ive got this exact car, and honestly 4th gear on the motorway in sport/sport+ (i know it doesnt effect performance just throttle response) but it keeps up with c200/320is etc have to rev it out and push it but its not bad on the motorway can do 110/120 fairly easily(private road) lol

Just got my hands on a 2019 F21 118i M Shadow Shadow Edition 3 cyl after running into some issues with my 2011 E87 120d M Sport Shadow Edition. Can definitely notice the difference in power but love how well the F21 drives. Decided I don't need rapid 0-60/30-70 times anymore (less appealing now I'm 34) so am more than happy with my purchase. Also the Harmon Kardon system is niiicceee and punchy, especially when playing Afrobeats and Amapiano

@@harrycharles2676hi mate, had it just under a year now and still running perfectly like the day I bought it. Had its full service & mot a few weeks ago and had zero advisories, warnings or errors. Have done just over 14k miles as I’m also a mobile dj outside of my day job and it fits all of my equipment without feeling squished and is comfortable on long drives especially with cruise control

Great review. Had one of these as a courtesy car and agree with pretty much everything you mentioned. A lot of people automatically shit on the 118i because it’s a 3 cylinder despite never driving one. In reality the engine is pretty smooth and has more than enough power for everyday driving. The chassis is great too, as mentioned in this video, making for a surprisingly fun car. If you’re not bothered about having a stupidly powerful car then this is a solid option. The cabin is lovely place to be in and the chassis provides good fun as shown in this video. If you want power though then 2012-2014 M135i’s can be had for similar money.

I own a 116d Shadow Edition and that car is even cheaper to insure, it solves the low-end punch issue with the 118i. However it's has no power when full throtted.

Love it. As always a wonderful review! An earlier version, from 2011 to 2015, the latter even available in the facelift model, with the 1598cc engine would even be more fun with a stage 1 map up to a decent 220hp - the same engine in the 114i up to the 120i, so less in buying price (and road taxes here) when choosing a 114i for example and map it with no real internal changes required. Just the engine mapped to its natural power.

Beware these N13 4-cylinder engines used in the earlier F20s (designed in collaboration with Peugeot), suffer from degraded valve stem oil seal gaskets (resulting in more and more oil consumption) and timing chain problems (in which case a costly engine overhaul is required). I'd rather go for the B38 engine. And in any case: make 100% sure it's not currently, nor ever was in it's history, chip tuned - at least if you expect it to work reliably.

@@NowsNu Thanks, I'm glad you liked my channel - it's a 1976 Mark I, mildly restored some years ago. I'm driving the F20 B38 myself - more then enough power for today's world, the fun is more in the F20's incredibly good handling anyway. Best weight distribution is with this small engine: it's placed right behind the cabin. With super98, I manage to keep fuel consumption below 38 mpg.

The 120i has the b48 engine which can be tuned up to 270-280ps with no internal changes. Makes a big difference from 184ps!

Just catching up on this video - was it on run flat tyres ? I love basement models (I own a 318d) and this could be the car for me next I think. Does it feel lighter at the front than the diesel? Assuming it does

I’ve got one currently and love it. Only thing I hate is the clutch. Especially with its cdv it makes any confident driver feel like they have no clutch control whatsoever. Even with a brand new clutch and flywheel I feel as though the car wants to stall and the clutch is off and on to whether it wants to engage and disengage

Great video! You make some of the best reviews on youtube. I have a question: I’m getting my first car in a year, would you recommend an F20 118i/d (lci) or a Fiesta ST mk7? Or something else for spirited driving? I’m much into cars but haven’t driven anything really because only 16 yet! Here in Sweden these two are priced at aprox the same. I think the f20 M-sport looks really good but is the ST more fun? Thanks!

The ST is a great car and more fun than a 118i but the 1 series is a nicer daily. If you live around some good roads i’d get the fiesta.

Great video. I’m 18 and am considering this car when my R plates are down and if I get the right price with insurance. My current first car is only 67hp so this will feel like a step up. Preferably 2017/18 nicely specced. Found this video very relatable and think it’s a brilliant looking car and performs good for a 1.5. The new 1 series just isn’t the same and the A class and A3 just don’t do it for me like this does.

Is the series 1 a gas guzzler, looking at getting one but as soon as me uncle heard that I want a BMW he said stay away from them as their gas guzzlers, (I didn’t say what BMW model, but I know me cousin had an X5 and that was a gas guzzler)

All 1 series models are good on fuel. Even the M140i can do over 40mpg. Just depends how you drive them.

Might be late, but my 50 year old mum had one of these and only got 37mpg. Quite low for a 3 cylinder engine in a fairly small car. But not deal-breakingly bad

118i 3 points and 0 NCD 22 yr old/ £2.6k without the black box, roughly 215-250 a month Fully Comprehensive Could get that easily down if you're willing, through Third Party Fire & theft down to £150-£180 a month

eco pro mainly just changes throttle mapping but if you put your foot down you’ll get exactly the same amount of power.

118i has B38 3 cylinder engine. 120i and 125i B48 4 cylinder engine. I would go for the 120i or 125i automatic.

@@static2101 Iknow that the 118i has “only” 3 cylinders thats why i didn’t mention it. I was more curious about the difference between the 120i and 125i. Apparantly the 125i has stronger pistions and different turbo pressure.

The 118d is also a fantastic car. If you’re doing a lot of miles it’ll just about be the better choice over the 118i. The 118d has a lot more low down torque as well.

I got it as my first car in March. Not that exact one but the 5 door 116d in blue. It’s great I pay £278 a month on finance. For my usage which is commuting and pleasure I use £25 fuel per week. On eco mode £20 will do. For insurance it’s £250 per month but I suppose that’s a lot because I’m a first time driver.
