The South Florida housing crisis has residents living on the edge. The prices of homes, apartments, insurance, and condo assessments keep going up and there doesn’t seem to be any end in sight. They look like tired travelers waiting for a flight. But take a closer look. These people are actually homeless and they are living inside Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

This is a prime example of how not all homeless people are drunks and addicts and walking around the streets strung out and filthy. People tend to have that image when it comes to the homeless and it’s not always the case. People looses their job and housing and are forced in the realm of homelessness. I eventually had to sell the RV months later but what i did instead was let him stay inside my house.... Until we were able to get him home assistance...sometimes people just need a little help guys. My friend (became a friend) happened to be a responsible person that just needed a bit of help. The majority of people have unending compassion for others… But many are also NOT going to be angry or even upset over the situation they now find themselves in… Leaving a State to move to another State, ESPECIALLY with a ‘Special Needs’ Child and not only that, but leaving with only $15,000 is just Stupid and extremely irresponsible. I get the fresh start, as I too became a Widow with 2 young children at the time, and too wanted a “fresh start” but I ALSO knew that my finances would NOT allow me to move, find a job, housing, etc with little to no money! And the unnecessary expense of renting a Storage Unit is very irresponsible. Also the “Guaranteed” job is also irresponsible… cause NOTHING in Life, especially a Job is Irresponsible. And I also want to point out that if the Ashes were important.. THAT is what she should have with her, not a Cat! And I LOVE ❤️ cats. And also feel more sorry for an Animal that is put into situations by VERY poor choices of their Owners!! Bottom Line: Everyone DIES You CANT have a “Fresh Start” WITHOUT doing every possible scenario AND enough money to sustain you for a number of months for necessary items: car, rent, food, electricity, etc. And not many places in Florida have a good Public Transportation … the majority of the State is not set up “Urban” individuals… it is more of a Retirement, Family and Young People. But saying all that, its doesnt mean an average, single, non educated, average income person cant live there, they can… But they ALSO need to research where they are moving and how they can live there without too much struggle.

I was homeless in Florida for about 2 years after having lived in the state 40 years. The resources and support are woefully inadequate. I was kicked out of 4 clinical programs. Three were baker acts, 2 of whom kicked me out in just 24 hours. One was a safe house for human trafficking victims. Fortunately, I was able to move (thank God for stimulus money) to another state and was in permanent supportive housing within 4 months. Two years later I'm still in the program. This state does not leave mental health patients on the street. It is not safe to rent a room, date, or use somebody elses bathroom besides your own lest you be filmed in vulnerable positions and posted to 3rd party websites for money. Sex trafficking destroys lives. Homelessness destroys lives. It doesn't matter how beautiful, intelligent, kind, well educated you are. It can happen to anybody.

This is so sad. I am so sorry that this is happening to you. You and your cat deserve better. I hope that you can get assistance with housing so that you can lead a much happier and safer life. What a beautiful guardian angel staying so loyal by your side. I am surprised but so happy that the airport allows for homeless people to stay there with their pets. God bless you, I hope that your circumstances change for the better very soon. Stay strong. 🙏

The thing with housing assistance that people don’t really understand is that the waitlist is 5 to 10 years long. And some cities aren’t even taking names on the waitlist anymore. Los Angeles for example, they stopped taking names on the waitlist at least 10 years ago. Every once in a while they will open up a lottery to get your name on the list but then you still have a 5 to 10 year wait for housing assistance. You can google Chicago public housing waitlist and you will see that a lot of those properties have a 30 year waitlist. 30 years you will wait to get into a apartment in one of those buildings in Chicago

If she had gone to the storage auction, the people that won the unit would have most likely been more than happy to have given the ashes back. I can pretty much guarantee they would not want that kind of karma of throwing something like that away. Some good people would even try to track down the family members to return the ashes. My BF did a remodel of an old house for a friend of his and in there we found a baby book from a man that was born in the 50s. I managed to track him down on Facebook and mailed the book to the other side of the US. I hung onto that book for probably a year until I was finally able to message him on a listing he had posted on marketplace. If it hasn’t been too long, she should contact the storage company and see if she can track down the person that purchased the unit to get the ashes back.

I am praying for Rebecca. 🙏 I was recently homeless for over two years. I’m a 61 year old woman with heart problems. My faith was all I had too. God promises to lift us out of our affliction. Hang in there Rebecca. God has you in his hands. And that is the best place you could be. Trust, believe, have faith. Call into being those things that don’t exist as if they are already here. It’s really sick how ignorant & hateful masses like you blame undocumented immigrants fleeing the war zones, poverty & violence that our foreign policies have created in their countries rather than focusing on the billionaires in the top 1%-2% who are parasite leeches with fleets of private jets, hoarding & monopolizing the majority of the wealth, amassing tens, even hundreds of billions of dollars, more money than can be spent in a dozen lifetimes rather than paying their fair share in taxes, or even just paying livable wages & decent benefits, let alone doing anything charitable that’s actually concrete help. For example, like spending their money on building homeless shelters, or better yet, tiny home villages for the homeless and low income/low rent housing. But instead, they just create basically worthless “charitable” foundations as tax shelters, and a publicity front, without ever solving any of the problems that they are the ones largely responsible for!

When my husband suffered a severe brain injury I met homeless people living in the Raleigh NC hospital. They pretended to be visiting family members. Sometimes they befriended another patient and slept in their rooms. It was eye opening. Shame on this woman's church for not helping her. This is not fair to her cat. I lived in my car for 3 days when my husband suffered a severe injury and was hospitalized far from family. I can't imagine trying to feed and toilet my cat in an airport.

The reason they go to Florida is because being homeless is a lot easier in a warmer state you cannot be homeless outside in the winter in Colorado. She knew damn well why she went to Florida she was probably homeless before she went to Florida most homeless people go to California or Florida, because there are mild winters

This is my future dealing with PTSD that makes me sick for so long. I look around my bedroom now at all my clothes and belongings wondering what I will be able to take on my back when the time comes. I get so sick, tho, I imagine myself just laying down and wasting away. I watch this stuff to learn how to get by when the time comes. I could just let go.

How old is her son? He "looks" like a healthy young man. Is he able to work? If not, perhaps she could get State Aid for him if she doesn't already. That's a pretty big young man to keep fed 😅, never mind clothes, medical. ~ Wish them both well ~

Let’s hope she finds her way to find and achieve her worth. 🙏

It was a speculation that was the reason. May just aswell been because of a complaint, which is more likely. Maybe she smelled bad. Who knows. But there was no reason to conclude it was because of homelessness.

@@kayeandrews7499 Umm, why though? Being homeless alone is not reason in itself to get fired, rather the consequences of being homeless, bad hygiene etc would be more likely. I've been homeless, certainly didn't loose my job over it. But probably would have if I showed up dirty unshaved and smelled. Often homelessness is a consequence of alcohol and drug abuse though, so with that burden, yes, it's probably easy to get fired, as those things are pretty noticable.

In other, more sane countries that have won the fight against homelessness, what always works is *house people* first. To expect people to "get themselves together" in order to get out of a tent is ignorance. Once people have a roof over their heads they're in a position to get themselves together. We keep doing it backwards and can't understand why it doesn't work. We are leaving our most vulnerable to die in the streets, in the midst of wealth and privilege...
