I remember my great grandfather telling me a story about a great fire that swept through 4 small towns and a hamlet up in the Adirondacks way back around the turn of the century. Pretty close to 1920. Anyway, he seen this footage and he got teary eyed. I asked him...papa , what's wrong ? I know this is heart wrenching but...then I remembered the story he told me. Back then there wasn't any cars to be blistered and rims to be melted. But he told me how he barely escaped with his life. One minute everything seemed fine. Then a slight breeze and smoke. Then literal all hell broke loose all around him. Gusts of wind so strong it blew carriages sideways and uprooted trees. Horses broke free from their tie downs and ran for their lives. The wind was so strong it was blowing embers the size of anvils he said and they would smash into anything they hit like a bomb. The fire had a mind of its own and skipped the barber shop and blew the flames out toward the lake and burned out 3 boats docked out 30 feet off shore. There was tornados of fire and wind gusting over 70 mph he said. IT WAS HELL ON EARTH HE CLAIMED. But this footage reminds him of how his town looked. Papa turns 112 January 16th. I hope he doesn't have to witness this again.

Hey David Little, photographer & columnists. Good column on the old covered bridge, So sad. It was an art subject in one of our art class at CSH in ‘58 or ‘59. We use to go to Paradise for their great apples and cider. We went the back way over the covered bridge to the apple orchards. Mom like to take photographs of the scenery along the way, sometimes they were used in the ER. She was the Society (Women’s) Page Editor. Chico was so hot in the summer and going up to the mountains and forest to Paradise was a nice relief from the heat. Back when I worked for Pete Peterson, circulation manager for the ER, you know, as a paper boy.

@@markmnorcal Yet, weather forecast showed high Nina winds in the State of California driving fires elsewhere. Should have been more damage in this highly wooded area. Winds were recorded by a guy on youtube who tracks weather and he tracked winds as high as 60 mph in this area using google maps. Some residences this guy is driving by are surrounded by trees, house is gone yet trees are still standing. Makes no sense.

Emerald Gem One, I've been trying to understand this, too. Mostly, I've been a frequent visitor to California. My grandmother was born there. My cousins and 1 brother and briefly, a sister lived there. I have mostly lived on the opposite coast where fire is nothing like it is out there. So, in the East, I was allowed to build fires both in the fireplace and outdoors in a clearing--from the time I was little. Fire-building is something I know. Let's say you are trying to build a fire with freshly cut, green wood. You've got some kindling and you have a 60 mph fan blowing where you are trying to start the fire and to complicate things, the fresh logs are unsplit and upright. Okay? Ever try to light a match in the wind? As for the strangely apparent selective burning. Fires make their own weather. Who knew that fire tornados existed until cameras became so ubiquitous? Tornados will hit one house and leave another or take out whole blocks and leave one structure. Or flip a dozen cars and leave 1 touched. Isn't this why so many people believe in miracles, b/c we don't have all the answers? My analogy of the 60 mph fan would suggest that there was never any change in natural wind direction, the whirlwinds they cause and other details. I think the person who pointed out that roofs are flat surfaces, more embers, more chances to catch. I think alot of house fires also catch from sparks that are driven by wind under the eaves. I am as suspicious as the next person, but I'm not for quixotic fights with ...idk? Harder to fix idk even a little.

Also, thank you so much for making the vid. My great grandparents lived there, too, but I never knew them. This is truly heart-breaking. Your jacket looks spot-on. @@EmeraldGemOne Don't be ridiculous - trees are mostly water, houses are made of wood that has been drying for many, many years. And the pattern of the frame makes it that much easier to burn. A house is basically a bonfire waiting to be lit.

i've been working at several mobile home parks in Paradise for years and I'm sure they're gone... we operate their gas systems... have yet to hear from the owners or managers. just a horrific tragedy for such a calm cool town. PG&E owes Paradise and their residents' everything.

There's no odd gray misty fog. It was smoke. It smelled like smoke. Many trees did burn. The fire moved through so fast that many did not.

