Something to add - of you ever lose your brake handle - say in turbulence or whatever. Don't look or peck for it - instead: immediately go for your riser and run your hand up until you find it.

Thanks for the informative lesson, well done. Just curious if you have ever thrown your reserve “in extremis”and if so did you have time to use your “one hand on the brakes” method? Twice I’ve thrown in extremis and I have no idea where the brakes were, just focused on the reserve handle and proper deployment.

I flew with my hands through the toggles for ten years. It's a hard habit to break. I fly with a half wrap now. There's been numerous fatalities getting the hands stuck in a riser twist and not being able to get to the reserve. Two days ago there was a fatality at my local site. He lost consciousness and spiraled in. I'm speculating but if he lost consciousness and the hand didnt come out of the toggle there's a very good chance the deep spiral is going to continue.

Nice tips, I found all of them can be replacedysimply by using the awesome brake toggles from Sky Paragliders, they have a small hidden acro bar, no need for half wraps, holding the lines etc. Cheers

Hello Greg, I am wondering something that Bruce Goldsmith wrote as a reply to my question about brake handling specifically on my wing that is a Wasp. His answer was very firm and contrary to what I learned a long time ago. I quote: "No Contact. Pilots used to be taught to fly with the brakes in the contact position. Get more Performance As the performance of wings improves the polar curve changes. It shifts to higher speeds and the min sink and best glide both occur at higher speeds. Firstly we only saw this change on competition gliders but now we see it though the whole range of wings. The min sink used to be around 32km/h and has now shifted up to trim speed at 39kmh. Best glide was at trim speed and is now with 1/3 speed bar. This means that to achieve the best sink rate you should fly with the minimum amount of brake. Paragliders just don't fly the same any more. Pilots have been flying with brake on for years. Instructors have been teaching their students to fly ‘with contact’ with the gliders. These lessons need to be unlearnt." He positively says that we don t have to fly "in contact" with the wing. If you can comment on this, I ll be glad to hear a second oopinion, although is quite difficult to disagree with the designer of your own wing.

I also put my hands through, habits habits ! However I don't feel like I have difficulties getting my hand out.... unless I wear very thick glothes (which makes my hands bigger) That made me think that maybe it is a question of "size of hand" vs "size of handle". I have pretty thin hands and maybe that s why I find it easy to get them out. Maybe people with thicker hands do experience thoses issues and better fly with half wrap. What do you think ? However maybe I should train half wrap (but I think I would need to lengthen my brakes a bit for that)

@@greghamerton4422 I'm very annoyed at manufacturers who dont give us the loop. I had to add one on my Swift 5, and I really really dont like having to modify my glider to get what should be a basic feature on a high B.

Tell me, honestly, who has ever had the brakes snatched out of his hands, and got in trouble because of it? It's not like skipoles that you'd lose! I never put my hands through the loops. It's not because there's a hole, that you need to put something in it. I need my hands on the navigation instrument or for radio contact sometimes. I pinch the line between index and thumb just above the brake handle swivel, and hold the rest of the handle in the palm of my hand. Perfect contact with the wing. I just don't see any reason to put my hands through the loops. Even if they would get snatched, you and i know exactly where they'll be: 15 cm higher, just below the pulleys.
