutely! If the leading coefficient (the number multiplying the x^2) is positive then the parabola is concave-up (looks like a smile) and the vertex is a minimum. If the leading coefficient is negative then it is concave-down and the vertex is a maximum. Hope that helps 😊

That really depends on what the topic of the assignment was 😊. If it was on quadratics then it’s a typo and the power on that first x should be a 2. But if it’s an assignment on polynomials or cubic functions it is very possible that it’s written correctly.

if you derive the quadratic formula, from the standard form of the quadratic equation, the first term will be -b/2a that’s the acis of symmetry 🙂

Good question 😊 When we write a quadratic in that form: y=a(x-h)^2 + k It’s know as the “vertex form”, the axis of symmetry has equation x = h (careful h is being subtracted from x) So in the example you wrote, you have (x+1)^2 Think of that as (x-(-1))^2 The axis of symmetry would be x= -1 Hope that helps 😊