Hello I'm a retired firefighter. Just a few observation. What caused the power lines to fail?? looks like the poles are fine. Also the moter homes, highly combustable, yet the building next door was burned to the ground . Now that's God's grace or something someone should look into because the trees don't look scorch either!!! Just my opinion and ALLOT of fires.

Apparently Deb, not enough fires. I worked for CalFire and there's nothing unusual about this fire other than the time of year and the extended drought...actually even the drought isn't all that unusual. As to the trees, it was a fast running ground fire that didn't crown which would leave a lot of the trees alive and healthy - at least in the videos I've seen and besides, there were plenty of trees that burned like a roman candle.

Thank you so much for posting this. The news just wants to show destruction and never the buildings that are left standing. Both are equally important. I had belongings in American Self Storage (Paradise Mini Storage at Skyway and Clark Rd.). I have no idea if it is still there or not. I used to live on the upper portion of Coutolenc. The fire map fro Cal Fire shows that the fire stopped a 1/4 mile before Tan Oak. I am not sure if that is up to date or not. I am hoping for the safety of everyone who still lives there. That is far more important than my belongings.

You can see where all the heat was on most of those trees, the lower part is burned, the rest of the trees are fine.

@@madmax2069 Yup. Not in all cases, some closely packed smaller trees seemed to burn to death and some of the large ones too. If all the large trees had been destroyed it would be far more difficult to justify rebuilding since that's really the entire reason for the beauty and desirability of such locations. It's going to take yr.s to rebuild but it would take half a century to regrow the large trees.

Please stop the conspiracy theories. This is a simple situation. Think about how you normally start a campfire. You create an ember and then blow on it while exposing it to small sticks and other flammable materials. This is the exact same situation, only on a massive scale due to the high speed winds coming down the canyons. The ground litter and underbrush is all gone, that is what burned when the high winds pushed the fires thru this area. That ground litter created the flying embers, which ignited anything they landed on that was flammable. Cars, houses and yards were most affected. Large pine trees with their needles and bark is resistant to ember fires. Spots sheltered from the wind were also spared. No lasers from space or black suburbans involved. Save the tinfoil hat theories for Roswell.

Trees are 70% water and once the outer layer gets charred they can't burn anymore. Many of the lawns were fine because they were irrigated with sprinklers during the night and were full of water. Meanwhile, most homes and small buildings are built with small sticks of lumber that are dried out for over a year so they are straight to build with and won't cause mold. Modern houses are full of carpets and textiles that are made from oil-based plastics and synthetic fibers, cardboard boxes, clothing, bedding, cheap particle-board furniture, exteriors covered with oil-based vinyl siding or thin wood siding.

I still can't tell if the Paradise Lutheran Church is still standing, but the community building is. Does anyone know? This is such a tragedy that it happened to all these working class people. Everything they have is gone.

CT500, I saw 1 large tree on the right cleanly, freshly bisected shortly after that a line of burned cars with flat tires in the right lane of 2 lane road. Briefly, this man had to drive in the left lane to avoid the cars. About 3/4 thru.

Ct5006360, I entered the fire zone of the Valley Fire 2015, 19hrs after the fire started. I drove over many powerlines and utilities lines. Some lines were low hanging . There were also utility poles in the roadway and suspended above the roadway. Downed trees partially blocking the roadway. Eventually I came to a utility pole across the roadway, blocking my path....I had to find another way around it. If there’s nothing in the roadway, it’s a sure bet that anything that was there was moved out of the way to make access.

It was mostly a grass fire but there was massive damage to groves that weren't shown directly relative to Paradise. We aren't under attack. It was a wildfire, no conspiracy involved.

WAKE UP! Too many things wrong. The roads are too clean,for strong wind driven fires, no melted or half burned plastic trash cans,that are right next to burned cars. What’s with the fire trucks with nobody around them? I have never seen an unattended dispatched fire truck in my life. Work trucks, and 15 passenger vans,but very few people visible or really doing any kind of work. Trees with small branches and leaves very close to completely destroyed structures. Ask yourself why power poles and lines are down all over,and no trees block most of the roads,or pushed out of the way to clear the road?things seen in this video and others just don’t seem logical and are not right with this event. Thank you for getting this footage out.
