2019 MERCEDES E400D DRIVING POV/REVIEW // THE E-CLASS YOU SHOULD BUY?

I intend to buy the estate version of this car. The first thing Ito do is to take the E400D and 4MATIC badges off making it look like a humble out of fashion E class estate and then enjoy to the fullest what this machine can subtly do for me: Performance, boot space, effortless cruising (1000 miles trip to Cassis in a day with a single stop for fuel and baguettes), MPG ... everything better than any ghastly SUV. By the way I detest BMWs and their drivers. I equally dislike hybrid and electric cars but not the drivers (sorry the vehicle operators).

You're not the only one who things the E400d somehow steps it up compared to the four cylinder diesels. I drove the estate versions and while the E220d feels like a luxury family car the E400d feels like a disguised S-class.

That's an amazing car I tested. It was on my acquisition list few years back, but ended up with a BMW 530d G31 LCI I sometimes enjoy at top speed in Germany.

I have the E400d All-Terrain estate which is a monster and such a great alternative to a rolly SUV. Airmatic suspension with height control. Same interior which is fab. Eats the miles and that torque hauls my race car as if it wasn’t there. My only criticism is the understeer - especially in Comfort mode.

Would that be a simple remap/chiptuning? And how does the drovetrain hold up with the 400?

@@r.o7897 ECU remaps are safe for nearly all cars longevity wise, manufacturers always leave a bit out so better models can look better to customers

I’ve had an e400d since March; upgraded from an e220d. The engine is notably smoother and quieter. Economy is pretty decent getting into the 40s without effort (struggled to get into 50s with the 2.0). It does have a disappointingly inert handling setup although if you run in sport plus it can get a little out of shape if provoked. It is fast in gear but not so much off the line. I do wonder whether they mapped it that was so that it does not outshine things like the E53.

Distronic was available in the E-class since 2003, it is beyond me why they didnt include it. Yes, the 6 cylinder does have a effortless, laid back feel. The 4 cylinder is eager to drop a gear or two once you apply some throttle, so there is immediate lag, the driver notices a gearshift and on top of it all the 4 cylinder rattle reminds you that its a 220d. None of that in the 6 cylinder, it simply accelerates without any fuss. With that said the 4 cylinders have improved significantly in terms of noise and harshness compared to even the previous gen OM651 units. Good vid, cheers.

I had the same feeling when I once drove a 530e versus my BMW 540d. a lot more comfortable and also of high quality, even though it is the same car.

It was a toss up between this and a 330d but on average the merc is quite a lot cheaper. Plus I think the interior of the merc is just a nicer place to be.

Great review. How does it compare to 530d xdrive ( we can't get 540d in uk), does it feel much faster ? Comfort and refinement? love the channel :)

The real quality starts at the E-class. A simple item such as the gear selector feels machined instead of the extruded nasty plastic item you get on the A - C class.

40D is better and more reliable than E400D. But both are the best in competition.

The E400d has a design fault where the plastic turbo vacuum line runs too close to the DPF and melts. Mercedes factory fix only developed in October 2024

Will doing the 20 mile motorway run in sports mode not make the MPG less as well I’m sure it was still in sports mode and not comfort or eco?

it was in Eco, the display can just be changed from 3 different designs. You have a sports look (this one), normal and progressive.

I think the issue is with the 400d, spec for spec compared with a 220d, it's quite expensive! I can pick up a used 220d for ~£20k mark as at current prices, but a 400d is a good £5-8k more. It's lovely that engine, but if you've got a budget on the used market it's unlikely you're going to spend the same money as a used Golf to get a better engine.

6 cylinder diesels are the engines to buy , if only they didn't have DPFs etc... only catalitic converters
