Paradiddles along with other rudiments add so much to kit grooves and fills. I learned most of the rudiments in my teens playing snare in a drum corps. It wasn’t until I was in my 40s (longer time ago than I care to reveal) how useful they are on a kit. You are a terrific instructor. Wish you and KZbin had been around in my 20’s and 30’s when I was simply playing eighth note rock beats and swing beats on the kit. Keep up the work sharing great drumming techniques along with your brilliant sense of humor with the rest of the world.

Thank you for this awesome lesson and especially for explaining where to to put the heavy snare hit, kick drum, and ghost notes. This totally explains why my paradiddles just sound muddled and globbed together. I can't wait to go home and practice it. cheers!

She is 100% correct. A little advice, start slow playing all four strokes. (R-L-R-R, L-R-L-L). Relax and repeat for several minutes without speeding up. Get so comfortable with them and recite something that you 100% know, like your address. When you see that you can keep the sticking pattern intact without thinking about it, then you can start accelerating. A good teacher can show you how to go from 4 strokes to 3, then eventually ONE.

Ok I’m a guitarist ..shock Horror! But I had drum lessons for 2 years Firstly I recommend ANY musician to get drum lessons It gives you such an improved perspective in the placement of accents for every instrument and how simple motifs can produce incredible results at different speeds with different accents Second . Love your teaching style ,, needless to say I’m Back on my kit cursing for 3 years no practice 😂😂😂😂 Thank you

Gotta disagree. Drums is a very unusual instrument where you can develop without any instruction at all. If you just read the George Stone book and apply that everywhere you can you will find all the grooves you need. It’s very time consuming but that’s drums.

Finally a female drummer shows how to teach music effectively, with a style utterly bereft of irrelevant piffle and trifling minutiae - She delivers the nitty gritty of drum kit playing in a clipped, humorous fashion which really does make percussion education a whole lot of fun...

Careful now, all you new folks - if you start infusing your playing with paradiddles, you might end up addicted. You could spend the next thirty-odd years playing stuff that sounds kind of paradiddly whenever you sit down to play. I mean...er...maybe. So they tell me. Not that I, er, no, not me...
